- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2021The tension as our heroine, Trista, and her nemesis, Briseis, prepare for their imminent battle is the kind you can feel in your gut as you read. As Trista learns to control her powers and learns more about her birthright, she transforms into a stronger, more confident person who is still flawed, in a realistic way.
There is more about Samaian magic in this book. The powers themselves are tied to nature and impressive. I love how the power grows among Samaians as they spend time with each other.
As far as side characters go, I’m rooting for Lamya to get her happy ending in a cottage by the sea when the war is over. We shall see …
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2020This remains an enjoyable story. The mistakes fall mostly on publishing and editing. A better more trusted editor / beta reader group would have caught the problems and fixed or sent back for rewrite. In copy editing there are several notable sentences like: "You wish to kill the Princes, and I will help me do it.". Just really reading the text for what is written, not what is intended is enough to catch most of those errors. It is also one of the hardest things for writers to do for themselves. The writer is too invested with the intent to slow down and really read the words. On issues of timing and whether a romance passage really portrays a character as desired, whether introducing misogyny in villains is beneficial, what level of graphic violence or sex is helpful, that falls on a real editor or publisher to guide the author into the level of polish that the writer seeks to attain. This is a great first draft / rough manuscript ready for submission to a publisher. It is not a fine bit of literature that we can expect to see on bookstore shelves in the distant future. Any book that has the ability to be timeless (fantasy, romance etc. can have a long shelf life if it is well crafted prior to publication. Then again, Joanne Rowling dis send out updates on ebooks after publishing ...
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020I felt so attached to the characters and was so invested in Trista's tale in book one, and book was that much better. I couldn't put the first book down and I couldn't put this one down either! The characters were relatable and felt like people. The plot was fast paced and had me on edge as to what was going to happen next.
My goodness, Princess Briesis was such a great villain. As much as Trista was a great MC, I'm actually scared for her going into book three. I'm curious to see how the author wraps up this story because the tension and stakes are very high!
There are a few minor errors but they aren't glaring in my opinion. The plot keeps you so engrossed that you almost miss them.
I love that Trista is slowly coming into herself and isn't just a "damsel" female MC. She was training and fighting, using magic, meeting people, building a freaking army! It's all so very cool. I'm rooting for Trista so hard! I'm ready for a fight and am so nervous about it at the same time lol
Onward to book three! Great job Charlotte Murphy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute must read
Second part of the trilogy is as gripping as the first.
Character development and a host of new characters to get acquainted with.
Charlotte has the unique ability of bringing you into the book and making you feel what the characters feel.
Such a cliff hanger ending leaves you wanting more yet again!

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn’t put it down!
I finished this as quickly as I finished the first one! Even more gripping then the first book and I’m anxious to see what happens next. I’m invested in the story so far and I feel like I want justice for the characters!

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid second book in this epic fantasy series
A good solid sequel as Trista learns more about her heritage, trains to adopt the mantle of leadership and gain control of her abilities... Her development here is good, and the struggle as she grapples with abilities and feelings she's never known before (I particularly enjoyed the twist at the end of her plot thread)... Quite enjoyed the development of other characters like Lumya and Dana and the new addition of the maternal figure Iona was good: the antagonists are a bit flatter for me, I really am not a fan of the lassitude Briseis gets from her father when similar characters in this genre would have lost their heads for a fraction of her insolence, Curian is too indolent: Baron Dreston with his aspirations of seizing the throne and his utterly loathsome personality is a far more developed foe, and I have mixed feelings about the romantic interest in Oren (Caius Caldoun he is not), but overall a solid sequel evoking The Empire Strikes Back and Eldest in the Inheritance Cycle, a good second book (better than similar books I've read in this genre), and enough that I want to see how this tale ends...
