Lords of the Ruins (The Range Book #2): LitRPG Series Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 179 ratings

The next book of the series! The Guardian of the Verge (The Range Book #3): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0946Y26J3

Altai managed to survive in Limbo and get a coveted pass to the Green Zone, but this is only the beginning of his journey. Thanks to the “Hand of Justice” achievement, the former planetary assault trooper saw a faint glimmer of hope that one day he’ll escape Rhapsody. One day, maybe, if he’s lucky...

Now is not the time, though. After all, a visit to Elysium is just a short respite before a new race with death begins. At the Verge, the Orange Zone of the Range, all achievements received in Limbo mean nothing. The rules change as the game progresses and the most important one, as usual, is written in small print.

The only way to survive is to become stronger, faster and smarter than your opponents but that’s not easy. You’ll have to shed blood for credits and virtual experience that allow you to buy weapons and power-ups. Hopefully, this will be the blood of your enemies and not your own.

Review

★★★★★ Dave - Some serious fights against unknown biomorphic creatures is the main driver in this book. Initially Altai, Diss & Margot escape from Limbo yo Elysium, but run afoul of another prisoner, Sly, and his drug dealing ways. Quickly leaving Elysium, they are targeted and eventually arrive at the Thunderbirds fort. Fate throws them to the wind here and Altai must accept becoming a clan member to keep his fellow team members safe. Heading out to level up with another squad, Altai and co encounter bio morphs and enemy clans, leading to a massive fight, with a twist at the end.

★★★★★
Kindle Customer - I can't believe you stopped at that time! I am so mad and the same time in awe, it's making me crazy! It's awesome! Love the plot lines! Keep up with the great work! Thank you very much for the book! Can't wait for the next one!

★★★★★
Jon Svenson - I'm giving this book 5/5* as the action is tense and kept me turning the pages quickly. I wished Margot, Diss and all the rest of the original team had been there instead of Altai going with a new team, but it does provide a good setup for book 3, especially since a previous character had been in the same situation as Altai now finds himself.

★★★★☆
Kindle Customer - I've never read a book from the perspective of someones inner dialogue. I didn't love the story as a while. Too much action not enough story but it has its merits and is worth a read I'd say!

★★★☆☆
Travis Siegel - The main character encounters typical situations, (you know, murder, betrayal, friendship, teamwork, being pressed into service), the typical range occupations, but our main character also manages to turn them all to his advantage. Well, ... at least until the end, which I have to say I didn't see coming, though perhaps I should have.If you read and liked the first book in this series, you'll certainly want to add this one to your reading list, especially since it looks like the next book in the series is going to be pretty intense.

Yury Ulengov was born in 1986. Ever since he got a taste for reading at 4 years of age, it remained his favorite pastime which neither movies, nor TV series or even video games could surpass. When he was six, Yury laid his hands on his first science fiction novel, which was Deathworld by Harry Harrison and which decided his literary preferences and future vocation once and for all.

Unlike many authors of today whose road to publication lay through online literary portals, Yury’s manuscripts were immediately accepted for publication. His debut trilogy based on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game was praised by the publisher as "one of the most memorable releases in the series’ entire history". As of today, Yury has won four major literary prizes and authored twelve novels and several short stories.

Good techno-filled and action-packed book, better than its predessors, cos you know, its full of bio-, cyber- and wartech and every bit of it is in used in every second (or page).

Book 1 of this series came out of nowhere, as we followed Altai, formerly of the military, enter the range, where he is placed in limbo and forced to fight it out with other criminals. In that book he takes down a manufacturer of A-stim, a drug enhancement that makes people stronger, feel less pain (or no pain), and makes life on the range bearable.

After surviving limbo in book 1, he is promoted to the green zone, where the team quickly realizes just how underpowered they are against everyone else. They don't have enough credits, or enough time, to avoid groups that haven't taken kindly to his actions in limbo.

Which translates into: Altai and his team are being hunted. It's only a matter of time.

The team makes some contacts in the green zone and manage to escape mostly unnoticed as they enter the verge, where remnants of war against the xenos still live and thrive. They run into one of these units early on, barely getting away with their lives.

After that things take a strange turn. The team of Diss and everyone else is left behind as Altai has to go out and get power leveled. There they find a xenos lair, with the previously unknown xenos type trying to kill them.

Again, it's just a matter of time.

I'm giving this book 5/5* as the action is tense and kept me turning the pages quickly. I wished Margot, Diss and all the rest of the original team had been there instead of Altai going with a new team, but it does provide a good setup for book 3, especially since a previous character had been in the same situation as Altai now finds himself.

The notifications are regular but mostly focus on AI updates and information. There is leveling, quite a bit actually, but that is overshadowed by the story.

All in all, a great second book in this series. Recommended.

This one didn't seem as good as the first. And the MC seemed very undecided and bad at taking charge and such. He just seemed like a follower and not a leader. Oh well.
