The Thing About Tilly Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 557 ratings

Two best friends. Buried feelings. A secret holding them apart.

Two friends since university, each holding something back.
Tilly’s been running from her secrets for far too long. Evie, carrying a buried flame for Tilly since they met, has always been there to welcome Tilly back with open arms. That is, after all, what one does for a friend.
When Evie unexpectedly falls pregnant, she’s left with a lot of hard decisions to make. That includes choices about Tilly and the way she's been disappearing on her randomly for over a decade.
Tilly wants nothing more than to be there for Evie, who's been her anchor to return to time and time again. But what does supporting her look like when sticking around becomes an important part of that?
A romance about growing up—whatever that means—and realising that even if it hurts, sometimes change is for the best.

G Benson has well and truly put her heart and soul into this one. Rach, Les Rȇveur

It’s exquisite to read. There are long, vivid sentences that sweep and loop and cradle your heart all the way to a full stop, and then two words, perhaps one, grab hold and clutch at your imagination. KJ, Author

Benson spent her childhood wrapped up in any book she could get her hands on and—as her mother likes to tell people at parties—even found a way to read in the shower. Thankfully moving on from writing bad poetry in her teens, she started to write stories about anything and everything. Tearing her from her laptop is a fairly difficult feat, though if you come bearing coffee you have a good chance.

Originally from Australia, she currently lives in Spain, speaking terrible Spanish and going on as many trips to new places as she can, budget permitting. This means she mostly walks around the city she lives in.

I was totally drawn into this story of love, friendship and secrets by G Benson's brilliant use of words. Right away I was living in the lives of Evie, Tilly and Sean. Three friends from college who shared a true love for each other. Acceptance is the key here. Tillie often just left with no explanation of why. Her friends grew over the years to just accept her absences. As the story unfolds I was able to understand each of the characters in an intimate way. This is a remarkable story of two women who really can't function properly without the other. Sean is more of an anchor for them both. When Evie has to face some difficult choices, she relies on her friends. She is open about her feelings. Sean is open about wanting the best for his friends. Tilly is not open about anything. This is such an outstanding book and it left me happy. This is, in my opinion, one of the best books of the year and I totally recommend it. It will make you smile and give your heart goosebumps. I absolutely loved everything about it. Many, many thanks to you, G Benson, for gifting us with such a beautiful book!!!!!

Told from three characters' points of view, this novel delves into their group as best friends while they navigate their and each other's lives. It's a mix of devotion, struggles, some laughs, and secrets. This was a really good book that dealt with realistic issues, had diverse characters, and full acceptance by friends and family.

Wow! This book is more of a very eloquently written journey. A story of personal growth and compassion. Compassion for others and learning to have compassion and forgiveness for yourself. Tbh, I finished reading this book last week and find it hard to put into words exactly how I feel about it. The many pressing topics made my heart bleed for Tilly, for many reasons. The first half of the book lays out a picture of Tilly from the perspective of her friends. The second half of the book shifts more towards the truth in that erroneous perspective that makes Tilly seem like a flaky person. What I like is although her friends don’t prefer this personality trait, they are accepting of the friend they know. No ill-will towards her, but complete respect and acceptance. Not that it doesn’t come at a price. But that is the beauty in truths unfolding and perspective shifts. The characters are multidimensional, supportive and caring, diverse, and all very likable. The writing is beautiful, eloquent, and pairs very well with the angsty love story that unfolds from these lovely pages. This story is a slow burn romance and also encompasses the different loves we have for lovers, friends, and family...and what “family” can mean. If you are looking for a story about personal growth, deep love between two souls who belong together, and a family journey (on multi-levels)...written as eloquently as imaginable. Then this is your read. I dare you to read it and tell me you didn’t add it to your list of top reads.

I just finished reading this book, and I had to take my contacts out because I couldn't stop crying. My wife checked on me multiple times to make sure I wasn't having a breakdown. My anxious dog hasn't left my side. My point being, this book will wreck you. In the best ways. I love Evie and Tilly and their real and found families. I love the reminders to be kind to ourselves and forgive our mistakes. And the reminder to empathize with others, and do our best to be kind to them as well. This book was just really great. You should read it.

Wasn’t my cup of tea. The pace of the book was too slow for my liking. I just didn’t connect with the characters, I found them to be frustrating and emotionally immature. I gave three stars because the story line was good and some other personality types might connect better with the characters.

I think the writing of this story must have. felt tricky. So many components causing angst and chaos. Ms. Benson made it warm and special.

There was almost a poetry to the writing in this book, but in a way that really pulled me in right away. It was like that feeling you get when you view a peice of art, or walk into a well decorated room, that you instantly love. The story felt immensely good to read, and i want it in print. I wanna read this book on my porch on autumn nights, or on a beach on vacation, or curled up with a hot drink in my favorite armchair in winter. I'll probably do all of those things. I love finding books i know I'll read again and again. This is definitely one of them.
Also, the diverse representation in this book was excellent, and i loved that it was a story about queer people without trans/homophobia as an antagonist. Just a solid romance with people having to overcome their own issues, and supporting each other through it.

The Thing About Tilly is certainly different from the previous books by G Benson that I read. Not in a bad way, by any means. It's a beautifully written story about love, and friendship, and most of all about family. It's just so heartwarming to read a book about different kind of families, all of them a little messy and working hard to BE a family because they love each other and it's worth it.

I have to say I cried A LOT while reading this book, I wasn't prepared for it at all but the feelings between Tilly and Evie run so deep from the start that it was impossible to be unmoved by the ups and downs of their relationship.

That said I had one issue with the book. The way Evie's dad plot was resolved didn't sit that well with me. Without going into spoilers and details, it's a pet peeve of mine when storylines like that end the way this one did. And I think it particularly didn't fit in a story so focused on what actually makes a parent and how little it has to do with biology.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Emotions 101
Reviewed in Australia on April 10, 2024
Talk about emotive! Character-driven and a journey through the entire sliding scale of emotions from mega happy to harrowingly sad, with so many stops along the way.

We all carry burdens through life, pick them up, sometimes put them down, let those burdens colour our lives, or not. And we all carry them differently at different times in our lives. The wonderful group of characters in this book cover the whole spectrum. Add to that the fact the characters are so real, so living-and-breathing, and you laugh and cry with them.

This was such an emotional read for me I had to pause occasionally and make myself a soothing warm beverage. G Benson is top-notch at ripping your heart out (figuratively speaking of course, with a dose of poetic licence), slapping that heart from pillar to post, and then gently setting it back in place at the end. HEA (sigh).

Another wonderful, heart achingly, beautiful story from an amazing author. I was sucked in to the story from the 1st chapter and it refused to left me go. And the feels! It's going to take a long time before I ever start to forget this one. Well done!
