EDITORIAL REVIEWS
"The book flaunts the grim panache of a London crime saga, and all the characters are engaging, no matter how despicable they are. Not for the faint of heart, but this novel’s character studies and ever shifting plot will excite fans of English noir." Kirkus -- a Recommended Read.
"The Evil And The Pure is a deliciously dark delight; a gritty, realistic look at the depths of human depravity. The journeys of the four men are fascinating and enviably complex. The twists and turns have you reeling with shock. A glory to read. 5/5 stars." Matthew R Bell's BookBlogBonanza.
"A thoughtful and enthralling examination of a society that is seedy, corrupt and painfully uncompromising. Darren Dash is a skillful writer, whose greatest talent lies in his depictions of character. Few writers can so easily and powerfully communicate the complexities of people dragged into a world of darkness and despair." Safie Maken Finlay, author.
"I found myself brilliantly horrified and captivated as I read and was taken along on a dark journey with a range of dangerous, sick and even innocent characters." Chase That Horizon.
"An amazing read... a book you won’t want to end... It’s got the cast complexity of a Maeve Binchy novel as if written by a violent madman, and I mean that as a compliment! 5/5 stars." Kelly Smith Reviews.
"Although it’s dark, great characterization and a superb plot keep you turning the pages. If you’re up for an adventure, this book is for you. I rate this book a five-star read." Tracey Lampley, author.

About the author

Darren Dash is better known as Darren Shan, under which name he has sold over 25 million books worldwide, mainly in the YA market. While Darren is still in love with the world of YA and as active on that front as ever, he is now also exploring the darker world of the night with his adult works, as Darren Dash.
Darren's real name is Darren O’Shaughnessy. He was born on July 2, 1972, in London, but is Irish (despite the strong Cockney accent that he has never lost) and has spent most of his life in Limerick in Ireland, where he now lives with his wife and son.
Darren went to school in Limerick, then studied Sociology and English at Roehampton University in London. He worked for a cable television company in Limerick for a couple of years, before setting up as a full-time writer at the age of 23. Darren was 17 when he finished his first novel. (It has yet to be published, but hopefully he'll get around to rewriting and editing it into shape for a future Darren Dash release.) For the next several years, sandwiched between university and work, he wrote a book a year, experimenting with different ideas, genres, lengths and styles. When he started writing full-time, his output shot up to 5 to 6 books per year, and although that has dipped in recent years, he has still been an incredibly prolific author, releasing 49 books between February 1999 and December 2016.
All of his early books were adult-oriented, and his initial breakthrough was with an adult book, in February 1999, called "Ayuamarca" (later republished as "Procession of the Dead" under the Darren Shan banner), the first of a trilogy of books known as "The City". That was followed by "Hell's Horizon" in February 2000. Then, several years later, when the first two were re-edited and re-released, he published the third book, "City of the Snakes". All of these came out under the Darren Shan name, as did a one-off thriller with supernatural elements called "Lady Of The Shades." But Darren never felt comfortable releasing his adult work under the same name as his YA work, and decided to create a new pseudonym for his more mature novels in 2014 -- which led to the birth of Darren Dash.
A big film buff, with a collection of nearly five thousand movies on DVD, Darren also reads lots of books and comics, and likes to study and collect original artwork, especially comic art, modern art, and sculptures. Other interests include long walks, watching football (he’s a Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland fan), listening to pop and rock music, theatre, worldwide travel, sampling the delights of both gourmet cuisine and finger-licking junk food, and dreaming up new ways to disturb and entertain his readers!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2014In the shadowy underground of the world, there's darkness in the sweetest people and gentleness in the roughest. They go together like this, hand in hand, the shadow and the light, the bad and the good, the evil and the pure. Sometimes, you'll be surprised which side takes precedence. This is something that winds its way throughout in THE EVIL AND THE PURE.
From the onset, the use of voice in this novel is spectacular. It grabbed me from the start and didn't let me go until long after the final page where my head remained reeling. It uses a colloquial, well-crafted narration that provides insight beyond the limited scope. It lets the readers develop an intimate relationship with the main characters, letting the reader see their lives come together and intertwine, then individually fall apart. The pacing is smooth and carries you right through, where personal promises of "just one more page" are hard to keep. It was an engaging read, but by no means does that mean it's light, playful reading. It had moments of pure darkness with some of the most vile monsters because of how plausible and REAL they are--because they're HUMAN, in all of their darkness and perversion, greed and guile.
Personally, I absolutely adored this. This book was gangsters and grit. It brought forth some characters I positively love and others that make me feel ill. It had me cringing and on the edge of my seat in rotating intervals. Definitely not a book for the under aged or overly squeamish, but so, so potent and powerful. If you like gangster stories and are willing to venture down the crooked path of sex, money, drugs, and mobsters, this fantastic, gritty, gripping work has your number.

A great read and held my attention right to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2014This book is about human nature. Well mostly about human nature at its worst but there are surprises and there can be goodness where you least expect it.
The story brings together a bunch of characters in an ordinary location around central and south London but the characters are far from ordinary. There are weak ones, savage ones, pathetic ones, cruel ones, seemingly pure ones and some basically horrible ones. The thing is that they are all so real and believable that you would be forgiven for looking around at the people in the street after reading the book and wondering what is really behind their masks of faces.
The story is about gangsters, drugs and a lot more. It a cleaver story and the story moves along at a great pace and never missed a beat.
I don't want to spoil the plot but suffice to say that you will be sucked into a world that is both believable and ordinary yet almost unbelievable at the same time.
I loved this and hope the writer will publish more as I already have future books on my wish list
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2014The Evil and the Pure is a disturbing, yet the most brilliant adult book I have read. Now I have read some Stephen King books and The Shining was my favorite adult book: The Evil and the Pure is undoubtedly my favorite adult book now. The characters were interesting for lack of a better word and the ending for these characters are fitting. Excellent book and raises the questions of what we human beings are doing with our lives, and raises the question of not only human morality but also human ethics.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2014I have grown up loving this author and when I heard he had published an adult book...I was all in.
The book itself takes you on a sickening, gut-renching adventure that you want to end, but at the same time you hunger for more. The characters are complex and have such interesting backgrounds. The Shanster (Dash) always seems to find a intriguing and surprising way to tie in his characters. I love his sick imagination and the imaginable things that he makes happen.
I have this book 4 stars only because I reallllllly wanted Gawl to have the worst punishment of them all. Hoping Sandy only choked him only to unconsciousness and dragged him back to the lab where he could torture him relentlessly.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2018I felt little connection to the characters when I stared the book. They are just not the type of people that I can relate to -or so I thought. The growth of the characters, finding out that deep down they had redeeming qualities and some of those surfaced making me fall in love with some of the characters. I learned a lot about myself while reading this book as I was certainly quick to judge and had to face that not everything is as it appears. I enjoyed the storyline and the grit and will read it again one day without judgment. It takes talent for an author to turn unlovable characters into heros, or at least relatable. Overall a good story and recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2015I couldn't put this book down! It is a mix of gangsters in London. Everything ties together so well. Yes, it is quite disturbing, but the writing is fantastic. The characters are so well thought out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal and Clever
I've known a few young adult authors that I have grown up with that have branched into books for adults and few have done so as successfully as this. Under another, very similar name Darren Dash has written a range of horror books for young adults but this is in no way suitable for the same audience.
This book has four main characters who live separate but connected lives in the London underworld but events conspire to bring them together in the most brutal of ways. There's Big Sandy, henchman and assassin to a crime boss but doesn't really like killing. Clint Smith, cousin to the crime boss and small-fry drug dealer who wants much more. Kevin Tyne who pimps out his own sister for the perverse pleasure of it. And Gawl McCaskey, a brutal Scotsman who has travelled the world committing crimes and been hated by everyone.
Each character is unique and brilliantly realised. It doesn't take long into the book before you feel you know each one of them intimately, whether you want to or not. There's also a strong supporting cast who are also really well characterized. The plot is deftly weaved together, each chapter focusing on one of the four leads and we often see the same thing from different perspectives as the characters move together and away again. At the same time it is utterly brutal with graphic descriptions of violence, sex and drug use. It's this that makes it a far cry from the author's books for a younger audience. None of it feels gratuitous though, everything either fits into the plot or tells us something more about our characters.
I also liked the fact that this book gave you something to think about. Whilst there is no doubt that all the characters do evil deeds, does that make them evil? The author gives us plenty of good sides to most of the characters, making them conflicting individuals rather than simply saying they are pure evil. Having said that I find it impossible to say that one of the four lead isn't completely and utterly evil but I'll leave you to find out which that is.
A very different book to his young adult works, gritty, brutal and set entirely in the real-world but with a really clever plot, this is a really good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars a wicked read!
So, in case you didn't know, this is Darren Shan, author of the amazing The City trilogy, the awesome, Darren Shan Vampire series, the truly EPIC Demonata series and the hugely popular Zom'B series.
Now to business, my first thoughts were, well this is very well written, the characters are coming alive off the page, all as I would expect from Master Shan! I then began to think, hmmm, this is all very dark and seedy but I'll keep going, there's bound to be a supernatural twist, like in The City.....
Nope. Carried on, being introduced to more nasty people from the dark, twisted underbelly of society.... Then I started to think, really, no, this is too "underbelly" for me, think I'll have to leave it, quality as it is, not my scene.
But, oh, no!! By this point I am totally unable to put it down! Some of the characters I loathe but some of them have grown on me, I care about them now. I need to know what happens to them!! So I continued and the further I read, the more hooked I got until the last 1/4 of the story was truly "unputdownable".
I just finished it and it feels good 😊 I like how it turns out. There's one character I'd love to have seen come out better but I can see why he couldn't. No Spoilers though!
This is an amazing read for adults, in quality of characters and storytelling, it's right up there with The City. Master Shan has woven a truly fascinating tale of darkness, wretchedness and salvation from the gritty, seedy, hidden streets. I thoroughly enjoyed it and that is fine praise considering it really wasn't my thing.... But, like I said, I had to know!!
Excellent, Master Shan!! Your mind is truly a deep, dark but thrilling place 😀

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, can't wait for more to come!!
The Evil and the Pure is the first novel published under the name Darren Dash, and the first self published, for which he should be applauded as it is a brave step for anyone. Having loved all his adult stuff before I felt safe that this would be a good read, but I don't think I anticipated the change in direction. Change however in this instance is goooooood and I was not disappointed I was also initially a bit miffed that I HAD to read it off my kindle but that was soon lost as I became lost in the story.
Set in London (so I could easily imagine a lot of the areas!) it follows the interlocking stories of a group of characters whose lives become intertwined because of each others failings for greed, weakness and temptation. With drugs, brothels, murder and rabid dogs Dash has served up a gritty grim picture of London, that made me hyper aware of the people I was passing on the street, which only added a reality to the characters. Each character stood out in themselves with strong voices and even stronger personalities. It also presents interesting questions on areas from loyalty to faith, and the way addiction (in its various forms) affects peoples lives.
I enjoyed reading this (if that's the rights sentiment to take) and hope there is much more to come from Dash

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book from a great writer.
I had read all books by this author and I can easily say this is just another great book. If I did not NEED to go to sleep I would have read it from start to finish like most of his other books. Anyone who like's Darren's earlier books and is now able/allowed to read an adult book, do it you will not be let down. In this book Gawl is Scottish and I live there and his speech is matched so inline you have a feel for the preparation and research gone into it.
I must say i am a Big Sandy fan! Look forward to any more books coming from Darren 10/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Another marvellous read from Darren Shan
The Evil and The Pure is incredibly dark in places. There were some pages that made me feel ill just reading. The only reason I haven't awarded it 5 stars is that the build up to the concluding scene dragged a bit. Other than that it was a Masterpiece!
