About the author

Jess and Keith Flaherty are one of those married couples sitcoms never get right. They have been together for over twenty years and still can’t get enough of each other’s company.
They live in the beautiful mountains of Vermont with their two children, three cats, a dog, and an immortal guinea pig. Jess has worked in newspaper and art publishing, freelance writing, cake decorating, and in addition to writing and editing, she works as the Program Manager and Educational/Vocational Specialist for a therapeutic home/transition program for young adults. She enjoys playing the ukulele badly, reading, and binge-watching unhealthy amounts of TV.
Keith spent many years as a chef and business manager, and now works with Jess in residential mental health as the program's Culinary Services Manager. In his free time, he enjoys writing poetry, reading, or cooking something his family will think is amazing.
As a couple, Jess and Keith love to cook together, go hiking, and spend time together and with their boys. Of course, they also love writing together. Their first book, Always Darkest, was recently called “A very different story,” and “A solid fantasy novel,” by fantasy icon, Piers Anthony, and fans have compared their style to a combination of Douglas Adams, George R.R. Martin, and Christopher Lamb.
From fantasy, to horror, to romance, to humor, if you check out Jess and Keith’s work, you won’t be disappointed!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis collection zeroes in more often than not on characters related to the Arbitratus Trilogy. Although you don’t have to be familiar with the source material to follow any of these stories, it makes a fine supplement to the Arbitratus canon, and those who know and love its characters will likely enjoy visiting them here in a variety of settings.
Highlights include :
“Introduction.” This opening statement from the authors is so fun, so full of personality, that it got me excited about reading what was coming next.
“Ghosts of Yuletide Past.” A sweet sad piece about letting go.
“Christmas Miracles.” In this cute story, a young man helps his kid brother bake some cookies. Recipe (for snickerdoodles) included, and delivered with a lot of warmth and humor.
“Faerie Lights.” During a visit to the woods, eight-year-old Ben has an encounter with a faerie who turns out to be more dangerous than he could have imagined. Fortunately, she’s not nearly as dangerous as the family cat!
“Joyeux Noël.” A sweet series of vignettes featuring a young Mal enjoying her Canadian family’s Christmas traditions.
There’s a cozy tinge to most of the work included here, perfectly suited to a Christmas-time read, that I think a lot of readers will enjoy. Some items have a bit less plot than I like (being more scenario than a story), but if you’re looking for warm holiday experiences, you’ve come to the right place.
