John Rydell was 4000 miles away when he got the phone call from his wife.

'John there's someone in the house.'

By the time he was home, tragedy had struck. A tragedy that threatened to engulf him, bringing back long forgotten and repressed memories of his days at university.

Now his old friends are dying, one by one. They are found gutted, disembowelled, ruined.

There were
twelve of them twenty years ago, in university, and there were twelve of them for a reason.

D E McCluskey was born in 1973, in Liverpool, England. He is the author of novels, graphic novels and comics. He lives with his daughter (an author in her own right (at the age of 8) with her children's adventure The Hangry Hamster), his partner, her daughter, and a sausage dog called Ted.

He began writing in 2011, creating his first comic publication entitled Interesting Tymes, an anthology of short horror stories written in rhyme for children and adults. This was quickly followed by the second in the series, along with a spin off. Dave then moved on to more adult related fiction, releasing a number of one-shot comics, followed by his first, full length book, the graphic novel, Doppelgänger.

More graphic novels and comics ensued, including a collaboration with artist Joe Matthews to produce a retelling of the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, only this time rewritten completely in rhyme.

Dave then turned his sights onto writing novels. His debut novel The Twelve was released in 2017 to great reviews. This was followed by a collaboration with a local, Liverpool music historian, to produce a historical thriller called In The Mood… For Murder, based in Liverpool in 1946.

Dave likes to work mostly in dark, or mainstream horror, although he has cross genres into extreme horror, comedy, thrillers, romantic drama, and children's books.

He is also working with a number of other authors/comic creators, in collaborations in their works.

This was my first DE McCluskey book, and I loved it! I cannot wait to read more by him. I gave it 4.5 stars but rounded to 5. Some of the actual deaths felt a little long. Now, what I loved about the book.

I loved how it alternated between the past, present, and the different characters. This book had a lot more story than just gory kills too. It had an excellent story which you get in pieces throughout the book. It’s a hard book to put down because you want to know what happened in the past, but the present is just as interesting! It did wrap up very nicely, and I felt very satisfied/content with how it ended. Overall, a very solid book! What would you do if some of your old friends turned up dead…? Is it a coincidence? You will have to read to find out!

My review is really three and a half stars, but you can't give that, so I'll give the benefit of the doubt and round up to four. This was like a watching a grade B horror movie and not expecting too much but getting just what you expected. Okay book. Lot's of gore, dead people, dating back to a twenty year old back story, that was very predictable but somewhat fun to read if you don't expect anything very exceptional or new. Went through this book fast. The writing is okay if you don't mind the English folks saying "erm" all the time (for "um"). Also the use of "sat" and "stood" that sounds wrong to our ears. So, it's okay and that's it.

A truly horrifying and engrossing ghost story. The story alternates between past and present to create a perfectly grim and violent tale. The tension is kept masterfully high as each victim in the present leads to more revelations from the past. The characters are well written with living personalities that you'll find evoke real emotion. You'll love them, hate them, sympathize with them, and then find that these feelings change as who they really are comes to the surface. McCluskey has weaved a fantastic tale of pure horror that will hook your attention completely at the expense of all outside elements. Like a phone restarting and declaring Hello Moto and stopping my heart briefly.

I liked the visceral feel to this story. The graphic violence is perfect for a gore hound. I like the pacing and the author is able to bounce back and forth from past to present in a fluid manner. The ending didn't do it for me. I was prepared for a bloodied closing and feel it didn't deliver at all.

I'm giving it 5 stars for the spooky plot and developed characters. But good grief, couldn't ANY of the proofreaders find the same glaring mistakes repeated throughout the book? 'The waitress was stood over a man at another table...' 'I was sat at the bar...' Is this a British way of speaking? Maybe so. But I've never come across this issue and it's kind of jarring to find it all through the book.

I enjoyed this story, and would have given it 5 stars if not for the HORRIBLE editing. I very much wonder how some books get published with the glaring errors they contain, from extra commas to missing commas, misspelled words to incorrect grammar. Luckily the story kept me intrigued enough to finish it.

The book flips back and forth between present day and twenty years ago. In present day, we follow John as he learns of the grisly murders of his friends from university. Twenty years ago, the Twelve participated in a ritual to attain their deepest wishes.

Fast forward to present day, where all of the are being murdered by a mysterious being. The being presents itself in the form of a shockingly cold room, intensely stinky smell, and literal frost on most surfaces. The members of the Twelve experience this phenomena for several days, sometimes weeks, before they are murdered.

I did figure out the murderer before it was revealed, but enjoyed the twists and turns of the mystery. The deaths were fairly imaginative, though the overuse of the release of each victim's bladder got old.

Be warned, there are some pretty graphic sex and murder scenes, though all fit in to the story well. Overall, with some polishing from a good editor, this is a great book!

Somehow a good horror story is like a delicious dinner but don’t eat dinner while you’re reading this it is so well done and so exciting you may find it hard to put down. I did.

Really good story, and well written. But, oh my, quite graphic and gory. One of those "not for the squeamish books". If you like horror, and you don't mind the "blood and guts", (and sex too) go for it!

I listened on Audible at 1.30x speed. I loved the narration! I enjoyed that i could guess some things, but the twists at the end were still unexpected! I love ghost stories, and this was so good. Some gory parts were so well written and narrated that I *almost* had to pause for a break! Exactly what I love in a book. Nothing beats the dark and twisty! This is the second book ive read/listened to by this author and I really loved The Boyfriend, too!

I love a good horror story and this fits the bill, perhaps with a bit more gore than I am used to but it all fits in with the plot. There are genuinely scary parts and the description detail is excellent, sounds, smells feelings of ice cold are all in this book. My only issue was how repetitive it becomes as each one of the victims falls prey to the supernatural force, nevertheless a very good read for horror junkies like myself. Great ending!

Stumbled upon this book advertised on Amazon whilst having a little browse. The cover intrigued me first, then synopsis and finally, clinching the deal, was discovering the author is a fellow Liverpudlian. To show support for local talent, am I glad I purchased! Have enjoyed immensely! Great story, well written, full of intrigue and suspense and most of all an ending that didn't disappoint. Looking forward to further novels, and am just about to check on Amazon for more.....
