The Wrong Bachelor: An Enemies-to-Lovers YA Romantic Comedy (The Wrong Match Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 4,578 ratings

A feel-good high school rom-com bound to make you laugh, cry, swoon and fall in love all at the same time! Madi and Cole's heart-warming enemies-to-lovers story is perfect for fans of Jenny Han, Kasie West and Lynn Painter.

Bachelor: A desirable potential boyfriend. AKA not Cole Kingston.

Seventeen-year-old Madison (Madi) Matthews wants nothing to do with the dating competition her school is holding to raise money for charity. She's never been interested in chasing a guy before, and she certainly isn't interested in competing for one in front of the whole school.

But, when Madi is voted as one of the ten "lucky" contestants, she's given no choice but to vie for the heart of Lincoln High's most eligible bachelor. The problem is, they've chosen the wrong guy.

Cole Kingston might be good looking, great with a football and practically the king of Lincoln High, but he's also cocky, arrogant, a serial flirt and Madi's sworn enemy.

Will she be able to resist him though when the competition heats up and he turns his charms on her?

The Wrong Bachelor is perfect for readers looking for:

  • A feel-good rom-com
  • Swoon-worthy kisses and big romantic gestures
  • Clean romance with a happy ending

This book was flipping adorable
Oh.My.Gosh. This book was flipping adorable. I honestly almost skipped over it when it popped up on my recommended page, but I'm glad I didn't! I almost forgot how enjoyable a good YA clean romance could be to read. I even stayed up until 1:30 in the morning because I wanted to keep reading it. Madi and Cole were just perfect together. There were some cheesy parts, but I forgive it because the author even points out that they are cheesy. The writing is top-notch and I believed all the interactions. Sure, the hot list gave me some mad flashes of 13 Reasons Why, but I was a HS student once, and yes, things like that happened. My only complaint was that it wasn't longer. After all that waiting we only got a slight flash of them together as a couple. This will definitely be added to my reread pile. And Alexandra Moody is on my watch list for sure.

For the most part this was a really enjoyable read. I liked the drama the plot brought forth and I enjoyed the relationship developing between the two main characters. The plot in itself however seemed a bit unrealistic in the sense that I do not see any actual school agreeing to the concept of forcing students into a dating competition and then streaming it online for anyone to see and judge. Maybe if the participants themselves choose take be part in the competition, but to be voted in and kinda be blackmailed with a charity cause into staying in the competition seems like a big legal, student health and image risk that I can’t see any school actually taking. Considering this is a YA book the plot isn’t so out there that it ruined the whole reading experience, but it certainly felt off enough that I had to point it out, especially since there didn’t seem to be any authority figures stepping in when the main character was bullied, nor when the competition went too far out of control.

As can be excepted the story hade a happy ending that I really liked, but at the same time it did feel kind of rushed with the antagonist and ex just letting bygones be bygones and cheering the couple on. The way the story built up I was kinda expecting and hoping for a more satisfying ending where the antagonist and ex were put in their place, as well as the viewer hungry showrunner being handed some consequences for his actions. Overall though, as a romance fan I can’t help but be really happy with the ending.

This book is so fun! It is really well written and the characters are all so charismatic. It touches on some more serious aspects of high school drama in an appropriate tone for the type of fun read it is (it addresses some of the way young adults can be cruel to each other). I read the second book in this series first accidentally, but that didn’t keep me from really loving the entire book! I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a lighthearted, sweet book that appropriately addresses some of the not so easy parts of being a teenager.

I always love a good feel good, love/ hate story and this one did not disappoint. From the moment I started reading, I was intrigued as to how everything would turn out. First in the case of Madi’s boyfriend all the way down to the competition. To which, I must point out had all the “Bachelor” cliches—and I didn’t hate it. That is something coming from someone who doesn’t care for the show. Cole was sweet and I instantly liked him and I couldn’t understand how Madi didn’t see, like everyone else, that he was totally into her! If you want a book that makes you feel light and fluffy afterward, this is the book for you. I give it 5 stars because it did not disappoint, it was well written, and I connected with the characters. The only flaw I had was the cliche’s of the bachelor, but of course then it wouldn’t be a book based off the show if the cliche’s were not there. It is the few times that cliches work well and you can’t help but love it.

I loved Alexandra Moody's ARC series, so I jumped at the chance to read this new book of hers. I have a weak spot for YA romances with some kind of twist, and a high school version of The Bachelor really tickled my fancy.

My greatest criticism of The Wrong Bachelor is that it was kind of predictable, but that's romance for you. Still, I love a good enemies-to-lovers trope. The concept of a high school charity dating show was also quite cool, though I'm not entirely sure how the idea got approved by the school board.

The main characters -- popular, beautiful Madi and popular, handsome Cole -- seemed a little bland to me at first. Madi's only character traits were that she was nice and pretty, while Cole himself was kind of a douche. I had a hard time working out how Madi could ever fall for him when he seemed to take pleasure in making her angry, and I feared that the inevitable ending wouldn't be believable. In the end, however, Cole turned out to be really sweet, though I'm not quite sure when or why that shift happened. Nevertheless, it was nice to see that character development.

A much more interesting character for me was Angus, the showrunner who would stop at nothing to amp up the drama. It was fascinating to see just how far he would go to get more votes and views, and his actions raised some really interesting questions about just how ethical reality shows like this are. I also loved how Angus's choices and the hype around the show caused some serious problems for Madi. (What can I say? I'm a sucker for drama.)

Overall, The Wrong Bachelor is a fun and enjoyable read. It's one of those books that you can devour in just a few sittings for some nice light escapism. Even though it's obvious how things will end up, the joy is in the journey, not the destination.
