The Intern : An MM Workplace Standalone Romance Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 954 ratings

Devlin

Sex comes with a price tag.

One I’m quite willing to pay.

In fact, I prefer it.

It’s easier that way, and in my life, I prefer ease. Prefer for most things to be transactional.

So when the intern disrupts my day, I’m not happy about it. I have a dark and dirty little secret he knows about. One that could destroy my reputation in a world where reputation is everything.

That makes him dangerous.

He could ruin me professionally, wreck my life, but the touch of his mouth to mine, the feel of him in my arms—they’re all I can think about.

I’m intoxicated.

Drunk on him, when I’ve always been sober.

Micah

I’m gay.

The freedom in admitting that is intoxicating. Enough to make me feel drunk with the relief of finally being myself.

But what feels better?

Devlin.

He’s my boss. He holds my future in his hands in more ways than he knows, but he isn’t as free as I am. Doesn’t have the same freedom I do to own up to what he is.

Because of that, I know I’m losing him.

I can feel us becoming DOA.

But is he worth fighting for when he won’t admit what I am to him? What we mean to one another?

I guess you’ll have to read on to find out…

THE INTERN is a standalone contemporary MM romance, with an easter egg for fans of Serena Akeroyd’s novels.

Sensitive readers please note, this book includes a graphic rape scene.

Okay, so, this.story!, gaaaaaaaaaah, what an unexpectedly awesome surprised it turned out to be. Not because I do not hold the author’s talent in high regard or because I had low expectations going in of any kind. It surprised me because it was a full package of yumminess and heart and a whole bunch of *happy sigh* and I dunno, but I just didn’t see it coming till I was in it and it was glorious! This is also one of those stories where you’re going to want to stab one of the leads in the eyeball repeatedly with an ice-pick … until you don’t :) See! Add growth to all the things I mentioned above that make this story great! This was more than just a HEA romance journey and we had a front row seat to all of it. I know I sound vague AF but I’m not giving you plot points so … trust me? Lol I just started my relationship with Serena’s words this year and so far she has made me a stupidly happy reader and I am looking forward to her continuing to make me stupid happy for a long time! Happy reading!

I love cleansing my palette with a new-to-me author and although you’ve seen reviews on the DLS page, this was my first experience of reading Serena’s work. I just want to thank my fellow book friend for introducing me to her work, because now I just want to spend all of my money buying up this authors backlist.

Micah and Devlin may be separated in age by more than a decade, but these two show some strong chemistry both in and out of the bedroom. I was so enamored by their character traits. They hold so many things in common and their personalities make them so likable and easy to fall in love with. I honestly didn’t expect that coming from Micah, but he is wise and mature for his 22 years. He’s young, determined and outspoken. On the other hand, Devlin controls the people and space around him with a heavy hand. I guess that comes with the territory of being wealthy and a viscount. The determination that comes with an alpha businessman doesn’t stop short when Micah is faced with a traumatic experience that involves a fellow work colleague.

Starting off the first chapter made me squirm with all kinds of hot and heavy emotions. You’ll see what I mean if you decide to pick up this book. It had my book club in a frenzy when I showed a sample of what I was reading. I loved watching these two grow into their new relationship and see the characters develop as well. The main focus of the story remains on Devlin and Micah as they both are forced to face the public and their family members’ judgment constantly. And they do it together as a supportive team.

I cannot tell you enough how much I enjoyed this story, because this book kept me in my feelings. At times it was funny and emotionally challenging. At others it was passionate and steamy. For those who are not triggered by my warning up above, I would suggest going in blindly. This story was a lot lighter than what I normally dip my fingers into, but still contains all the heavy emotions I look forward to experiencing when reading a dark/gray romance.

The audiobook is delicious with Jacob Morgan doing a British Accent. I had to rewind a few times as I was in a trance and didn’t quite get the whole context 😂
I loved these men. I didn’t love all that happened but I loved seeing them care for one another in these instances. They were both virgins in their own way and it was a joy to watch them grow.
Also, Devlin’s parents just made me laugh!

I have no words. Dealing and Micah's story is just beautiful. The fact that they both have had to hide who they really are to appease their family. The age gap didn't bother them because they finally found what they wanted and needed from each other. The trauma Micah experienced had my heart in pieces. It's not often one hears or even reads about this. Felt all these emotions and Serena as always made you feel everything. A beautiful story of finding love no matter the cost.

Serena Akeroyd you have become one of my favorite authors. I devoured this book in one sitting and it was so worth it. This book has difficult scenes that can trigger people, but Serena had a way of putting a spotlight on what victims go through and I’m very thankful that Serena sent all her love to people who go through these types of situations. Serena, I want to thank you for writing this masterpiece and I cannot wait to read more of your books. This is the first time I have read a book from Serena Akeroyd. I’m so thankful that I bought this book because Serena has a way of weaving a story that had a death grip on me from the very beginning. Thank you so much for writing this book.

I enjoyed Micah and Devlin. Watching Devlin learn how to love was very sweet.
A lot of the story was hard. Sexual assault is not easy and never simple. I appreciated seeing the struggle.
    I would recommend this.

I enjoyed the book, but it didn't feel like I was right there with them. As though it was told by someone who wasn't engaged or invested in getting the story out there, it was like a really good book read in monotone. I see this author writes a lot of m/f, so maybe that's why it fell flat for me. There is something to be said for a female author who can write a good m/m romance.
I came across this on Audible but wasn't willing to pay the $13 bucks for it, not when most run $8. Joe Arden and Jacob Morgan are 2 of my favorite narrators, and so worth the money, but not for an author I am unfamiliar with.

WOW, great, great story and totally loved the characters. Micha has a friend bring him to Vice to use the dark room. Devlin walks in. So begins a story of a young man finding his way and an older man still hiding. Their journey is heartbreaking as well as heartwarming. These characters develop over tge story and you won't be sorry you spent time with this book. My first M/M story and I enjoyed it.

The Intern by Serena Akeroyd is an absolute emotional rollercoaster of a book! This book really tugged at my heartstrings, broke my heart, and put it back together.

The story is powerful and emotional, but it does contain some triggers, so be mindful of that when reading.

The chemistry between Micah and Devlin, despite their age gap, was scorching and palpable
Micah, 22 years old, is handsome, eager, smart, charming, and sexy, and despite his past and struggles, it is so easy to fall in love with his beautiful soul.

Devlin on the other hand, with his British aristocratic charm is a little bit older, at 38, true-blue blood, smart, arrogant, gorgeous and vulnerable in his feelings for Micha.

Micah was just perfect for Devlin.

Everything was going on smoothly and then came the twist I did not see coming.

This event really made me acknowledge the perception and effect it had on the victims, which was quite heart-wrenching.

My heart broke for Micah and I was pleased to see how supportive Devlin was for Micah.
As for Micah’s parents – I have no words!

The heaviness of the storyline was lightened by Devlin's parents, and other side characters from Devlin’s side of the pond, adding much-needed humor towards the end.

Jacob Morgan and Joe Arden's narrating was awesome!

I wanted to read this book because Micah and Devlin were mentioned in His to Hold, part of the Quintessence world. I am so glad I did. Micah and Devlin overcome so much to find their forever after. This can be read as a stand-alone, although I highly recommend all the books in the Quintessence world and am hoping for more. My only regret is that I couldn’t buy a print copy, ebooks are nice but just not the same.

Wow this book took a twist, it was running along nicely, lots of sexual chemistry and then BAM.....everything changed. It dealt with the subject matter sensitively. Glad there was a happy ending. I want to say it wasn't steamy enough but the nature of events makes that no longer important and although not steamy it was still full of tenderness.

I had never read an MM romance before and i have to say if they are anything like The Intern... i shall be reading many many more!

Devon and Micah are too hot to handle. The sexy start is just the beginning and what a beginning it is. *fans self*

On a more serious note, Serena Akeroyd deals with complex characters in some difficult situations with the utmost care and sensitivity. I love the family dynamics, the way these two men who shouldn't really have anything to do with each other in a professional sense, find sanctuary in each other.

I love the way she weaves a story that challenges the readers unconscious biases and also makes a point that there is a life after assault.

It made me laugh - who knew a man who is so confident could be so awkward.
It made me cry - who knew that my heart could break and be put together with a few hundred words on a page.

I loved this book. I love Serena's Work and I am so pleased she hasn't let me down with such a different subject to what I'm used to!

For those who have read the Quintessence collection by Serena Akeroyd too, there is a cool little Easter egg in there that just made me laugh.

Such a great, hot and steamy book that I couldn't put down.

Also, love the different coming out stories in here that made me cry. Love the end of the afterword from Serena too! #Proud
