The Last Physicist: A Gamelit/Portal Fantasy Adventure (The Archon Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,558 ratings

Being a mage isn't all it's cracked up to be. Especially when you've witnessed the end of the world and the demise of all you've ever loved.
As a particle physicist, William Jenkins is as unsuited to survival on an alien world as any normal thirty-something post-doc could be. Thankfully, he's not alone. With an A.I., magic, scientific curiosity and most improbably, a deity on his side, Will must come to terms with his new reality before otherworldly terrors forever extinguish the light of hope on this new world.
Meanwhile, as the forces of darkness amass to invade her home, Effni Naridia, Qaseri Ranger and Guardian of her peoples, must face her own demons. By undertaking a trial, Effni could determine not only the fate of her city, but unravel a mystery aeons in the making.
The Last Physicist features elements of progression fantasy and Gamelit, and is perfect for those who enjoy stories by Andrew Rowe, Will Wight and Andy Weir.
Warning. This novel contains questionable quantum mechanics, general relativity and magic.
Note: this book also features profanity, vivid depictions of violence, pain and gore, along with depictions of mental health issues (including PTSD, generalised anxiety and depression) some readers may find distressing.

I, like most of you taking the time to read a LitRPG review on Amazon or Goodreads, read. A lot.

I rarely write a review. Things that bother other sophisticated readers rarely bother me. Any book I finish gets three stars. Why is that you may be asking? Well, if a book can hold my attention long enough for me to finish said book, it has to be a decent book. How people can finish a book that they plan to rate a one or two star, I will never understand. Life is short, there are millions of stories. Move on. Next.

A four start rating from me, (Who cares? I know.) means that the book not only held my attention but left me wanting more. Even if most of the time I can see the logical conclusion to the arc of the story. I want to verify it. I am hooked.

A five star is rare. It has everything the four star has but it also has one of two things. It has a premise I have not considered or remember coming across before or I have no clue how it will end.

This book has a little LitRPG, a little Wuxia and Xianxia with just enough hard science to really work.

My first instinct was to think that the MC got a little OP, a little to fast. I usually like a little more build up. I’m glad he did. I noted I thought there was a little Wuxia/Xianxia and it really is just enough. It was a nice montage scene, written in a way that I understand the process but didn’t have to spend all that time doing mental math.

I enjoyed the hard science, and by hard science, I mean terms and definitions that I just assumed to be factual. I’m reading a fantasy book, I am not reading a research paper in order to argue against the authors Thesis. Yet. :)

Great read. I cannot wait until the next book.

Let's be clear about what I meant in the headline. There are several elements in this book that make me hesitant to read the next one. The biggest one is that they indulged in a particular cultivation trope that I always hated when it inevitably popped up in 90% of every decent cultivation litrpg. Those familiar with this type of novel will probably know what I'm talking about, but it is one of the most annoying tropes in existence.

That set aside, this is a great litrpg for those who like over-powered main characters. Will quickly gets ridiculously overpowered relative to the world he is living in, and if this were written by a Japanese author I'd be whispering 'chuunibyou' over and over under my breath.

If you hate overpowered main characters, this might not be the best litrpg for you, but I need to note that while Will is overpowered, he has enough limits on that power and other advantages by the end that it is less troublesome than it might seem to enjoy.

Another weakness of this book is the way Will is never really given a real chance to come to terms with his own guilt, though he does regularly suffer from surges of guilt and panic attacks (just enough not to be annoying). A part of this is that, for much of the book, Will only has the AI Asterisk to converse with, meaning that his best friend is incapable of providing a good shoulder to cry on, though - to be fair - the AI does its best.

I'll be honest, early on I was looking forward to a book spanning eons. I love stories like that. However, the super-violence that dominates much of the last part of the book is fun in and of itself.

All-in-all, this book was a positive experience. It has its flaws, and I'll probably hesitate to read the next book. However, that doesn't take away from the enjoyment I gained along the way.

To be fair, most of the premise is total bollocks, and not at all how quantum works in our world, but also this isn't our world. The book does 2 very interesting things, minor spoilers for the first 1/8th of the book. First, it looks at why the world is a litrpg, the MC has an AI in his head using the game interface as just a way to help the MC keep track of his abilities and the world, it's a game because the MC asked for it. Second is look at the side effects and logical results of magic. Slowing time means you move faster, meaning you hit harder and are more durable because everything that hits you is going slower, plus if you slow time enough you catch fire because you are moving so fast you are hitting the particles in the air. Together the story feels more SciFi than magic despite the ridiculous premise.

From the summary, this sounded like it was going to be a fairly standard Isakai, maybe with some Warlock of the Magus World vibes, but that wasn't what this is at all. This story has a lot of depth and feels a lot more gritty. Also, the AI is a lot more than a mindless assistant to do all the "experiments" like in WotMW.

My only complaint is that using a "power of 2" leveling system for power results in absolutely crazy power growth. Something 4 levels above you has 16x your power so you have no chance against it, yet the protagonist manages to defeat things even when the level gap is much greater. Something like 10% more power per level would have been a lot more reasonable.

Overall I was pleasantly shocked and surprised at the depth and thought put into this book. Although, the fact that the protagonist was African American just seem like an excuse they have him get shot and not much else it was something a little different. As an African-American myself, I was left wondering why the writer made the character black. In any case I truly enjoy the inclusion of quantum physics and the standard model as a mechanism to explain Magic. I do feel that too much time was spent exploring the characters mental state but since it was a book how is able to skip over the boring bits. I am looking forward to how the story develops. I hope he can save the world, our world that is.

Extremely well thought out and written, original and minbendingly gripping.
Consider this: the dubious and repeated spelling choice of "practise" instead of "practice" and a single time-inconsistency in the narrated events are the only two "errors" that I noticed...in a story forged around a system of magic based on physics navigated by three-dimensional characters.

I don't tend to write a lot of reviews for books. Generally being too lazy to be honest.

I find that I feel that being this entertained for this long of a period is for as small a sum as charged leaves me feeling like I owe something to Dominic Stal (author).

Please bear with the story initially, it is slow for a little while but is laying some really good groundwork. Also people talk about the whiny main character. This character is completely believable to me as someone experienced with the difficulties those with a mental illness have to go through. He writes as though perhaps him or someone close has experienced this.

Highly recommended and I can't wait for the next one.

Yes there are a few spelling errors, no I did not report them as I did not find them disruptive to my enjoyment of what is truly an excellent story and hopefully the start of an epic arc of books.
