The Puck Drop (Central State) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 1,809 ratings

Falling for the coach's daughter was never part of the plan...

Michael Reiner has the new start he’s been craving, where no one knows about his past and he can finally figure out what he wants out of life. Because one thing’s for certain—he can’t play hockey anymore, and life without hockey seems daunting. But when he gets the chance to intern under the Central State Hockey coach, he couldn’t be happier. Until he finds out the mysterious hottie he met at the bar is the Coach’s daughter.

Naomi Fletcher-Simpson has always been the weird twin. She prefers spreadsheets and trivia nights while her popular sister is everyone’s favorite. Things have been tense in her family, so when she gets a chance to pair up with the hockey team for a huge stats project, she takes it. She can repair her relationship with her dad
and hopefully score her dream internship in the process.

Neither Michael nor Naomi expected to like each other. Complete opposites in every way, they slowly form a deep friendship that makes their chemistry sizzle, and friends with benefits is the only option to deal with their growing attraction. Michael can’t afford to lose the internship, and Naomi can’t afford to lose her heart to a hockey guy.

For the guy who’s suffered enough loss, and the girl who’s
always left behind, they can’t risk falling in love—not when they both know all things come to an end, right?

Ooh, but how I loved these two main characters! The chemistry was there, and I enjoyed seeing them forge a friendship that had that delicious underlying thrum of awareness and attraction sizzling between them. They also had rich back stories, and I easily empathized with Michael and understood where Naomi was coming from. I appreciated the conflict they had to face, and that it wasn't the usual sort of resolution, which I'm always up for, especially when done well. The family story line for both MCs was also rather moving. There were a number of notable supporting characters whose own stories I'm excited to dive into as the Central State series progresses. 4.5 stars for The Puck Drop.

You know what I am trash for? Sports romances and slightly broken characters. Well, this book had both those things, and I had a great time seeing these two get their HEA.

Since his parents’ deaths, Michael kept people at arm’s length. He preferred to say detached rather than suffer once he lost them. Naomi was dealing with abandonment issues. Her mother left, and her sister and father emotionally abandoned her. Thus, it was difficult for her to form attachments. Yet, Naomi and Michael saw something in each other that signaled them to let down their defenses and trust their hearts to each other.

I made it sound all easy there, but it wasn’t. However, it was wonderful to watch their relationship slowly take root and flourish. There were some steps, forwards and backwards, while they worked through their issues, but it just made the payoff more meaningful. The repairing and building of those side relationships was great too. I appreciated how the characters had to dig deep and the growth they experienced.

Overall: A fun romance which was an emotional journey for both characters.

The Puck Drop was a great hockey romance. It’s a friends to lovers/ friends with benefits.
Michael was a lovely hero who despite dealing with a loss he’s still strong and trying to move on. Focusing on what he enjoys most. Hockey. I liked the friendship he had with his sister and her boyfriend.
Naomi is the less cooler twin when it comes to her sister Cami who’s the opposite. I actually enjoyed Naomi and her nerdy side. Her girlfriends were terrific.
The friendship between Naomi and Michael was great. They slowly grow closer and there’s an attraction.
So it was all just great and it’s because I felt there wasn’t anything new to the story or the characters. Been there done that I’m afraid.

Honestly, I’m oddly unsure how I feel about this, sure it had some cute and/or spicy moments, which is a definite plus, but there were also a couple of moments where I wanted to bang my head on the wall and not always in a cute way… if that even makes sense.

It was not anything really with the story itself, just specific moment of oddity where a phrase or something just hit me in the wrong nerve.

All in all, pretty great, it’s a me thing, totally worth the read.

I feel like some moments moved at a snails pace and then the ending was like everything happening all at once. With that being said, I still really enjoyed this book. The characters were so lovable and there was no nonsense, which was great. I feel like it was missing the typical coaches-daughter pieces but that’s what made it so refreshing to read. It wasn’t like a book you’ve read a million times. The ending wasn’t what I was expecting but I feel like it just suited them perfectly

I do love the forbidden aspect of the coach’s daughter trope. I just think there was some stuff about Naomi I could do without. She was slightly infuriating. She was so not like other girls because she liked numbers and data. She can be hot and a nerd. We exist. Girl groveling? No thank you. Girl obsessed? No thank you. It was just a bunch of small things, like details of locations or events happening that were contradictory and take you out of the story that made it less enjoyable for me. I also didn’t like that both Naomi and Michael downplayed her fears about moving from friends to FWB to relationship, especially after he is promoted. Like didn’t he literally forget to check in with her for hours and then rain check/canceled on her? But she’s supposed to feel sorry when his first actions literally enforced her worst fears? Besides that I liked their relationship and the trust they built. How he helped her be bold, confident, and honest while she helped him be vulnerable.

What a beautiful couple. The story was ADROABLE! The banter made me smile and laugh out loud. I loved them and her hurt eith her dad was relatable. Really fantastic. Only gave it a 4 out of 5 because it was nothing earth shattering. But I laughed and even cried at parts. I love Micheals honesty and personality. What a wonderful book boyfriend 😍🥰

The male lead was great, but personally, the FMC's groveling was not satisfactory.
She hurt him, and there should have been more groveling instead of taking a cowardly way out.
IMO, she didn't confront her dad bcuz of MMC, but because she needed to do something about the relationship for herself.
It felt like she was not giving as much as MMC in the relationship.
PS. This is my personal preference, where I enjoy more balanced emotional investment from both leads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect story with angst & love
Reviewed in Germany on January 13, 2022
This was the second book I read from this author and I simply loved it.
It's sort of a spinoff from the Moo U series and the book "Holdout", where Michael is Ryann's brother. He makes a very strong appearance there too and it's one of the reason Ryann and Jonah are struggling in their relationship. I loved him there and here as well.
There was a lot of angst, bad timing, miscommunication and both characters struggled with heavy emotional baggage. But their chemistry was always there from the beginning. The side characters are also well developed.
Both Michael and Naomi grew and faced their demons - I would prefer if Michael came forward to his coach and not Naomi but in the bigger picture everything worked out fine.
    cant wait for Cami's story!!

    The Puck Drop
    My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5

So my introduction into the world of sports romance was through the Moo U series… where Jaqueline Snowe collaborated on one of the books. I loved her writing then and I love the continuation and recreation of the characters here.

Michael is this super considerate, compassionate and caring character who deeply cares for Naomi. I love their friendship and how they truly connected on a deeper level before it grows. Their forced proximity helps bring them together and builds trust between them that pushes their relationship and it really highlights and sparkles. 💕 I love how Naomi is this numbers nerd who’s so far outside the realm of hockey and sports, while yes it’s because of history and resentment but her desire and passion for statistics and looking at numbers was a cool way to think about sports and how this can correlate.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to seeing how the others in the series fall together. 🔥
