- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2021Trista is a survivor. Even though everyone in her town treats her differently she doesnt let it get to her. It is how it has always been. That is life in Remora.
At least that is until the day she awakens to her powers. Now she must leave behind everything she knows as home to try and understand herself. Everything she worked so hard for suddenly changed. Ascended means she is no longer safe. Family, friends, and her new fiance get left behind as she runs to save herself and her newly discovered past. Her people. The Samaians.
The world around her flips into chaos as the power of her enemies grows stronger and they hunt for her. People she doesn't even know jump to her aid and each new challenge awakens more of her powers from the Everlasting.
But it is a struggle to keep herself alive, safe, and sane amoung the chaos.
I loved how this story gives you different character POVs. Briseis' defiant nature was interesting although she makes me cringe. Her father Curian and his moral gray emotions also gave good insight and depth to the story. Each character is differant but also helps paint the entire picture of what is happening in the world of Mortania.
I cant wait to find out what Trista, Dana, and Lamya will encounter in book 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2022This was a wonderful start to a trilogy and a great introduction to what the author has expanded into the “EverVerse.” While shorter than most high-fantasy novels, Murphy does a wonderful job of creating an engaging and exciting story, while also introducing us to a variety of unique characters. I’m interested to see how the story continues!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2020Would definitely recommend this book to readers who are looking for a new fantasy read to get into!!
My absolute favorite aspect of the book are the exciting characters! Princess Briseis is a badass villain! I'm scared of her lol. Loved to see a woman in a leadership role as well that wasn't stereotyped in one woman hating another because one is old, another is young, ugly vs beautiful, those tropes are kind of tired. So the author definitely did a great job with the villain.
I enjoyed the main character Trista and her friendship with Dana. Really loved all the female representation really! Also thought the characters were very relatable. There was drama, magic, adventure, a romantic subplot and all!
Definitely a fun read and can't wait for book 2!! I want to see where all the characters go from here!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2020The basic story has real merit. The simplistic language is bothersome at times, but much more annoying is the apparent use of editing software, dictation to a poorly trained dragon, or just over reliance on auto suggest, when writing the original manuscript. There aren't as many missing small words as is common in many self published ebooks. Whatever the cause, the result is that there are frequent wrong word selections sprinkled throughout the book. The author attempted to write from many points of view, with moderate success, there are passages where it is a little muddled and confusing when the pov changes.
Anti-Semai-ism in Dresden, Oh My! The use of common tropes is a great tool for a author and help to a reader unless overdone, here it is on the borderline.
I intend to read the next installment before a final judgement, for now the characters are charming enough to make this book entertaining, and worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2020The characters are great and fun to read about! I had a little difficulty getting into the story - but once I got past that, it was a fun read! I am excited to see where the next book takes the characters!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021Man (bad guys) and Samai (the magic, cooler-than-Man good guys) are locked in an epic struggle for who will rule Mortania. I know who I’m betting on!
Although I’m rooting for the MC, Trista, I am intrigued by how formidable her nemesis is.
This author writes female antagonists very well, making the bad guy’s storyline as compelling as the MC’s storyline.
This is an epic fantasy tale that weaves together multiple character’s storylines and the characters are all interesting. I’m looking forward to Book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Compelling Debut
The Antonides Legacy is such a compelling debut! Here are 3 reasons to pick it up:
1. Excellent Villains ~ Princess Briseis is an utterly terrifying villain. Each time the story switched to her perspective I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what atrocity she’d commit next. What fascinated me most about her, though, was her relationship with her father. King Curian knows his daughter is a monster. He’s also completely unable to control her – as a result she now commands his army, and the kingdom of Mortania is slowly becoming more hers than his. It’ll be so fun to see how their relationship progresses.
And then there’s Baron Dreston - misogynistic, manipulative and cruel, he’s a villain I just love to hate.
2. A Strong Female Friendship ~ Trista embarks on her journey with her best friend, Dana. I always love it when female friendships take center-stage in fantasy, and I particularly enjoyed seeing their dynamic evolve as Trista grew into her new role as princess/savior.
3. All that Magic! ~ The Antonides Legacy is stuffed full of magic - from the Empath abilities of the mysterious Lamya to Trista’s wide range of Redeemer powers. Powers that, despite coming to her naturally, also had to be honed through training sessions that were a blast to read.
Charlotte Murphy is definitely an author to watch - can’t wait to see what she thinks up next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story!
I definitely love the idea of the story and I can't wait to read the
next one and find out what happens! I just got a bit lost
sometimes with who was talking, and some of the characters
developed faster than I anticipated, and certain scenes shifted
within a chapter that threw me off a bit but overall I enjoyed
the read! Starting the next one 😍

4.0 out of 5 stars First book in a high fantasy series with all the classic beats
After reading several of Charlotte Murphy's other novels set in the same universe, I decided to give this series a go... The first book of the Antonides Legacy gives off vibes of Eragon, The Gilded Ones and Pawn of Prophecy in setting the scene as a princess brought up in exile after her family's downfall finds herself drawn to reclaim her birthright, restore her oppressed people to glory and save a kingdom on the brink of annihilation...
Trista makes an intriguing heroine, and her struggles to accept her new abilities and lineage are the bread and butter of fantasy novels I love to read (though I do think she could have resisted being shunted onto the path of destiny a little more). Curian makes an intriguing character, the usurper King sincere that he's making a better world for humanity, though I feel he could be a bit more forceful with his depraved, malevolent daughter Briseis, who comes across like a blonde Ramsay Snow... Baron Lyon is being set up as an ambitious antagonist who might upset the scheme of things, but my favourite character thus far has been Lamya, the mysterious empath driven to find Trista and guide her on her path...
Overall, a good opening start to this series and I look forward to reading the next book.
