The Affair Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 125 ratings

A young woman discovers a family journal and the long-hidden secret affair within...

There are some paths in your life you’re never meant to take.
Yet, by some twist of fate, you find yourself on the forbidden road all the same.

Those were the words I stumbled upon as I uncovered a hidden journal that once belonged to my grandmother.

A hidden journal that documents a heartbreaking affair with her husband's brother—a family secret I was unprepared for, especially as my own life began to mirror hers.

Sawyer Gallagher was never on my radar. From the moment I met his younger brother, I was captivated, love-struck, and completely his.

However, some things aren't meant to last, and at thirty-three, I found myself divorced, penniless, and living with my mother. When Sawyer visited our family's antique store seeking a job, I thought: Why not? Life couldn't get much worse.

It didn't take long to notice just how different the Gallagher brothers were. Sawyer was kind, supportive, and—did I mention sexy as hell?

In our small town, I couldn't help but wonder...
Could I possibly fall for my former brother-in-law?
Or was this simply history repeating itself?

A second chance romance with a small town feel.
4 out of 5 stars
A second chance romance with a small town feel.
Rating: 3.8 stars “You and I are like puzzle pieces Elle; two halves of a whole, just waiting to be reconnected. When we come together, it will be perfect.” After hearing so many good things about this author’s books, I couldn’t wait to try them especially this one! I was immediately drawn to this story as soon as I saw the cover and read the blurb. When I first read the blurb, I kind of assumed that this would be an angsty, forbidden and steamy romance. But once I read this book, it wasn’t really what I thought it would be. Not to say it wasn’t a good story, I still enjoyed this book. It just wasn’t what I had initially expected to be. The Affair was more of a second chance romance with a small town feel. It was also a story about heartbreak, healing, and forgiveness. So it was much more than a romance. Overall, this was an enjoyable story with a good cast of characters. By far my favorite character in this story was Sawyer Gallagher who was so charming and lovable. He was definitely a swoon worthy hero! Despite all this, I felt that this story was missing something. In some ways, the storyline wasn’t compelling enough for me and at times the grandmother’s journals almost seemed pointless. I was also a little frustrated with some of decisions that Elle made especially in regards to her relationship with Sawyer. I also wished this was story had explored more of Elle and Sawyer’s relationship. At times, it felt like the story was rushed especially towards the last few chapters. The ending just left me wanting more of this story and characters. But if you’re looking for a small town, second chance romance with little angst, then this is the book for you!

The Affair by J. L. Berg is a standalone contemporary romance all about second chances with new loves and rebuilding your life after great loss. Told from Elle's POV, we join her in the middle of her story. With the loss of her father, her divorce, and the changes in her mother, her life has been turned on it's head over the past year. The antique store her family owns is the one constant, but when her ex brother-in-law shows up looking for work, determined to be involved in the store, she ends up going against the safe choice and saying yes. Sawyer is confident without being pushy, his personality soothes the rough and sharp edges Elle has had since her father's death and her divorce, and despite trying not to, she really likes him. When her life starts to resemble the secret life she finds secreted away in her grandmother's journals she starts to question everything.

This story was emotional, a little sad, a whole load of angsty, but so sweet and uplifting in the end. The healing that takes place between Elle and the various characters is a powerful journey that I was glad to be a part of. Enjoy!

Every J.L. Berg romance I’ve read has been an emotional journey - one that doesn’t offer many clear answers about the characters’ lives and their choices until they struggle through their bad decisions, their complicated past and the mistakes that were made due to fear or misjudgments.

In her newest release, The Affair, Berg fuses the past and the present together, weaving the journal entries of the heroine’s grandmother with what she herself is facing as she tries to move on from her father’s death and the dissolution of her marriage. And while her nana and she do not share the same experience, what Elle learns through her grandmother’s thoughts and revelations is much needed insight about making a choice and holding to it as well as letting go of the past and living in the present without dwelling on what could have been. But those lessons aren’t easily learned because as much as Elle wants to move forward, confusion and fear seem to have their grasp on her and until she can release their hold on her, she won’t be able to start her new life and hopefully find her way once more.

Elle’s struggles are many given what happened to her father as well as the dissolution of her marriage, but what she struggles with the most is letting go of the life she thought she would have because it’s clear that’s not how things played out and quite frankly, as much as it hurts, it definitely seems like she’s better off. And despite the fear and confusion she feels as her feelings for Sawyer grow, it doesn’t mean that her new chance at love will end up like it did with Reed, she just needs to have the courage to push through the self-doubt and the self-sabotage that will undoubtedly occur.

There is so much push and pull between Elle and Sawyer, which is expected given the nature of their past relationship and the feelings that Sawyer has always had for her, but I didn’t feel like what was building between them was forbidden, even if she was married to Sawyer’s brother. The choices that her ex-husband made led to their divorce, so moving forward with Sawyer, despite the fact that they’re brothers.

There are always lessons to be learned, teachings to be understood in every single one of Berg’s stories, and that’s one of the aspects of her writing and her storytelling that I love. She doesn’t simply write romance for romance sake…she writes to share her thoughts about the human spirit…about the human heart…about the ups and downs of life, of love, and of moving forward, even in the most difficult of situations. And I, for one, love her kind of romances.

I give this book 3.5 stars. While it was a good light read, I just kept waiting for a bit more depth from the characters and storyline. Every time I was hopeful that the author would delve a bit deeper, the problem was smoothly solved. Had great potential to be more emotional but I was left feeling like I was getting the abridged version of the story.

An absolutely beautiful story of heartbreak, healing and second chances. This book has ALL the feels... they fairly jump off the page and wrap you up so you feel a part of the story. Sawyer *swoon* is such a... can’t even think of the word. He’s amazing. Elle has been through hell, but with Sawyers help, learns to live again. The two complement each other so well and make a fabulous couple.
I loved every second of this book, start to finish.

When I think of a J.L. Berg book, I think of steamy. Honestly I just didn’t get it with this book. I liked it but I had a hard time with the characters. They just felt kind of flat to me. The best part was the ending and how nicely it was wrapped up.

Thank you Mrs. Berg, you did it to me again. J.L. Berg has a way with words and telling a story. Emotional stories are written so well that you feel what the characters are going through. I get chocked up and shed some tears. This book got me too. I loved it.
