The Wrong Side of Murder (Curtis Westcott Crime Thrillers Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 213 ratings

Taut, intense, and intriguing. The crisp dialogue and quick pace will snag readers and keep them hooked. Buick does it again in this gritty, atmospheric cold case mystery.”
Steven James, bestselling author of Every Wicked Man

Prom night and Darina was having a great time – until someone killed her and stuffed her body in a wall.

Now, twenty years later, Boston homicide detective Aislinn Byrne is staring at her friend’s dehydrated body, draped over a chunk of broken drywall. For two decades Aislinn wondered what happened to Darina – how and why she disappeared without a trace. Aislinn works the case hard, but it’s a convoluted path to the truth. Darina’s father, Alexi, was running organized crime rackets and was murdered six months before she went missing. The obvious question boils up to the surface – are the two murders connected – and if so, how?

Curtis Westcott, head of Boston Homicide, reopens Alexi’s unsolved murder and that puts him head-to-head with a trifecta of powerful gangsters. It’s a wall of silence, but Westcott gradually begins to peel back the layers. As he and Aislinn share information and both investigations move ahead, one thing becomes clear – the killer is still out there and watching their every move.

Want some authentic crime fiction novels – look no further.

Award-winning author Jeff Buick writes fast paced fiction filled with twists you won’t see coming. Lethal people (the bad guys of course) lurk in Jeff’s Boston crime series, but Curtis Westcott and his team of detectives are ready for any murder mystery that comes at them.

The Westcott series is action packed suspense, perfect for readers who love Michael Connelly books, especially the Bosch series. 'A Killing Game', the first in the series, won the 2021 International Thriller Writers “Best original ebook”, and is a “can’t put it down” suspense thriller. And new for 2024, 'The Vulture Fund', the 3rd in the series is a finalist for the 2024 ITW award.

Then there’s the Bobby Greco series, where a disgraced Orlando Homicide cop tackles a very twisted bad guy in the series opener, 'One is Evil'.

Jeff’s latest standalone novel, 'The Krubera Conspiracy', rifles along at a face pace and is a globe-trotting mix of thriller and suspense.

Coming soon - 'The Reluctant Truth' - a multigenerational drama that in 2024 pits two men in a battle for something their ancestors fought over in the final days of World War II.

Jeff is a Canadian author who loves to read and is always searching for a remarkable new novel, especially book club novels. He devours Tana French books, along with new offerings from Louise Penny and Mary Stone.

About 18 months or so ago I read the first Curtis Westcott story and absolutely loved it. As I recall, I said that Jeff Buick had set the bar quite high for whatever came next in the series. Then I waited to see what that would be. As it turns out, good things come to those who wait because The Wrong Side of Murder is a thoroughly gripping story with terrific characters.
Curtis is almost, but not quite, a secondary character here. Detective Aislinn Byrne is at the forefront of the story, and she has a bit of a personal stake in the case. I really liked Aislinn. She's tough and works hard to keep her emotions from showing, but she has a good heart. Curtis does have a related case to work on and it takes him to some colorful characters. Even those characters, those that had only scattered appearances, were done so well that I even ended up liking a couple of them - probably more than I should since they were pretty shady guys. Salvatore, in particular, was a favorite.
The story is a combination of mystery, procedural, crime drama, and thriller, and it certainly keeps you guessing with more suspects than you can shake a stick at. Procedurals can get tedious at times, but that's not a problem here. Every clue that way chased down, every interrogation, every conversation was interesting and added something to the story - even if it was a bit of misdirection. I really enjoyed the reveal and Aislinn's explanation of how she got there.
I'm always on the lookout for crime series with characters I can get invested in and cases that keep me glued to the page. We're two for two with this series, and I really hope to see much more of Curtis Westcott and company. Jeff Buick has penned another gritty tale with The Wrong Side of Murder, and I'll be waiting for the next big case.

The Wrong Side of Murder involves a twenty-year murder mystery that catches you off guard with all its twists and turns. It features detective Aislinn Bryne who has to cope with a long-lost high school friend and has to solve a case that is close to home.

Jeff Buick has vivid characters in his story, and you get to know them as each chapter keeps you wanting to know more. This is a fast-paced thriller so get ready for action. The city of Boston has a history of the mafia involvement in the local businesses and it’s interesting how the detectives interplay the mob’s actions to to find out what the killer is doing.

The backdrop is a twenty-year high school reunion where the police must try to trace what happened on prom night and how did the disappearance of a popular girl leads to the discovery of her dead body so many years later. As the story unravels, the author brings up various scenarios on who might be the killer and you keep thinking the story will soon end and then another detail throws you in a different direction.

The detectives unravel clues that keep you wondering how the cold case can be solved, and yet there are more facts that later bring you guessing what will happen next. The writing is well done and you feel you know these characters as you see them seeking the answers.

This is the second in the Curtis Westcroff detective series but is really a stand-alone thriller. I read it in only two days, and just like A Killing Game, the first in the series, this is a must-read.

I bought and read this book because Buick's first book was the best I'd read in a while. Despite the subject matter being two things I'm not fond of reading about-organized crime and dirty cops-his wonderful writing style and amazingly well plotted storyline kept me reading.

The first chapter of this book chronicled Boston police detective Aislinn Byrnne’s visit to a crime scene. Remodeling in an office building uncovered a dehydrated body stashed inside the wall. When Aislinn gets a good look at the body she recognizes it is Darina, a friend of hers who disappeared twenty years earlier on the night of their senior prom. That first chapter grabbed my attention and I had little doubt this was going to be an intense, interesting read. It turned out even better than I expected.

I’ll try to be vague so as to not spoil the story for anyone, but once Aislinn’s boss is convinced that her relationship with the victim isn’t going to be an issue, she starts digging. As you might expect, things hit close to home with her reliving prom night over and over, evaluating everything that happened prior to Darina’s disappearance, questioning their group of friends, and trying to figure out what happened. Her dad and a couple of his friends who are retired police officers help Aislinn in understanding some of the things going on in the city twenty years ago that a high school girl wouldn’t have been attuned to. In the end, what she uncovers isn’t at all what I’d have guessed at the start of the book, but the road getting there was an intense story that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

This did not have the suspense of the first in the series. I also discovered a few editing errors. Finally, found it hard to believe that a SWAT team would make the mistake of entering in the morning as opposed to night. They knew there were tunnels, but had no one there…….

I've read three books by this author, the last one about two and a half years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed them all, but it only needed one to put him in my favourite-author list. He's a very talented writer, who packs a punch with some deliciously meaty crime thrillers. So it was very exciting to dive into the second of the Detective Curtis Westcott series.

Gosh, I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed Buick's penmanship. I was immersed from page one and firmly hooked right to the last page. Research and attention to detail is second to none, and I love that the main (very likeable) character, Westcott, is generous enough to give centre stage to a member of his homicide team, Aislinn, as she investigates an unsolved twenty-year-old cold case.

Complex, but utterly compelling, with characters you can truly invest in, there's a nail-biting (and wonderfully unpredictable) finish.

I'd forgotten that getting to The End with Buick's books fill you with a bit of dread…in an 'oh no, how am I going to follow that' sort of way. But, this time, I was enormously relieved by the fact that I was able to dive straight into the third in the series.

    Excellent, just excellent.

This book was the perfect continuation of the Curtis Westcott series. I was hooked from the first page and kept reading long into the night. The Wrong Side of Murder is a great story that takes you along on a wild hunt for a killer. You’ll think you know who the killer is and then something happens and you go down a different path. Jeff Buick is my new favourite author. I enjoyed this book very much and can’t wait for book 3.

After reading the Killing Game I was looking forward to The Wrong Side of Murder and it was everything I would have expected from this great author. Don't miss this one as it will keep you guessing until the very end.

I managed 30% but keep straying off to pick at other books - which is never a good sign.

Basically I haven't bonded with any of the characters and have no investment in what happens to them.

And it keeps annoying me that cops are taking folders of work home with them or, within a few hours of finding the body, go to a retirement do and spray around too much information (IMHO).

Just all sounds a little far fetched, I'm afraid
