About the authors
Ki grew up in small town nowhere complaining loudly to anyone who would listen about the never-ending boredom, but among all that solitude was time to write, daily bonfires, and an endless stretch of sky to ripen an overactive imagination. Now, living in Erie, Pennsylvania, Ki enjoys the sandy beaches and appreciates those quiet times a lot more. Ki is a beach bum during the summer, takes on more projects than are strictly healthy, and spends as much time as possible with family.
Meg Bawden was born and raised in North Queensland, Australia. She's loved stories since before she can remember and has always enjoyed creating characters of her own, even if it did begin with drawing faces on toilet rolls and giving them names. Writing has always been a passion of hers and she's loved the M/M genre since 2004, the first book she read being Rainbow Boys by Alex Sanchez.
Writing M/M since 2007, Meg has never had the confidence to attempt publishing her own stories, but in 2015, she decided that it was all about to change thanks to the amazing friends she's made in the M/M genre and their support and encouragement. So watch out, world, Meg Bawden is coming out to have some fun!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2021This was a fantastic story about love, loss, grief, disappointments, learning from mistakes, how to live with situations that most people find socially unacceptable, and so much more. Everyone should be able to live life without the constant judgment of others, be who they truly are instead of having to pretend for appearance sake. I love that this story shows that love, strength, and support can help anyone be who they want and were meant to be.
I'm not personally involved in the LGBTQ community, however I have lots of friends and family who are, and I support all of them, as well as the community as a whole.
I would definitely recommend this book, and outstanding authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020This isn't my favorite trope to read and I usually have to be in the mood to read role play books, especially daddy kink. But do love a good angsty book and this one sounded like it fit the bill.I didn't feel like this one was too over the top though with the daddy/boy dynamic and it was more used as a comfort thing for both characters. Carter died from cancer leaving the two people he loved the most behind, his boyfriend wes and younger brother Shane. Shane had a hard time coping with his brother's death and was slowly withering away and only Wes can help pull him out of it. By bringing comfort and creating a safe place for shane, he was also bringing these things to himself. They were both what eachother needed to help get them through their grief and loneliness but Shane couldn't help but still be stricken by guilt of taking comfort in the bed of that his new lover once shared with his no deceased brother. They were both at war with themselves on what was the right and wrong thing to do but had a hard time keeping away from eachother and struggled more being apart than when they were together. This was a touching and emotional read. I felt like the story and characters were both well written. At first I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this kind of story with it being so soon after his brother's death but I feel like the story was well done with super believable characters. We all grieve in our own way and that is exactly what these two characters did and they were able to that together instead of alone.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2024A very moving story. I have friends who were thrown away by their parents because of their sexual orientation or gender identification. Should never happen.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2022This book was amazing but it made me cry so much! It was obvious that the characters belonged together and the story made my heart ache in the best way! Another amazing work of art.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2020I loved reading The Promise by Ki Brightly and Meg Bawden. I couldn't stop reading it. It made me laugh and cry. I loved Carter, Shane, and West. I read this book using the Kindle Unlimited program.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2020My new favorite couple - West and Shane definitely have a sizzling chemistry! Wished I could have given it a higher rating because I loved this book! Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021I’m reviewing the audio edition. This story about grief and moving on is heartbreaking. After the loss of Carter both West and Shane are struggling to find a after. West has the responsibility to watch over Shane but it’s hard when there is an attraction. Shane is just almost lost. He is trying to deal on a daily basis but not so successfully. There are so many issues to this relationship and its development. How these two handle them drew me in. I enjoyed the story. What I felt just didn’t fit is the narration. The voice of West just seems too juvenile.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024I wanted to love this, I really did, but about halfway through, West treats Shane horribly. Horribly. It took me out of the book immediately and I almost DNF.
I did finish it and the ending was good, but gosh, I can’t get over how awful he was.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
I love a daddy/boy story and was excited to give this a go. With its slightly unique plot and authors unknown to me it was a bit of a gamble but overall it paid off. Shane and West were likeable main character's and i felt for them both after their loss of Carter . I didn't really follow the underage drinking thing at first because i'm from the UK but once my brain switched on that all made sense. The constant mentioning of the motorcycle club made it obvious that was a connecting series and grew a bit annoying but i'm sure readers of that series enjoyed seeing past characters.
For me while the daddy/boy parts of this book were good they weren't great. Also the jump between scenes and chapters was sometimes disjointed and confusing enough that I had to backtrack a few pages, that doesnt make for easy flow of reading. Overall though not a bad read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet
Bittersweet story about West and Shane, who have lost Carter, Shanes big brother/best friend and West's partner. When they explore their newfound attraction to another, their lives begin to get better. My first book written by these authors but surely not my last. Such sweet characters.
