"I wish more books like this had been around when I was a child, it would have made reading even better and more imaginative. A character like Trixie would have been a great read as a child and was also a very cute and loving character to read as an adult." - Belle and the Novel
"This was a really fun read and I can imagine it being a story that is loved and read over and over - it certainly has some brilliant quirky characters!" - Donna's Book Blog
"From a parents point of view I liked that the book showed that we can all be different but all feel the same when we are left out, made fun of or are bullied." - Orchard Book Club's Mini Reviewers
"I may be an adult, but I still found myself snorting with laughter at the humour, and the snippets that I read out to my class had them giggling away and roaring with laughter." - The Bookish Fairy
"[My daughter] read it through in one evening and there was complete joy and laughter that could be heard through the ceiling to my office below. She loved the story." - Girl Who Sciences

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2018What a brilliant, funny children’s story this turned out to be! When Trixie Grimble’s school closes, her Mum and Stepdad decide to enrol her at Monroe’s School for the Different (Monstacademy), a decidedly different boarding school, so her Mum has more time to train her kittens to become a cat circus! Now, not only is the school a boarding school but Trixie is the first ordinary, human pupil ever to attend – her peers and teachers there include vampires, werewolves, banshees, ghosts and goblins! It is a hilarious story, packed with humourous incidents and encounters, especially as Trixie is somewhat accident prone. Settling into a new situation, making friends (and enemies), working with others to create a school banner for the Halloween Parade, and being suspicious about what one fellow pupil is up to, all add to the suspense and hilarity in this engaging story.
This story has great characters and is likely to appeal to both boys and girls. The language is child friendly and the chapters make it a great one for both independent and shared reading. There are lovely line illustrations throughout the story, adding to its appeal. As a primary teacher, I can definitely envisage using this book with children for a variety of discussions and a stimulus for other activities, especially around Halloween or as part of PSHE as well as Literacy. There are three activity pages after the story and a short sequel story about when Trixie returns home for the Christmas holidays ‘The Christmas Cat Circus’. I have no hesitation in highly recommending it as a fun read for children and the young at heart, too, and teachers should definitely check it out! I am really glad this is the start of a whole series of stories based around the Monstacademy and hope to read more from this talented author (and teacher) in future.
I requested and was given a copy of this book without obligation. I chose to read it and this is my honest review after doing so.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2018This was a really fun read and I can imagine it being a story that is loved and read over and over - it certainly has some brilliant quirky characters!
The chapter length is good and I liked that the paragraphs were kept fairly short to keep attention. The story is easy to follow and the main characters are great - well described and likeable. The images are lovey!
Four stars from me for this one - a well written story - looking forward to reading the second book in the series!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2019Audiobook review: The Halloween Parade is a good clean youth short story involving a mystery and intriguing characters. The narrator did a great job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2022This was a cute story. Trixie starts at a new school. She has trouble with some of the kids but finally makes a couple of friends. Since it's a Monster academy, she and her new friends a cursed werewolf & a vegetarian vampire must make sure the school parade goes smoothly. A great quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2021This was a really cute kids book with a normal girl in an abnormal school. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for children aged 6-12 to read themselves, or have read to them
I read this book to my six year old son and he was enamoured with it right from the very first page. I sometimes struggle to get him to engage with a story, especially a longer book like this, but he was absolutely gripped and begged me to read more every night! I also enjoyed reading it and there were many parts where we laughed together about some of the hilarious scenes in the book!
As a teacher, I could also see myself using this book in class, as the text is child-friendly and has good potential for activities and discussions.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2018The Halloween Parade (Monstacademy Book 1) by Matt Beighton, is a delightful story for youngsters (and oldsters) about a young girl's plight, Trixie Grimble, who is sent to a boarding school against her will. Not exactly a normal school either - Monroe's School for the Different (Monstacademey). The school is full of Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, Banshees etc.. and as the story goes, it turns out Trixie is the first ordinary person to attend the school. At first she is scared and nervous but eventually, as the story unfolds, she makes friends. It is a fun filled adventure full of surprises. An enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 6-year-old son loved it!
Monstacademy: The Halloween Parade is a humourous and fun-filled book for kids that tells the story of Trixie Grimble, a young girl who is sent to a new school called Monroe's Academy for the Different. Aptly nicknamed Monstacademy, the school is full of very unusual pupils including vampires, werewolves and banshees. Will she hate it or will she eventually manage to make some friends among the monstrous misfits?
My almost-6-year-old son enjoyed Matt Beighton's book immensely. He's a bit young to read it completely on his own so I read it to him. He found the story very amusing, particularly all the zany names such as Miss Flopsbottom and Mr Snickletinkle, and he liked the funny descriptions of the unusual characters, such as the Werewolf boy who turns into a poodle and the vampire that's vegetarian! My son's favourite bit was when Esme, another Werewolf, chases after a ball which lands in a pond. Beighton has created a well-paced book that builds nicely to its eventful finale. The book also has lots of added value in the form of activities and a short story at the end of the book. Highly recommended for kids aged 6 and up!
