The Beaufort Bride: Book one of The Beaufort Chronicle Kindle Edition
'Wonderfully written book about Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII.'
As King Henry VI slips into insanity and the realm of England teeters on the brink of civil war, a child is married to the mad king’s brother.
Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond, takes his child bride into Wales where Margaret must put aside childhood, acquire the dignity of a Countess and, despite her tender years, produce Richmond with a son and heir.
As the friction between York and Lancaster intensifies 14-year-old Margaret is widowed and turns for protection to her brother-in-law, Jasper Tudor.
At his stronghold in Pembroke, two months after her husband’s death, Margaret gives birth to a son whom she names Henry, after her cousin the king.
Margaret is small of stature but her tiny frame conceals a fierce and loyal heart and a determination that will not falter until her son’s destiny as the king of England is secured.
The Beaufort Bride traces Margaret’s early years from her nursery days at Bletsoe Castle to the birth of her only son in 1457 at Pembroke Castle. Her story continues in Book Two: The Beaufort Woman.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024I was interested in Margaret Beaufort because she is much talked about after her son became King and her role in that. In every book I have read, movie, or series, she is portrayed as a powerful and ambitious woman. I wanted to learn more about her, so I read this book. It tell of her early life Her first 3 mar rages the birth of her son the future king Henry the 7th. not much is documented about her life as a whole, so the author must embellish and speculate some and does state that at end of book. He tried to use as much fact as possible to write this book. this book is her early years, but the auther did write two other books about her middle and later years. which I plan on reading.

As King Henry VI slips into insanity and the realm of England teeters on the brink of civil war, a child is married to the mad king’s brother. Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond, takes his child bride into Wales where she discovers a land of strife and strangers.
At Caldicot Castle and Lamphey Palace Margaret must put aside childhood, acquire the dignity of a Countess and, despite her tender years, produce Richmond with a son and heir.

REVIEW
Growing up in America, my education did not include learning too much about British kings, the exception being George III, and perhaps Alfred. The Tudors were not common fare for our history books notwithstanding Henry VIII and his six wives, a failing that I have remedied the last few years through historical-fiction novels (and the subsequent research those tales inspire.) The story of Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, is poignantly told in The Beaufort Bride. She lived in an age when girls of the noble classes were often deprived of any control over their lives, subjected to an unknown future with a husband they may have never met. The author does a superb job rendering that fear, that uncertainty, that determination to survive in the character of a 13 year old girl, a pawn in the game of courtly politics. In an easy flowing narrative, we follow the life of Margaret as she comes to grips with her lot in life and the circumstances that place her and her child in the dangerous world of royal succession. I was captivated by this seemingly powerless, and fragile child as she struggled and succeeded to make the best of her situation, and the despair she felt when that situation was shattered.
I enjoy the heck out of books that keep me turning the pages long after the time I've allotted for reading, and this is one of those. Looking forward to continuing Margaret's story. 4 stars
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2016This is the kind of self-published book that you always hope you're going to find when browsing through a subject that interests you-- except that you almost NEVER find it. Let's face it: the average self-published book is just not very good, and a lot of them are downright bad. Judith Arnopp's books form the exception that proves the rule. (And from everything I can tell, they do seem to be self-published.)
The most interesting historical characters are those who had an important role in the events of their time, and yet, for whatever reason, have not been done to death in fiction. (We all need a long, long rest from Anne Boleyn, for instance.) Margaret Beaufort is a great example. She was the force behind the Tudor dynasty, but when you think about it, there are very few fictional treatments of her. And those that do exist have some real issues. Philippa Gregory's portrait of her, for instance, makes her into such a horrible witch that you seriously have to wonder how evil even managed to exist before Margaret came along. Yet we don't know from the historical facts if there's anything accurate about this interpretation. This author comes at the question from a very different angle, taking the facts we know and putting some interesting spins on them. Edmund Tudor is seen as a flawed but sympathetic character, which may well be accurate. By the standards of his time and place, he did nothing wrong by consummating a marriage with a twelve or thirteen year old girl, and it doesn't make much sense to see him as a monster because of behavior that would be criminal about five hundred years later. It's also refreshing to see Margaret's relationship with her second husband seen in a softer light. We reach the end of the book eager to read more, to see how Margaret's character developed after her early hardships, and... and that's the end.
Which is really my only complaint about this book-- it's SHORT!! Well, that and the fact that Margaret's entire history is outlined at the end of the book in detail. I think we needed a spoiler warning before that one, and I skipped over it fast. Just because we know the basic facts doesn't mean that we need to see every detail before finding out how the author handles it in the series.
All in all, this was a treat to read, I'm glad I found it while searching for new Tudor titles, and I hope that the next installment does come out at Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beaufort Bride. By Judith Arnopp.
I have always believed Margaret Beaufort to be a cold, unfeeling woman who would kill for her son, as I suppose any mother would. Reading this book has given me a little insight into what could have been her world and perhaps understanding her a little better. To be given to a man, twice your age, was common practice in Medieval England, but to be used as a wife was not. For Margaret to have conceived a child at thirteen must have been horrifying. This book gives her a love story with Edmund as shows him in a different light to other books that I have read. I prefer this one! Sad it ended for Margaret and their son. Again, she seems to have found contentment with Harry Stafford. I am looking forward to the next book. This book shows how her life was formed. You can already see the steel in her, but it also shows that she did have a caring side too, which is so often airbrushed out in other books. A really good read for some one who did not like Margaret Beaufort very much, but questions have been raised and I find I can actually feel pity for the young Beaufort Bride.
