From the Back Cover

No-one knows where the bugs come from. They emerge from the shadows all over the world, creeping and crawling out of the darkness and burrowing beneath the skin of everyone they encounter.

Once inside, the bugs begin whispering dark thoughts into the minds of their hosts, driving them to carry out horrifying acts of violence against those not infected.

Most survivors try to hide from the bugs and the bugged. Most don't succeed. But all over the world, pockets of uninfected people find ways first to stay alive, then to fight back.

This is their story.

Barry Hutchison is an award-winning children's author and screenwriter. His first book - INVISIBLE FIENDS: MR MUMBLES - was published in 2010 to critical acclaim. The book went on to win the Royal Mail Award for Scottish Children's Books in 2011, by which point two more books in the horror series had been published.

In 2012 HarperCollins Children's Books published Barry's comedy fantasy novel, THE 13TH HORSEMAN, which was even more well-received than MR MUMBLES, with fans including the multi-award-winning best-selling author, Neil Gaiman. Shortly after Horseman won the Scottish Children's Book Award, a sequel - The Book of Doom - was published.

Since 2008 Barry has written over fifty books for children, including several based on the hit Cartoon Network show, BEN 10. When not writing he is usually visiting schools and libraries to run events and story-writing workshops for kids and adults alike.

He recently wrote thirty-six episodes of the CITV comedy series, BOTTOM KNOCKER STREET, starring comedian Phill Jupitus.

Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, Fiona, and their two children, Kyle and Mia. His biggest fear is that someone will one day discover how much fun his job is and immediately put a stop to it. His second biggest fear is squirrels.

Shifting from first person to third person and back again seems like a strange way to tell a story. However Mr. Hutchison makes it work, drawing together two different story lines into one cohesive and gripping story. The bugs are truly frightening and sinister, the characters brought together in a time of tragedy. Pulse pounding action and a very real sense of terror pulls us (the reader) along for an action packed spiral into madness and despair. Come join the fight for humanity and the world as we know it.

The Bug is available in separate episodes or here (the entire season). I'd definitely recommend buying the Season 1 set; you'll end up buying all the episodes so you might as well save yourself a couple bucks.

The basic premise is [possibly alien?!] beetle-like 'bugs' crawling into people and turning them into rage-zombies. Which, granted, sounds a little pulpy when I put it like that. But my chief enjoyment with this one was that it was *well written*. The horror is adequately chilling and the story/plot/characters are engaging, but Hutchinson stands out as an indie in that he ACTUALLY knows how to write. The syntax is varied and he's got good rhythm; he's not trying to blow your socks off with ten-dollar words, but the diction is developed. No glaring errors or typos, and he knows how to use a comma, which puts him ahead of at least 75% of the indie scene.

My only word of warning is that it follows several characters so if you can't dig a split nrrative maybe bewar. Also, it almost goes without saying, but if you have a debilitating insect phobia, definitely don't read this lol. The horror elements can be a little gory and graphic, but I wouldn't call it excessive.

I normally don't enjoy horror type stories, but somehow Barry made this one so page turning, that I couldn't put it down.
The only reason I started reading these books, was that I had just finished reading everything I could find of his comedy writings.
Amazon had recommended the Space Team series to me after I had finished reading E. M. Foner's EarthCent Ambassador series.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Barry J. Hutchison was a very good writer, so when I ran out of his comedy, I figured I would give The Bug a try.
I still am not a fan of horror, but this story is so captivating I would recommend it to almost anyone.

The Bug by Barry J. Hutchison is a story about mysterious bugs using people as hosts and causing said hosts to do evil and bazaar things.

I couldn't get into this story as much as I thought I would, though this was a bazaar story with quite a bit of creepiness. I just had a problem with the execution. It felt a bit choppy to me.

from the author of such a whacky universe, this book offers us a chilling look into the darker side of Barry's mind. Not for the faint of heart and if your kids are a fan of Space Team, I'd suggest you wait til they've seen Rambo level movies before letting them read this one. All in all another home run from Mr. Hutchison.

I won't go over what the story is about, other reviewers have done than extremely well. There seemed to be an excessive amount of f bombs by one character, who happened to be the one with the most rank. I don't know what the Scottish language used in the. book meant but I am supposing it to be accurate. It was a strange yet fascinating tale. It was definitely the most disgusting alien I have ever read about, I almost shivered when Barry J. Hutchison described how the bug slipped (?) sank (?) into the victim's body. Yuck!!! However, the action and the persistence of the characters kept me entranced until the end of Season One. Now on to the next season of The Bug...

Hutchison really shows that he's got range with this. His Space Team series is mostly light-hearted and funny, but this collection is dark and suspenseful. Really worth reading if you're a fan of survival-horror.

This book was a great read. Well worth the money. My only problem with it is that I have to wait for the next chapter. I read Space Team first and really enjoyed it, having said that, I found this series even better. Purely because it managed to be both serious and funny at the sametime. I am not one of these people that just throw out 5 stars for the hell of it either..

I have only recently started reading Novels by Barry Hutchinson. I started reading Space team and found the structure of his stories infectious and extremely humorous. I decided to try The Bug as it fits in nicely with the Space team story . I really enjoyed this book, and I found it easy to empathise with the characters and enjoyed the mix of horror and humour.

Tried that one because of the Space Team and the Deadman series. Really different from those, as it's not funny (not funny as not a in a comedy sense, not because it's boring, though)!

Barry J Hutchison is a really good writer. Personally, I prefer his humorous series, as he's a master at it, but the Bug series is a good one, action-packed, atypical protagonists, end of the world zombie style story with a touch of gore blended with some juicy coarse language!

Can be a little confusing at the start, because there's a lot of characters, but you know, as in all good apocalyptic stories, they won't last enough to confuse you for a long time! So, worth the try. I hope they'll be a sequel! ;)

It's a bit more Shaun of the Dead than Walking Dead with a dash of Bill and Ted and Taggart thrown in. I'd read the Space Team books and was a bit dubious about The Bug as it sounded like a change of style but I enjoyed it.

I think this is what the literary types call 'Scottish noir', but I could be wrong. This is a 'boxed set' of episodes that make a novel. It's gruesome apocalypse fiction, set mostly in contemporary Scotland and the north east of the USA. There's a tinge of extremely black humour reminiscent of Chris Brookmyre and Iain Banks - hence my reference to 'Scottish noir', but Hutchison is very much his own man. I'm in danger of spoiling it a bit when I say he really keeps you guessing, and wrong-foots the reader time and again. Just when you think it can't get any worse for the protagonists, it does.
