Editorial reviews
"The Headless Archer, by Tom Berry, is an enjoyable adventure packed with great characters, funny lines, and magic. It has a great pace and flow, and the reader is quickly drawn into the story. I enjoyed how the author used dual stories - the lost children and their teachers trying to find their way through the cave and Lily, Oliver and Colin who must try to rescue them. All the while, the threat of the Headless Archer looms over them. In addition, I absolutely loved Mistletoe, the dog who can speak once in the magical land. He is hilarious with all his mixed-up and backwards idioms. The banter between the two teachers, Miss Wilson and Mr. Montero, was equally funny. I heartily recommend this book for summer reading adventures. I would have devoured this as a kid and crossed my fingers for another book in the series!"

There are characters who are not what they seem on the outside. In other words, this book is THRILLING, CLEVER, MYSTERIOUS, and totally 5 STAR."

"Great twist at the end; never even suspected that. I honestly thought that the characters in chapter one were going to be the main characters for the rest of the story! Great adventure story, would recommend it to people who like Artemis Fowl and Percy Jackson. I found this book extremely enjoyable."

About the author

Thomas Berry is an author, father, fitness guru, and jam-maker extraordinaire. He also makes excellent pies. He has an extremely silly sense of humour, a colourful imagination, and a curious mind.
Between 2011 and 2020, Thomas lived in New Zealand where he ran a successful fitness business. As a personal trainer and boot camp instructor, he became extremely proficient at counting to 20 and telling people that ‘sweat is just fat crying’.
Thomas studied Ancient and Medieval History at University and has continued to read history books since. He particularly enjoys historical accounts of adventures and exploration, and also mythology and folklore. If you read The Headless Archer, you’ll see how this has influenced his storytelling.
In 2020, Thomas returned to the UK (where he was born and raised) with his family, only weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic began. He quickly needed to become a stay-at-home dad to his two boys. Early in the morning and late at night, he started to write, hoping to achieve a lifetime goal of publishing a captivating children’s book.
The result is The Headless Archer, a book in which you will discover a fantastic world of myth and legend.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book is very funny, but it also has an engaging story, which keeps the reader wondering how the children and their teachers are going to escape the strange and dark world of Lelandis that they’ve literally fallen into. Not all of the book is set in Lelandis: much of the story takes place in a pleasant English village, where another group of children plan their rescue of the Lelandis party. The book has some appealing characters, and it includes sprinklings of history and life-lessons, which, along with the humour (aimed at both adults and younger readers), add to its richness. The Headless Archer is very well written, and so it’s a pleasure to read. The story resolves nicely, but then there’s an unexpected twist, which had me looking forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! This is going to become a classic!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm so glad that I was recommended this book by a friend! My kids (aged 9 and 11) thought it was exciting, original, hilarious and inspiring.
It's great to come across an independent author who has written a book that not only matches the quality of high street best-sellers, but actually exceeds them! Too many children's authors, who are signed up to major publishers, write books that recycle themes that have proved successful elsewhere (like children chosen to attend magical schools, or good vs evil with no shades of grey). The Headless Archer is very different; it feels refreshingly original. Don't expect silly fonts and cartoons on every other page, as seems to have become the norm with children's books - The Headless Archer is presented as an old-fashioned book. The fun is in the content!
The author does a fantastic job of weaving a fantasy world into the fabric of Earth. Lily, Oliver and Colin have a fast-paced adventure that unravels like a Dan Brown novel mixed with an Indiana Jones film. There are some hilarious moments (the humour is very British - think Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling) but also moments of subtle, profound insight into human nature.
My children particularly liked the food fight, but also the tension built up before the attempted rescue of the lost school group. They also think that Titus is the ultimate companion for a fantasy adventure! Why can't more friends be Roman Legionaries? As for Miss Wilson and Mr Montero (or is this his real name?), they are such a great duo.
The book is really nicely set up for a sequel, and fingers crossed this independent author does give up the day job to write more books in the series!

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA classic with something for all ages. It combines the charm of series such as The Famous Five, The Secret Seven and Jennings and Derbyshire with the historical adventures of Rosemary Sutcliffe and the fantasy of Tolkien and Pratchett.
