About the authors
D E McCluskey was born in 1973, in Liverpool, England. He is the author of novels, graphic novels and comics. He lives with his daughter (an author in her own right (at the age of 8) with her children's adventure The Hangry Hamster), his partner, her daughter, and a sausage dog called Ted.
He began writing in 2011, creating his first comic publication entitled Interesting Tymes, an anthology of short horror stories written in rhyme for children and adults. This was quickly followed by the second in the series, along with a spin off. Dave then moved on to more adult related fiction, releasing a number of one-shot comics, followed by his first, full length book, the graphic novel, Doppelgänger.
More graphic novels and comics ensued, including a collaboration with artist Joe Matthews to produce a retelling of the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, only this time rewritten completely in rhyme.
Dave then turned his sights onto writing novels. His debut novel The Twelve was released in 2017 to great reviews. This was followed by a collaboration with a local, Liverpool music historian, to produce a historical thriller called In The Mood… For Murder, based in Liverpool in 1946.
Dave likes to work mostly in dark, or mainstream horror, although he has cross genres into extreme horror, comedy, thrillers, romantic drama, and children's books.
He is also working with a number of other authors/comic creators, in collaborations in their works.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis man is becoming one of my new favorite authors. How the heck did he even come up with the story?! 🤣🤣 It's so out of left field. I don't know, but it makes me frickin happy. If you're into disgusting body horror and storylines that seem to have come out of nowhere, you'll love this! Not only does it have gross disgusting elements, but it has psychological brain torture elements too. This is like a mix of John Carpenter's "The thing" an HP Lovecraft "The Reanimator". I'm going to get one of his other books next
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLet me just say i was wasting while i eat this and holy joy,
note i did not finish it. Take it from Mick and Finn, be good to the people who wait in you, your life could very seem be in their hands.
Vile, Disgusting, Gag Worthy read
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2023Format: Kindleas an American I'm not too familiar with the vendor Kabob- but I have had my fair share of Gyros - and after this book - I genuinely don't know if I want one immediately or never again.
Before this, the only McCluskey book I read was Zola, so although I dodn't know what to expect, I assumed something grotesque and I was not disappointed. This book reads a lot like one of the pulpy shorts found in Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt. With some rather spectacularly gross (and greasy) body horror, its hard not to feel a small twinge of sympathy for certain characters; especially if you've ever had food poisoning.
There is some magnificently cringe worthy, horrid sex scenes but nothing that really seems out of place. Maybe some author has some fascination with certain cheeses from an unhygienic male (the world may never know), but beyond that, Everything is disturbingly motivated, and you can mostly feel every deranged line.
As one with a normally pretty positive outlook on life - I'm often saddened when someone terminally ill opts to pull the plug. I've always (knock on wood) been blessed to be pretty healthy, so when someone says it has all gotten to be too much - I often cannot fathom what they are going through.
After reading this - I certainly have a much better idea of how an illness could make life unbearable. This book is an exploration into the idea of what could be worse than death, and I think it may have found it.
Queasy people be warned: If this were made into a movie, Lucifer Valentine would be chomping at the bit to given the chance to direct - aka if a bit of "calling dinosaurs"/expelling demons/ vomit does you in, you might want to steer clear.
This book packs enough punch that horror hounds should be happy, enough gore to make ones stomach churn, and still enough character and story to keep you engaged and turning the page even after you are convinced all hope is lost.
I'd say this is a solid 4.8/5 for me. Something I would recommend gladly to others - if only so they don't know if they'll ever be hungry again.
Remember to tip your waiters and be kind to the staff.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2023Format: Audible AudiobookThis book definitely hit harder as an audiobook. It's so different reading gross as opposed to hearing gross. (I kept mugging my poor Bluetooth speaker as if it were an offending object.) The synopsis for this is fairly brief so I really had no idea what I was in for. I found out. I found out quickly.
You get about 10 minutes before the ew starts and then it's just ew for the rest of the book. I have a pretty strong stomach but there were quite a few parts that had me feeling as if I'd turned green. He definitely brought the gross for this book. Also a social reminder not to be a douche to people who make your food.
I sometimes have difficulty with accented narrators (I'm American) but I didn't have any problems understanding this one. He did quite a fine job.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2023Format: KindleMcCluskey has a very wild imagination and very descriptive when it comes to horror and grossness.
I do not recommend eating any type of food while reading his books.
This story was rather unique, never read anything like it.
I was blown away by the last few chapters.
Bottom line, never treat food service workers like crap, it will come back on you tenfold…lol
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought I was armored against filth after the trauma that was Zola, but I was so wrong. This book looked at the words depraved, disgusting, heinous, and vile and said hold my beer. The writing is fantastic, which is the problem. McCluskey writes this filth so well that you can't help but keep reading to see what happens to the victims of his mind he calls characters like rubberneckers hoping to see the mangled victims of a car wreck. I've now been turned off of another food for a while thanks to the sickness that was allowed to seep from the dark crevasses of this man's twisted mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2022Format: KindleD E McCluskey returns to hardcore extreme horror with his new novella The Special Stuff.
As the synopsis says, be nice to the people serving you, and this is a story about what can happen if you don’t.
McCluskey channels his inner Matt Shaw with this one, pulling out ALL the stops and adding vile and twisted humor into the mix of vile and brutal comeuppance. While the story itself is great and well thought-out (it’s a solid story), it is also a whole other level of graphic grotesqueness and suffering. But in a good way if you are a fan of Extreme Horror.
Extreme Horror fans rejoice, you’re going to love this gut-twisting, exclaim-out-loud novella.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give me the special stuff
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI cannot say more good things about this author @demccluskey_author . He can write a discussing story that will leave you feeling greasy and gross. After being quite disappointed with the last book I read "The Town" by Bentley Little this was exactly what I needed to bring my reading spirits back up.
This story doesn't disappoint if you've ever had a night out that left you feeling like crap for days. It's disgusting in all the right ways and will leave you feeling like you need a three day shower.
So good !!! 5 stars from me and definitely an extreme horror author to watch out for.
