With a background in history and archaeology, Jennifer Ash should really be sitting in a dusty university library translating Medieval Latin criminal records, and writing research documents that hardly anyone would want to read. Instead, tucked away in the South West of England, Jennifer writes stories of medieval crime, steeped in mystery, with a side order of romance.

Influenced by a lifelong love of Robin Hood and medieval ballad literature, Jennifer has written "The Outlaw’s Ransom" - a mini novel which first saw the light of day within the novel "Romancing Robin Hood" (written under the name, Jenny Kane) Its sequels "The Winter Outlaw", "Edward's Outlaw" and "Outlaw Justice," continue the medieval murder mystery series.

English Enchantment in The Outlaw's Ransom

English Enchantment in The Outlaw's Ransom
The Outlaw’s Ransom by Jennifer Ash is the first in a series of books written under the Folville Chronicles umbrella and it doesn't disappoint. This hot, galloping tale follows the travails of young Mathilda, daughter of a local potter who lives in the English countryside, as she is yanked from a loving family and thrown to a clan of thieves and so-called villains to ensure her father pays off his debts. But are the Folvilles all that bad? Mathilda’s a bright young girl, in some ways too bright for her own britches– a quality that causes some consternation, but also proves attractive to the Folville family – especially to the handsome Robert Folville. This is a family well known for living by the code of Robyn Hode (Robin Hood to most of us) and Mathilda believes she can find a way to free both herself and her father's debts by helping the honorable family of tough guys. Ash, whose background is in history and archaeology, has a lifelong passion for Robin Hood mythology. This devotion is clear when you read her charming tale of betrayal, family angst, and young love.  In The Outlaw’s Ransom, Mathilda is a pawn who becomes smarter and wiser by the day in order to stay alive. Fans of Robin Hood in all his various incarnations, whether the adventures with his Merry Men or as a sly animated fox with a red feather in his cap, will enjoy this fresh take on the legend and how it affected real-life families living in Medieval England. It’s also a timely read thanks to the updated Lionsgate film set to hit U.S. theaters this November.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun

Jennifer Ash's background as a medieval historical scholar is put to great use here in her new spin on the Robin Hood story. Convincing historical detail, a bit of excitement, a bit of romance and a feisty heroine who (unlike so many others) remains credible in her historical context.
    Loved it.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit simplistic and flat.

I was quite disappointed in this book. As I’m interested in the Folville brothers and enjoy historical novels, I was looking forward to a good read. Probably because I’m used to reading books by Philippa Gregory or Alison Weir, who are both highly talented writers and historians, my expectations may have been too high. I found the author’s writing style a bit simplistic and flat by comparison. Both Weir and Gregory are extremely adept at bringing their characters to life and manage to really transport you back in time as they are very skilful in their use of historical detail. Unfortunately, in both respects, I found this book sadly lacking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!

What a lovely way to spend Easter Sunday, curled up under my blanket and being whisked back in time. Mathilda is a woman who isn't afraid to say what she thinks and reveals a truth about a mystery, knowing it may cost her dearly. I truly felt as though I was at the market with her and also felt the soreness from being on a horse. A really good tale with a happy ending. Historic books are ones I love to read and I was so glad I picked this up!

I was utterly enthralled by this fabulous book. Meticulous historical detail given to the reader with a beautifully light touch. The romance is heart stopping, the action compelling. Fabulous!

I sort of liked it, different from the genre that I normally read so for that very interesting plot and some of the characters I liked a lot but it was the style of writing in some chapters I found a bit irritating
