A Thief In The Night (Carlton House Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 246 ratings

Quinn Waverly is desperate to find his missing twin brother, Jayce. He’s so desperate that he’s willing to risk his reputation – and everything else – to extract information from the one source who might be able to help: a mysterious figure in London’s elite party scene, Roman Carlisle.

For a straight-laced nanny and caretaker like Quinn, nothing could be more unsettling than the raw, animal magnetism that Roman uses to ensnare countless men. Roman agrees to help, but Quinn soon discovers that “helping” means letting Roman into every aspect of his life. The charismatic socialite is only too happy play fixer, as long as he pulls all the strings.

As the trail turns darker and more dangerous, Quinn has little choice but to trust Roman. Hopefully, when it’s over, he’ll have control over his emotions again and won’t be completely under Roman’s spell…

Roman Carlisle is a ruthless master thief with a scandalous and notorious reputation, so it’s not often he finds himself keeping company with a gorgeous man who isn’t willing to fall into his bed. Quinn is a delightfully fresh character in Roman’s world and a welcome distraction from the groupies who worship at his feet. Intrigued, Roman agrees to hunt for Jayce in order to pursue Quinn.

But the path to finding Jayce leads further and further into the seedy underbelly of the city, implicating those who work outside the bounds of the law entirely. Roman will have to use all of his skills to exact justice for Quinn if he wants to achieve his true objective: to steal Quinn’s heart.

4.5 stars. I enjoyed this book a lot (as well as the whole series). I just discovered the series and am sorry to see Rory never got a story and nothing has been added to the series since 2018. This has all of the good parts Lake Cliff does without the bad. I love “good” bad boys and the partners that accept them unconditionally. That’s the problem with the Lake Cliff series. I love Aiden and Lane, but Sage is unbearable. He refuses to accept Lavender and is always looking down on him and his past life and constantly complaining and nagging about everything Lavender does that he doesn’t approve of. It seems like he doesn’t really like anything about Lavender except sex. It’s hard to believe that Lavender would turn his life upside down for someone who is so judgmental of him. I also can’t stand the drug use of Sage and Reginald. The men in this book, at least a few of them, would be considered as bad or even worse than Lavender, but they are totally accepted by their partners, which is what it should be in romance. The perfect series would be Lane and Aiden moving to London, along with Lavender and a new, more deserving partner and them interacting and having adventures with all the Carlton House characters — lose Sage and all the drugs and keep the charm of England/Scotland and all the Carlton house characters.

Ms. Sterling is definitely an author to follow. Her works are always fun, thoughtful, hot and adventurous; never formulaic. Her characters are always memorable and this book is a perfect illustration of that.
Roman is a master thief, fancies himself a wit (he is) who makes up the rules as he goes along. He meets Quinn, who is looking for his brother (Jayce). Quinn is a nice guy, a nanny (with MMA skills). He asks Roman for help and gets a lot more than he bargained for. Quinn is introduced to a lifestyle he never imagined existed, inhabited with a colourful cast of characters. All the while dealing with Roman popping up at random times in his daily life.
The writing style and story took a while to get used to - I thought it jumped around a little and sometimes it wasn't clear who was doing whom :) There were some grammar issues ('drug' for dragged), but once I settled into the book, I was hooked and was able to overlook those issues.
I would say it's a solid 3.5 read; possibly a 4 because of Roman - he's a delight! I have the next book in the series waiting!

I am a little late to the game.......usually, I read a K. Sterling book immediately but life got in the way and I just found this beautiful gem. K. Sterling is an immediate 1-click for me and finding this book had been released made me yell to the heavens "thank you!".

Quinn and Roman - wow, just wow! I just fell in love with these two. Both men had more depth than most of the men I've met and it was wonderful. It was written so well and it flowed perfectly.......which is important in a wonderfully written book. What really took this book to the next level were the secondary characters: the crazy family, the psycho nanny friend, the charming butler and the muscle. It all worked, and well. You were fanning your face from the heat, laughing out loud, rubbing your chest when all the feels hit. This was an amazing story and I am secretly hoping that the troubled Jayce gets his own story, and it involves an Irishman! And the epilogue? *Snickers*

Thanks K. Sterling for once again filling my life with a wonderful story that takes me away from everything else. I just love your work!!! You spin a great story and you write excellent steam! I think this book is now in my top 5 from all of your books. Bravo........

I'm not sure what I can add review-wise about A Thief In The Night that the other reviewers haven't said better. I enjoyed this story a lot, especially Roman, and I pretty much agree with the reviews I've read from the threes all the way to the fives. Yes, there are parts of the writing that could maybe use some extra attention and tweaking for clarity and flow, but there was also a lot of fun, funny, sweet, sexy, dark, gritty writing as well. It had good characters, humor, and story and I enjoyed reading about Roman and Quinn and look forward to reading more by this author.

I used to read m/f regency stories about Rakes, then I read a couple of m/m regency romances which were kinda of cute, then I read A Thief In The Night and I was totally captivated!

    K. Sterling is so terrific at creating characters that feel so real and definitely Roman (the rake) and Quinn (the nanny as in Mary Poppins variety) are two characters not easily forgotten. Roman truly fulfills my fantasy of a real rake and the seduction of Quinn in front of and out of sight of the public, will definitely get your juices flowing. Quinn is no ordinary Mary Poppins not with a MMA title under his belt. The story is exquisite and well worth reading! K. Sterling another book that shows your extraordinary writing ability!

I liked this story and enjoyed watching as Roman and Quinn came together. This was a solid 3-star read for me, meaning that I liked it and consider it money well-spent, but it probably won't be a re-read for me. I liked Quinn from the start but Roman took a bit to warm up to (which makes perfect sense, him being a rake and all 😀). But parts of the story fell flat for me. I would've liked more evolution of the relationship as it felt a little rushed once Quinn let go and trusted Roman. As with most of her books, the secondary characters were fun and I want more of Mr. Bishop and Grigore! I didn't much like Minton, he was too over-the-top for me but I'm looking forward to Ran's story!

This book has all it takes to ensnare you and keep you prisoner until it is over! Great MC (I mean, we're talking about the greatest thief in the world, rich, powerful, seemingly unapproachable, AND stunningly beautiful), amazing side characters (Jenna is just the best, but Mr. Bishop, Gridore, Ranulf, Jayce, Darius are all great), a well plotted story and the fantasy of "the life of the riches".
You should definitely read this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!

I started this book and soon found it was hard to put down! The characters are so charming and well written. The plot keeps you turning the pages! You can't wait to find out what will happen but you are sad when you finish this fantastic book!
Quinn will do anything to find out what happened to Jayce even put himself in danger. Quinn has be enter a world where he doesn't belong. Meeting Roman turns Quinn's life on its head.
Roman belongs in this world but he recognises Quinn doesn't. Roman feels the pull of attraction to Quinn and he knows this is different. He needs to get close to Quinn and he can't stay away.
The secondary characters are just as well written and add to the story. Mr Bishop is just a dream and it's hard not to fall for him a little.
Roman helps Quinn but he has his own agenda as well. There are secrets that will come out and change the people around them.
This is an intense love story but there is so much more to this book and you will be kept hooked until the very end.
I can't recommend this book strongly enough. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I'm a big fan of this lady's work. Another great book, full of adventure and with compellingly written MCs. I fell in love with the both of them and also the story. Ms Sterling writes books full of adventure, mischief and humour. Can't wait for the next book in the series. I don't understand why she isn't more popular, she's one of the best out there, writes books that are just a little different from the usual mm romances on offer. Very underrated on my opinion.

Good book, would have been so much better in a first person POV. Things got a bit muddled in pretty much every scene as to who was doing what to whom so I was a bit confused and very frustrated in that aspect. Very glad for the HEAs
