But like all of us, Vinson delivered the dead bodies he created to our parasites, the imps; bodies for disposal which would otherwise rot in plain sight of Mankind, be pondered and investigated. Exposed corpses were too dangerous for us, a tiny minority stalking the world of fragile mortals. Buried bodies were discovered too often. And new technology? iPhones with cameras, still shots or videos uploaded for eternity on the internet highway revealed us to the billions of spiteful people on the planet, the villagers with pitchforks.-Parasites: A Tale of Route 66

I'm a huge fan of everything vampire, from films to novels, and this collection of short stories satisfied my itch for good, classic vampire horror. Loved it and look forward to more collections like this from Nightmare Press and the very cool editor, Todd Sullivan.

Every now and then I love to disappear between the pages of an anthology, especially when it’s delivered with a central theme. I don’t read a lot of horror, but I do enjoy it now and then, and I liked the idea of The Vampire Connoisseur being themed around, well…vampires. Don’t expect stakes, crosses, and garlic.

What made this collection so intriguing is the diversity in the plots the authors delivered--all so unique with distinctive voices. Some stories deliver subtle goosebumps and chills while others carry more than a slant of gore. As in any anthology, readers are bound to savor a few stories over others. For me, I especially enjoyed The Red Angel by Lisa Hario, The Sun Sets Nonetheless by Priscilla Bettis, Splinters by Keawe Melina Patrick, Parasites: A tale of Route 66 by B.J. Thrower and Take Me Home Tonight by Troy Diffenderfer. Of special note, I loved the mentions of Woody Guthrie in the Route 66 tale.

Read a few stories at a time or read them all at once. However you choose, this is an enjoyable collection for vampire lovers and lovers of horror.

    3.5/5

It's always been hard for me to rate an anthology, but here goes!

I've been a fan of vampires since I read some of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles in high school. They were my first supernatural creature, and I'll always have a soft spot for the vengeful bloodsuckers.

Going into this book, I had high hopes. There's plenty of room to reimagine the concept of vampires. Overall, I had a good time!

Favorites of mine were The Red Angel, A Fiend Indeed, The Sun Sets Nonetheless, Splinter, and Take Me Home Tonight. Each of these had a unique take on vampires that made it hard to stop flipping those pages, especially The Red Angel, The Sun Sets Nonetheless, and Take Me Home Tonight. These stories really made this book shine!

Honorable mention goes to A Visit from Saint Vic. We don't see enough Christmas-themed vampire stories out there!

I will say that in between my favorite were a number of stories that felt a bit lackluster in comparison (that dragged my rating down a bit), but I did enjoy each story in some way, so they each have their merit.

Overall, this anthology had some real gems within, and I had fun exploring these vampiric worlds and realities. If you're looking for new vampire stories by talented indie authors, definitely pick this book up!

I’ve avoided vampire stories for years. I think Anne Rice spoiled me with Interview with the Vampire, which I loved. And the vixen vampires on television… ugh. But this anthology has a great cover and vetted stories. I gave it a go, and I’m glad I did.

There are sixteen stories by sixteen authors, and each story is vastly different. Some have sublime characters with unique voices. Others have incredible world-building. And still others have unusual plots. My favorites included some of each, particularly those stories that surprised me with their originality or made me empathize with vampires, or both. Be prepared for some gruesome blood and guts too.

Favorites were The Red Angel (amazing), The Sun Sets Nonetheless, Finch, and Dissidents. Recommended for readers of horror who enjoy well-written vampire stories.

I am posting this on behalf of one of my friends to whom I bought her this book for Xmas. She said in her own words the following,
“Books no matter the reviews can either be a hit or miss just like receiving Xmas gifts we don’t know if it interests us until we open it. I struck gold in receiving this book as a gift from a good friend. The book pulls you in, maintains the magnetic interest and has individual immersive stories. One story I have to say was not only by far the best but was the most enthralling and captivating. The vivid images created in my mind shows the extent of the high calibre of words the writer used. Dr Melina Patrick who dazzled my book club with her writing created a buzz of wanting Dt Patrick to write her own book, a story we hope does factually happen.”

4.0 out of 5 stars I would highly encourage anyone to grab this collection...

I'm a big fan of anthologies, and also a big fan of horror, so when a book comes along that's both horror and an anthology, I'm all on board!

"Todd Sullivan Presents: The Vampire Connoisseur" is an anthology about, you guessed it, vampires, by a variety of authors. Vampires, in one way or another, are featured in every story. Sometimes they appear as the quintessential black-cloak-wearing bad guy, at other times they're depicted in a softer, more ambiguous light. But, bloodsuckers are the common theme that unites this collection of stories.

Like many anthologies, not all of the stories punch with the same weight (there were a number of stories I skipped over), but the stories that were great, were really great. The absolute standout highlight of this anthology was "The Sun Sets Nonetheless", by Priscilla Bettis. This story was a breath of fresh air; a unique take on vampires - which is something quite difficult to achieve. Bettis knocks it out of the park with this atmospheric, gripping piece. Another favourite of mine, was anthology opener, "The Red Angel", which again managed to capture a unique look at the vampiric condition. Author, Lisa Hario, creates a hauntingly beautiful story about a deadly creature, one that will stick with me for a long while. Other honourable mentions include, "A Fiend Indeed", "Dissident", "Splinters", and the highly original, and weirdly awesome, "Parasites: A Tale of Route 66" by B. J. Thrower - talk about unique!

These gems certainly make up for the few clunkers in the anthology, and I would highly encourage anyone to grab this collection, even just for the stories listed above. Some of these will stick with you for a long time. At just $2.99 (US) you can't go wrong.

I admit I'm not a big fan of vampire fiction, so of these 16 stories about the antics of the undead, I most enjoyed those that introduced new elements to the genre, or embedded the vampire theme into a more complex plot, specifically: "A Visit from Saint Vic," "A Cold Dish," and "Take Me Home Tonight." The ones I liked the least were those that were mainly gore-fests. After a few mentions of gushing blood, slurping blood, fangs ripping out throats, and dismembered corpses, the shock value wears off, and if there isn't much more to the story, tedium sets in.
The writing in this collection ranges from excellent to adequate. I recommend it to vampire aficionados and readers who are vampire-curious. 3.5 stars, rounded up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diverse Vampire Tales!

A collection of tightly written stories on the theme of vampires. I enjoyed reading this diverse tales and the three that stood out to me were; Parasites; A Tale of Route 66 by BJ Thrower, Splinters by Keawe Melina Patrick and The Sun Sets Nonetheless by Priscilla Bettis. All 3 authors have an individual narrative voice which is a delight to read and all 3 provided me with a unique and original view on the well-told tale of the vampire.

I really enjoyed this book. There are a lot of great variations on what can otherwise be a worn out topic. A fantastic compilation from a lot of very talented writers!
