About the author

Mel Gough loves writing about love – but with a twist. Nominated for the 2019 Selfies Awards, her bisexual romantic suspense novel He is Mine is a typical Mel Gough story. She needs her HEA fix, but on the way there will be thorns and fire, and sometimes brimstone. All right, that might be over the top, especially since her stories are firmly based in the real world - though not always in the here and now.
Born in Germany, exploring other realities has been Mel’s siren call since she was young. Books opened up a plethora of worlds, and soon gave her a strong love of the English language. After an MA in Anthropology, field work in the middle of nowhere seemed like one adventure too far, so Mel settled in London, which, to misquote Dr. Johnson, she will never tire of.
Mel loves to bend genres – her romances are gritty and dark, and sometimes there’s a dead body. She’s been told that her prose is beautiful yet disturbingly real. She’s curious about bygone times, and hopes to speculate about the future in one of her next books.
She was once asked “How to tell you're in a Mel Gough novel”
- You were either sick or in an accident, or you’re caring for someone who was
- You're bisexual (or your partner is)
- Your partner has unusual eyes (probably grey)
- Life sucks a lot, but then you meet someone, and things get better

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2019Thistle Hearts Book #1
I have thoroughly enjoyed the few books of Gough's that I have read so far, because of their grit and look into the darker side of humanity without over embellishing the details to then becoming an action horror instead of action thriller novel.
Gough's attention to detail is always great in both character and world building. These and other attributes allow the reader to enjoy the book without getting bored or page after page of word fluff.
The Crime(s)...:
The Story itself is about a band going on tour after a decade and a half hiatus. The guys of Thistle Hearts are all still friends, they've just gone separate ways and done different things...til this current tour brought them all back together. Now everything has gone to blazes as the band's manager and one of their best friends, is found murdered. Duh-duh-duh...
Enter Special Agent, Carrie McDonald, who as fate would have it, is in the right place at the right or perhaps wrong time, depending on your pessimistic tendencies. The Detective in charge of the murder calls McDonald in to help him, since the Austin PD are short staffed. Feeling duty bound to help a colleague, she agrees.
Going Undercover(s):
So begins the investigation/ interrogation of the band members and staff of Thistle Hearts. Carrie, a seasoned agent finds herself undercover, which she says she is no good at, and she also finds herself under the covers, and in other positions (which she is apparently very good at) all while still investigating and interrogating folks.
There are red herrings tossed about, but rather than cast suspicion elsewhere they left me struggling to find cohesive parts...among the cast of characters, and the plot itself. I love twists and turns and I kept reading and believing this would all press out nicely - like ironing out a crumpled shirt.
Romantic Perspective:
I kept waiting for the romance as well, and the joining of each band member, perhaps with the exception of Corey, seemed forced and disjointed. I didn't buy the connection between Lou and Carrie, at all, and I struggled sensing any "realness" in Carrie's intimate moment with Jay.
The story is labeled LGBT, and the band members are each into each other, with Jay and Lou being a couple, and Corey sometimes being a third. There are no MM scenes, until 97% into the story (more in a moment). There are three distinct and explicit MF scenes between Carrie and each of the guys, without the others around.
At around the 96% mark the four are in bed, but paired up, Lou and Corey, who do not have intercourse, and Jay and Carrie who do. I didn't feel the intimacy in this scene either. **sigh...
The story ends with a nugget of understanding why the killer went to so much trouble with his terror spree regarding the band. There is however, no closure regarding the mystery behind it all. The reader is also left with a HFN regarding the band and their FBI agent.
**If you are NOT into MM/MMF on page you will be fine reading this. If you like your sMMexy times a bit more balanced or for them to lean more towards gay coupling on page, you will be disappointed.
**If the mystery/ thriller aspect is more your thing, this delivers great build up, but is quite anticlimactic, and leaves you wondering if you missed a vital part of the book somewhere.
Thistle Hearts (the book) and I lacked chemistry, so I do not believe I will continue their tour with them. As with all my reviews, these are just my thoughts and opinions. You should read the book to form your own.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Book Sirens in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019Special Agent Carrie McDonald, 36yo, single mother to Trixie a teenager who lives with Carrie’s mother since the FBI keeps her on assignment so much. Her latest was a bust, but not in a good way. The sting op ended badly. A local LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) whom she knows has requested her help in solving a recent murder in his district. It involves The Thistle Hearts band reunion tour and the death of their manager. What happens next with the band members: Jay, Corey and Lou is for her diary and not her daughter’s ears ;-)
The band members enjoy a polyamorous relationship. Quite often Corey connects with a female groupie as well. When Carrie gets wrapped up in their “harem,” things start getting interesting.
I don’t usually like reverse harem stories, but this was different from any I’ve tried to read before. My favorite genre is MMF, but this was close to perfect entertainment to me. Along with the relationships there is suspense (Who is the killer? Why?), angst (She might lose her job) and a thrilling ending. Is this just an HFN or an HEA??? I’d like to know more, Ms. Gough.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens and it comes highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2019This was disappointing. I love a good FBI thriller/mystery and I'm a huge fan of RH so this sounding like a perfect match. Unfortunately, it fell flat on so many levels. The mystery was never really solved. They caught the bad guy but we never got his reasons for doing it and his accomplices weren't brought in either. There's some talk about the possible murder of their old bandmate, but nothing is ever resolved there either. Carrie talks about an ex-husband but we never get the full story there. She's got a teenage daughter but she's barely mentioned and I forgot about her until the very end. I was just really disappointed in this. It had so much potential but in the end it felt like a waste of 2 hours since nothing was ever resolved. I doubt I'll read anything from this author again.

There is so much to this story!! Murder, steam, chemistry and a little thrill.
I was gripped from the start and needed to know what happened next. I love a good mystery and I liked that my every perception/expectation was mostly challenged. I still need to know why the person did what they did, so I'm really hoping that will be explained in the next book, but Mel's got me hooked.
I found the romance elements surprisingly organic. All the characters slept with each other, each had their own connections and were very open in their ideals of a relationship and I liked that it felt like a world were polyamory was mostly a norm, no questions asked. I liked this and found it freeing to read. I very much look forward to Jay & Lou, Jay & Connor, Connor, Lou & Jay - any sexy times between any of these sexy men would be hot and Mel liked to tease us with hints to the hotness of what these guys could get up to, but (sadly) not much happens on-page between the men it's more about their connection and desire for Carrie.
I liked Carrie. I felt she was strong, confident and relatable and while her storyline had predictable moments I really liked her approach to the band and her connection to each of the men was different. She was more than the no-nonsense FBI agent and while predictable I liked that she saw the case to its end.
There a quite a few things that were left unanswered and there were a few odd additions/characters/comments throughout the book but I'm invested and need more in this series and need my questions answered! A good overall story that's mostly resolved, but leaves you with a few lingering questions to keep you hooked for the next installment, well done Mel!
Thanks for reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
What a wonderful book! This is my first time reading this author, but I was in no way disappointed. I loved that the romance was part of the book, but not the whole book. Can't wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime and unusual romance......
This was a fast paced well plotted book with an interesting take on polyamory. The characters have a lot of room to grow after this first instalment - a modern take on crime and romance. Read it with an open mind and you won’t be disappointed. A very easy read that made my train journey whizz past.
