The Chocolate Box: A delicious, obsession-driven rom-com with a Jumanji-style twist (Foodie Romance Journeys) Kindle Edition

3.3 out of 5 stars 41 ratings

How far would you go to get the man you can't stop drooling over?

Would you hex a box of chocolates?

Surely it's only giving the Law of Attraction a helping hand?

ELLIE SANCHEZ was spurned during her school days at prestigious Monty’s academy when she was plain Eleanor Finch, playing second fiddle to her idol, BARNABY WESTWOOD, and his mean girl sister, Clementine. Now she's all grown up, she will stop at nothing to turn the tables. The wealthy siblings and their snubbing have been the catalyst for everything that’s gone wrong in her life, from parental neglect to her recent divorce.

When the Westwood travel merchandise company advertises for a new HR manager, Ellie seizes the opportunity to fake her CV and ensnare her quarry in a steamy office romance. Once Barnaby sees how much she’s changed, anyway.

Fast forward six months... He STILL doesn’t recognise her and the company is in a financial mess! Last Chance Saloon-style, Ellie coerces the siblings and their older sister, Brooke (the perpetual spanner in her works) to a rustic gîte in Normandy for a spot of team-building - over a very ‘special’ box of artisan chocolates.

Cue ALL the fireworks in the cocoa bean version of Jumanji...

A tasty forced proximity rom-com with a DEEPLY FLAWED protagonist!

Determined to overcome a lifetime of invisibility and low self-esteem, Eleanor Finch snags an HR-position at a posh travel agency. But it’s not just any agency. It’s owned by siblings she’s known since childhood… but they’re not friends. The sister, Clementine Westwood, in true mean-girl fashion, was her tormentor, and the brother, Barnaby, her lifelong crush who only spoke to her in school as part of bets from his mates.

Now, a decade out of school, with a sleek, fresh look and a new name—courtesy of her ex-husband—Ellie Sanchez prepares to stun her former classmates, with her endgame being becoming BFFs with Clementine, and Barnaby’s wife.

However, her plans fall flat when neither sibling appears to recognize her.

Undaunted, Ellie is a virtuoso in her new position, and even establishes a bond with the oldest Westwood sibling, Brooke.

When the company’s working capital begins coming up short, Ellie takes charge and demands the siblings accompany her on a team-building retreat. Her plans for revenge and recompense take a turn for the worse, due in part to a box of decadent… and hexed chocolates, a fire, and her own arrogance.

Though a tad bit slow in spots, I enjoyed Ellie’s journey to self-realization. However, for me, it wasn’t as much a romantic comedy, but more black comedy/dark humor because while Ellie’s goal is marriage, the read is romance lite. But there are plenty of laugh-out-loud and giggle moments, and the snark and dry wit are off the charts. Ellie’s internal thoughts have some great one-liners, and her exploration of her relationship with her parents, especially her mom, through flashbacks help explain Ellie’s current personality.

In the end, as Ellie’s scheme spirals out of control, she has to decide what’s more important… who she is, who she wants to be, or who she’s pretending to be?

The Chocolate Box is an enjoyable read I do recommend.

    Enjoy!

This a story of revenge - via a box of scrumptious chocolates! Add in some quirky characters you'll love and hate, a teenage crush that has far-reaching consequences, and a team-building trip to France, for a magical, roller-coaster read. As always, Isabella May's mouthwatering descriptions of each chocolate-covered delight leave you craving anything sweet within reach!

Ellie has had a turbulent childhood, from an overbearing mother to not fitting in at the posh school she's sent to. When there's a chance to work with the rich Westwood family, she sees a chance to set in motion an idea she's been planning for a long time.

The more you read, the more the story pulls you in and you want to see how Ellie is going to carry out her idea. With a touch of the supernatural, and a huge dollop of magic, Ellie's journey of self discover is a little crazy, pretty explosive, and full of surprises!

This was a pretty good book but not a great read for me. I loved the storyline about a girl who was mistreated in school and wanted revenge and make the "love of her life" fall in love with her. I liked how a box of chocolates were hexed so that Ellie can seek her revenge and get what she wants. However, there were many parts that I just could not get into but yet there were some parts that thrilled me. Close to the ending I could not put the book down and I did like how it ended. The ending was really different from other books and I was surprised on what happened in the end. I do not want to go into too much detail though in fear of giving spoilers. Although, this book was not great for me I do feel that others would enjoy this book.

This books story line was hard to follow. I didn’t care for it at all. I kept reading to try to figure it out and here’s the basic gist…
Preteen girl falls in love with popular boy- he doesn’t reciprocate so she crashes his business by becoming his HR manager with plans to marry and subsequently divorce him as a means to punish him. The business is in trouble so the new “HR manager” (read preteen girl now grown up) makes the boy (now adult) and his (adult) sisters do some crazy crappy bonding retreat to magically make the boy fall in love with her. It goes totally wrong. The end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life Really Is Like A Box Of Chocolates!

The Chocolate Box (Foodie Romance Journeys Book 3) by Isabella May
The Chocolate Box is a heartwarming romantic comedy which leaves you with a real feel good feeling. It has some great laugh out loud moments but also lots of romance and I was hooked from start to finish. Although book three in the ‘Foodie Romance Journeys’ series it can happily be read as a standalone story. Eleanor Finch spent her school days at the prestigious Monty’s academy being spurned by Barnaby Westwood, who happened to be her idol and his sister, Clementine who was a show off. Now that she’s Ellie Sanchez and all grown up she wants revenge. Ellie blames everything that has gone wrong in her life on the siblings and so when the Westwood travel merchandise company advertises for a new HR manager, Ellie decides she’s just right for the job. Wanting to prove to Barnaby how much she’s changed Ellie is obviously upset when six months later he still does not even recognise her and then she finds out the company is in a financial crisis.
Ellie persuades Barnaby, Clementine and older sister Brooke to go on a team building trip to a rustic gîte in Normandy. Ellie takes a ‘special’ box of artisan chocolates with her to help with the team building. I thoroughly enjoyed this fun story by May and I absolutely loved the front cover of the book which was so eye catching. This was a page turner of a novel with some lovely characters which the author really bought to life and this made me feel engaged in the story. The storyline flowed well and the plot had plenty of drama, romance and chocolate, a wonderful combination. This is a perfect book to curl up with along with a lovely box of chocolates.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tasty Does of Magic

As a self-confessed chocoholic I was looking forward to reading this book and I wasn’t disappointed! The thing I love about Isabella May’s writing, apart from the sumptuous language and delicious descriptions is its originality. A school-girl crush becomes a life-long obsession for lead character Ellie Sanchez, so much so that she resorts to a little black magic in the hope of having her unrequited love returned, with the aid of a very special box of chocolates. The characters were well-defined, I loved the excepts from the lifestyle magazine which gave the story a whole new layer, and the letters from Ellie’s mum drives the story along, giving a poignant insight into Ellie’s troubled childhood. Humour abounds, but its all also a story about finding karma and come-uppance. Whether you like your chocolate light, dark or the many flavours inbetween, this book has it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do You Trust The Chocolate Box?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 3, 2020
How far would you go to get the man of your dreams? A spot of social media or real-life stalking? Going to the same pubs and him and his mates? Making friends with his siblings? What about getting a job at his company? Ellie goes above and beyond what any normal person would do to get the attention of their obsession. The lengths she goes to are phenomenal…

With each chapter, I was intrigued to find out what Ellie has up her sleeve especially once she took the Westwood siblings to deepest rural France. The thing is Ellie in control? The more I got to know her, the less I felt sorry for her. The girl who seemed so infatuated and besotted with Barnaby Westwood had a dark side, manipulating all around her for her own means. A woman scorned is a dangerous woman and Ellie is dangerous with a capital D!!!

The Chocolate Box is a highly entertaining read from May. Obviously the cover had this reader drooling over all the sugary treats as with all her other deliciously sounding reads. But they say don’t judge a book by it’s cover and what I found inside The Chocolate Box wasn’t saccharine sweet. The leading quartet all had the qualities on the surface to like but as I peeled the wrappers on their personalities back, the fillings to these characters were rather different. Don’t expect a happy-go-lucky light read from The Chocolate Box, this is a book with a bit of a difference when it comes to unrequited love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melt in the Mouth Delicious

Isabella May does it again - another book that has your mouth watering with every turn of the page.
In Ellie, we have a leading lady that you just love to hate! She's arrogant, annoying and your hand itches to administer a slap yet... You also find yourself admiring her chutzpah! The bitter taste she leaves on your tongue is, however, tempered by the lovely Brooke whose sweetness is endearing and who you want to take home as your best friend. It's hard to believe she's related to the lust-of-Ellie's- life, Barnaby, whose ability to be obnoxious is only superseded by his other sister, Clementine.
May does an excellent job of creating a wonderful selection box of characters in this story of lust, revenge and dishing out some just-desserts!
    An easy five stars.
