The Guy in the Window Paperback – November 5, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
I was in the middle of my divorce when Adam messaged me. I believe his exact words were, “Hi. I think you’re my dad’s brother. Would you like to get to know me?”
My brother and I had never been close, so I’d only met his adopted son a few times when he was very young. Instinct told me to ignore the message, and I did. For a few days. It took an exhausting fight with my soon-to-be ex-wife and half a bottle of whiskey for me to change my mind.
Adam first became “sort of my nephew.” Next, he became the guy who helped me find an apartment in the building next to his. He was a sweet, cheerful young man doing his best to raise his four-year-old daughter, which led to him becoming the guy who wanted to help me patch up my relationship with my own daughter.
Then one night as I got ready for bed, I looked across the alleyway to the next building, where I saw him getting ready for bed too.
I couldn’t look away to save my life.
It was the night he also became the guy in the window.

About the author

Romance Across the Spectrum.
I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.
There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.
Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.
I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.
Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.
I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.
~Cara.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2023This book was very well written and a pleasant read. It was extremely easy to connect with the characters and experience their every emotion along with them. I will admit I've read this book more than one time, heck more than two for that matter. But, every time I had it was just as heartwarming and exhilarating as the first time. I will recommend that you read this book if you haven't already. You will not regret it. One message that is expressed in this book is that love is a beautiful thing and can be found very unexpectedly from the most unlikely source. Everyone needs a healthy intimate connection with someone. Someone who will see the gem under the wreck and help it shine. Extremely good work Cara Dee, you are an amazing writer.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023Everett and Adam took me on an emotional journey that was heartfelt and also fun. Their banter and just overall friendship was so enjoyable. Watching Everett beginning to live his life after a divorce was like watching a drowning man come up for air. The relationships with the daughters were vastly different but equally heartwarming. Cara Dee had once again created characters that I began caring about almost instantly. My only tiny issue is that Adam's reason for reaching out after so many years was never quite clear. But in the long run, all that matters is the beautiful story being told.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2019Oh my gosh, this book was so, so good.
I really enjoyed this hot, steamy number more than I expected to.
Not that I don't have faith in this author; on the contrary, I have read and loved several of her books.
I just wasn't sure where the story might go...
My first thought was about the child, as I often find kids in this type of story to be annoying and superfluous.
Not so, here. This little girl is a delight!
Secondly I love the GFY type theme, but get so bored with the over-used "I'm married to a woman, but I experimented back in college so maybe I'm Bi" trope.
I was immensely relieved that Cara did not go there with this one.
This was a beautiful, relatively slow burn story of a young (but not juvenile) man who, out of the blue, gets in touch with, who he regards as the only family member he has left. Even though he is several years estranged.
This lands right in the middle of a chaotic and stressful period in the older man's life, and because of this they almost do not connect at all.
I was particularly endeared to Adam, as at times he displays admirable maturity and level headed traits.
It is so common in age gap tales for the younger to be portrayed as clueless and childish.
I won't say more, but really, this is a worthwhile read.
I loved it to bits!
Highly recommended!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2019What a sweet feel-good story. Everett and Adam were a delicious mix of wholesome, sexy, and dirty. I wish the story was longer because I didn’t want it to end. I loved how Ev absolutely OWNED his growing feelings for Adam. Bella was absolutely adorable, and the way Grace meshed in the family by the end was perfect. This might be my favorite CD book, and I’ve certainly enjoyed a lot of them. Something about it just made me feel good. The two leads were certainly likeable, and their chemistry jumped off the pages. I would have liked to seen Ev’s coming out to his buddies, but this is a low angst, fun story of two men unwittingly falling in love. Pure enjoyment. (And the cover?? Love it)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2024I don't normally write reviews, but I feel like this meets constructive feedback.
Positive: One, the taboo nature of it is extremely intriguing. Two, the story narrative components of divorce, falling in love with a man, two separate children, fallout from history of family drama, and a host of other plot beats -- that really in theory -- enrich a story and create authentic struggle for two people to be together.
Where it deeply filtered:
Stories must wrench out every piece of emotion introduced into the narrative, to make it worth being written in the first place. All of these obstacles and life problems that everyone faces, really were there on a silver platter. A love story with necessary struggles. unfortunately, Cara, did not treat any of these components with true development. In addition, the plot beats of the relationship were often skipped and or recap in fall chapter. Then doing it off screen.
A big no-no in writing, is to leave answered questions or entire pot lines untouched. The reason, Everett and Adam even met is because Adam the adopted son of Everett's brother, had had a big fallout with their family, and thus, it gave them something relatable and also set up a potential challenge and plot point. But it was never touched with any significance.
Being married to a woman for 25 years, and then being attracted to your adopted nephew, though you've never knew him, it is still a challenge that needs to be dealt with. One, that you're all of a sudden attracted to a man, which is great, but try and tell the story without making it even a blip in the plot. You can't. But is exactly what Cara did. There was no hesitation, even with sex , there was no learning stage. And the significant moments of their sex life was also skipped around a lot. Leaving about two full sex scenes. And then a couple cutaways.
This is ill-advised, because their sex life is incredibly important to their story. Big component, was an ex-wife and a teenage daughter. The buildup of certain events like the teenage daughter finding out about her dad now being in a same-sex relationship, was done off page. 😳
You can see I'm trying to form a picture of how rushed, and shallow the story ended up being. It's a shame, because this was structured well and set up to be an interesting narrative. And unfortunately fell off very quickly. Very disappointing.
I did round this up to three stars simply because she did a good job with the inner dialogue, not suffocating the story, As well as, due to it being well written, it's just not narratively written well...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and sexy
I had this book in the queue for a while, not too sure I’d be into it. Finally, the sexy close-up on the cover drew me in and I couldn’t put it down! I loved the main characters, together and separate. Adam was super sexy and fun. All the characters were believable and had depth. Adam and Ev getting to know each other was natural and organic. I especially liked how the 2 guys didn’t know how to cross the line of getting together, but that it wasn’t drawn out with a ton of angst. It happened and then va-voom. Hot.
The author doesn’t fill in every little detail with stilted minutiae, she allows time to pass and trusts readers to know what’s happening. It’s refreshing to read her stories. I’ve enjoyed a couple of Cara Dee’s books before and after this, I’ll definitely seek out more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Guy in the Window
The Guy in the Window – Cara Dee

5.0 out of 5 stars short and flirty
Surprisingly this is a very low angst book, although it’s short (honestly I would have loved it to be longer), it’s definitely got a lot of heat and love in it. For the smut it definitely leans into the forbidden aspect
