The Last Starr: Reverse Harem Paranormal Vampire Romance (Morrigan Starr Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 417 ratings

Morrigan thought she had nothing left to lose—until she met the heirs.

In a world where power is inherited through Blood Bonds, the royal heirs should have the freedom to choose their Starr. But the world is far from perfect, and Morrigan Starr is the last of her kind.

Raised for a darker purpose, Morrigan never expected to become a Bonded Starr. After four years of brutal preparation, she's sent to King’s College to make an impossible choice: bind her life to one of the seven royal heirs—or risk losing everything, including her very soul.

The heirs are nothing like she imagined—dangerous, alluring, and each with their own demands. Morrigan feels an irresistible pull toward all of them, but none more so than Valentin Stirling, the enigmatic and dangerously tempting Student Services Officer. But things at King’s College are not what they seem.

Caught between the scheming Chancellor Maxen King, the manipulative faculty, and the heirs’ own desperate desires, Morrigan is forced into the center of a deadly game of power and deception. With her life on the line, she must decide who to trust—before her choices are stripped away forever.

**Author Note: The Morrigan Starr series is designed for an older teen audience due to sexual content and darker themes that might disturb younger readers. This is a why choose romance, and the main character will add mates as the stories progress.

I have read heaps of book's in the past year but I honestly have to say this novel is one of the best yet.
I love paranormal of any description and vampire novels are a great favourite of mine but what happens often is, the storyline tend to be similar, giving us a slight variation but the basics are often the same.
Well "The Last Starr" certainly doesn't fit into that category, this vampire novel is absolutely superb, from the characters Ms Wallace has created to the presentation she has given us as we travel with Morrigan through her experiences and many of the things she's had to deal with, to the tongue in cheek crazy personality this fiesty young woman has as she keeps everyone she knows on their toes.
You never have to worry weather Morrigan will tell you what she thinks because one of her biggest attributes is she's a straight shooter and if you fall into the category of being someone she cares about, this tough tenacious young vampire will do everything in her power to love and protect you even to her own detriment.
The Morrigan bloodline is very important to the powerful kings and royalty within their nation, always trying to get their hands on anyone who is connected to the bloodline, because of what their blood can provide to the wielder, but after tragedy took all her family from her Morrigan finds herself to be the last surviving member of her family, and has to make some rather huge decisions regarding how she chooses to live her life.
If adventure mystery and heaps of action is what you enjoy within a novel, trust me when I say you will find yourself caught up with many of the different situations that Morrigan finds herself in, as she tries to manoeuvre the crazy situations she arrives in, honestly you almost feel as though this book is part of a huge paranormal detective mystery that require many pieces of the puzzle to be solved, so at times it's hard to keep track of the many different situations that occur while we are learning and understanding exactly what Morrigan had to go through to be able to come back into the community.
as she tries to continue doing what generations of her family had done before her, while keeping everyone happy.
Morrigan's arrival into the lives of many of the royalty and power-hungry vampire's, appears to cause a major upheaval, Morrigan had hoped her coming back into their lives would be a happy and positive transition, but she realises quickly that her arrival has not had the desired effect she had hoped for, and there are many vampire's who would have preferred if she had never returned.
This novel is full of characters who love the vacuum that's been created by the Starr families demise, so Morrigan's arrival definitely ruffles many vampire's who want to see instability within their world, hoping to use the unstable ruling parties to their own advantage.
Well Morrigan may only be in her late teens, but this tenacious young vampires will not stand back and allow them to step all over the young royals or their families.
This novel can be rather fast paced with so much happening at once that you find yourself actually trying to work out what could possibly be happening next, so you can understand why Morrigan makes some of the choices she does, especially when it comes to the heirs of the royal families and how deeply the emotional connections are between them all.
Without giving to much away Morrigan finds that even though she is surrounded by people who obviously love and care about her, she still feels very alone with no-one she can go to, to actually help her understand why she feels the way she does and why certain reactions keep happening to her that she cannot understand.
A brilliantly written novel with layer upon layer of action, suspense and non stop surprises as Morrigan tries to manoeuvre her way through this minefield of negativity and aggression she finds herself in the centre of.
If you enjoy paranormal with a difference then this novel will be one you cannot put down, it really is one book you should read, but be prepared to read a couple of follow up books because this will definitely be a series, one you're going to be waiting for the next book to arrive.

The bones of The Last Starr are excellent. I thought the idea for this vampire RH story was fresh and I flat-out loved the FMC, Morrigan. She's the last of her kind and in constant danger. Morrigan's experienced enormous trauma in her past, yet she's embraced who she is and what she wants to accomplish. Plus, she's moving forward with her sense of humor, ability to have fun, a strong sense of right and wrong, and a wealth of compassion all intact and affecting her decisions. There are secrets and mysteries involving the FMC and the world that we still don't know by the end of the book but are hinted at throughout.

This is a reverse harem with a large group of guys in play (I don't want to say how many because spoilers), yet none of the love interests blended together and there were opportunities for Morrigan to connect with each one in their own way. There are a mix of reactions to meeting the FMC, but there are no bullies here. I do feel like some of the love interests stand out a bit more due to page time with the FMC and hopefully the next book evens the connections out more. I really liked that the guys need to communicate with each other and they also are working out where boundaries need to be in order to make the dynamic work for everyone. This is a slow burn with no sex in book 1 but some steamy moments (including some telepathic ones). Some of the FMC's trauma involves sexual assault and the guys are learning not only what happened to her, but also how to support her.

There's no other woman drama and I hope there continues to be no ow drama in the future because I love how the guys only see/want her. There are some possible forced betrothals and prior bonding that are mentioned, but there's no interest in these other women from the guys and I anticipate these will be fought/resolved in future books. There's also no mm or any hints that there will be.

I also appreciated the pace and action of the plot. I never felt like the story was lagging and there's a lot happening throughout because of the danger of the FMC's life and the politics of the world.

Where The Last Starr faltered some at the time I read was editing and structure. World building is more learned on the fly, which isn't my favorite storytelling method. Some parts of the story are also repetitive and there are some plot inconsistencies here and there, as well as grammatical errors. I'm not sure if the author was able to use beta readers or an editor but both would elevate the book I think. Despite this, I was so invested in the FMC and her story.

This was a single POV story and with the number of love interests, I think this was a good call, plus the FMC's head is just a fun place to be. The book does end on a cliffhanger after something major occurred and I'm looking forward to book 2. I hope more readers give The Last Starr a chance.

The writing is not to my taste. Like someone else already pointed out the overuse of some words. What got to me was the use of Heir Whatshisname two paragraphs before then the use of their first name next. I literally had to go back a few times thinking Who!! There are four heirs then three more are introduced, so this going back and forth, continuously per chapter made me want to scream. Just pick one name for the character and stick to it.

The male characters all sounded the same to me 6ft 4 buff/built etc none stood out to me, except for maybe Sterling/Valentine. Also why name a chapter Sterling but it's still the heroines overview? Just another thing I found annoying, my brain automatically just kept thinking POV but no.

Too many things kept throwing me out of the book which is a shame because I quite liked the heroine, well except for calling that girl sweetheart from the get go, it was condescending.

Suffice to say I just thought enough of this, it's not Lord of the Rings epic where I've put more effort into trying to remember who's who.

On one hand, the concept and world interested me, the FMC had promise at times but seemed to flick between different personalities. The pacing was also odd, kind of stopping and starting with action, the whole book takes place in the span of a week or so maybe? So the relationship development was rushed in the sense of the world, but also not because of the amount of content in the book of that makes sense?

Definitely too many love interests, in RH as soon as you go above 4/5 it just becomes too hard to track, couple that with the fact that they'd refer to the same character by different names, swapping between first/last and nicknames it became confusing. Descriptions sometimes were so similar, everyone has sharp cheekbones and a square jaw. Also my god I got tired of the FMC same thought EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY FED.
