Trained to Win: Winter Sports, Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 90 ratings

Jordi never felt his heart soar until he stumbled upon the performance of a figure skater dressed all in black wowing crowds in Chicago on a magical day after Christmas. Their first meeting ended with a kiss that turned Jordi’s world upside down causing him to question everything about his attractions to both women and men. Was it obsession? Infatuation? Hero worship? All three?

Pegged as the bad boy of the figure skating world, Tristan warded off the damaging effects of past abuses and tragedies by building stainless steel walls around his vulnerable heart. He’s been trained to win as the only valid path forward to rise above his troubled early life. The goal was simple until Jordi appeared armed with innocence and honesty, the perfect twin wrecking balls for tearing down Tristan’s barriers.

It doesn’t take long for both of them to realize they belong together, but difficulties of distance, culture and ambition all threaten to stand in their way. Will friends, loving families, and the will to win be enough?

Trained to Win is a 55,000-word gay romance novel with a happily-ever-after ending and first-time gay themes. It is the second book in the series Winter Sports, but it can be read as a standalone story.

Note: A brief city mugging scene is described.

I’ve always loved figure skating and was even named after one. This book brought the world of skating straight back to me. I loved the characters from the first book and was glad to see them also in this one. The story about a sport and through that sport brought together two people in love was amazing with all the problems they faced and still come together afterwards. Another powerful story by a great author

I nearly DNF’ed/rated the book less stars when, the only time that I can remember skin color being mentioned was during the mugging of one of the main characters. One of the attackers had skin that was some shade of coco. (As I’ve said in other book reviews, the villains/bad guys can be any color, but it becomes problematic when they are the ONLY people of color.) But I also wanted to find out what happened next.
The story was interesting enough. I enjoyed Jordy’s sweet nature and Tristan’s attitude. I think it helped to balance the relationship in some ways. But I was never fully engrossed in the romance either. I think I liked their time together best, but with much of their relationship being spent apart, I never fully connected, or believed their connection.
Maybe we can call this a 2.5 rounded up.

This book was an intriguing blend of winter sports, especially figure skating. I loved the strong characters- Tristan and Jordi being complete opposites both physically and emotionally. Watching their comittment develop despite the odds was a sweet and satisfying emotional adventure! ❤️

I absolutely love figure skating. There's just something about the graceful flow and timing that has me riveted and holding my breath as the skater builds up to a difficult jump or spin. Needless to say, I was excited to get my hands on a romance about a figure skater. By reputation, Tristan is the bad boy of figure skating. He's a bit standoffish and even rude at times. Then there's Jordi. We met the sweet, take care of everyone Jordi in Built for Speed and he's even more lovable as we learn more about him here. As the story progresses and Tristan's backstory unfolds, his loner attitude makes more and more sense. I loved the patience this pair has with each other and the way Jordi brings Tristan out of his shell. As an added bonus, we get some time on the ice in both hockey and figure skating, plus some peeks at James and Lucas from the first book in the series. As always with this author, the book is well-written and the storyline and characters draw the reader in, keeping the pages turning.

I read this book as part of an arc program. I loved this book, I loved Jordi and Tristan. This was the second book in the Winter Sports series. In this book, we see Jordi again. Jordi was in the first book Build for Speed and was best friends with James who was featured in that book. Jordi played hockey in college and also speedskated. In the beginning Jordi was in Chicago visiting James and Lucas over the Christmas break and they see Tristan skating at the outdoor rink. Jordi is fascinated with watching Tristan's figure skating and tells James and Lucas he wants to stay and watch and will see them later. When Tristan finishes skating, he sees Jordi waiting for him and introduces himself. Tristan is an Olympic hopeful figure skater and known as the bad boy of skating. They go for a walk and exchange numbers. When they are parting, Tristan kisses Jordi and Jordi flees. Jordi is beginning to question if he is attracted to men or just Tristan. Over time, they develop a friendship long distance and Tristan helps Jordi with his feelings. Tristan has had a hard life and finds it hard to let people close, except for his landlady and her son, as well as his coach. For some reason, Tristan wants to get close to Jordi and it scares him. Jordi wants to be with Tristan, but they have a lot of things to work through with the long distance. Jordi is a great guy who wants to help everyone and sees the good in everyone. I loved their connection and I loved how Tristan wanted to help Jordi discover hos feelings. Tristan's past made was so emotional, you can't help but want him to be happy. This story made me want to laugh and cry, I loved the characters and their journey. Great story!

This is a fast paced, interesting story of discovery. Jordi is a reserved, laid back, and sensitive man who finds himself confused about his sexuality after being mesmerized watching a figure skater one night. Tristan is dedicated, tough and insecure man who's career is in limbo. There is an instant attraction between them, but it's complicated by Jordi's confusion and Tristan's insecurities. Their relationship slowly develops over a couple of years, while each tries to figure out where life is headed. They're both caring and giving individuals under all their stubbornness, they just need to learn to give in to love. Which they do.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

It is second book in Winter Sports series but it can be read as a standalone.
As much as interesting as Built for Speed was this book was sooooo much better. This is a story about a relationship between figure skater Tristan and a hockey player/speed skater Jordi.
It was sweet and enjoyable . I really liked both MCs and all their friends. It was a believable (more or less) gay-for-you story . It kept me entertained and interested in what would happen next. Apart from promised HFN/HEA in the end it was quite unpredictable . I liked watching how MCs solved their problems and this time I understood their decisions.

The writing style was good, the story was fast paced and apart from sweet romance it talked about struggling with long distance relationship and coming to terms with (unexpected) bisexuality .

I can't wait for more books in this series!

Wow what a rollercoaster of emotions between Jordi and Tristan finding each other losing each other trying to overcome the distance between them and for Jordi his sexuality - loved how that developed. Loved the Minnesota pond scenes. Wonderful that they overcame the problems with Tristan's coach and that Tristan found a new career all leading t a happy ever after ending.
