Exiled Kindle Edition
Close your eyes. I’ll close mine too.
Growing up, I was the problem child teachers didn’t know what to do with.
The troubled teen whose parents wished was never born.
The system’s made of cracks, and I fell through each and every one, all in a futile effort to protect the family legacy.
They tried to fix me.
Doctors…therapists…teachers…pastors…
And they failed. Epically.
Now, eighteen, and fresh out of Hell, I’m thrown into the last place I ever expected.
Rehab.
Enter Nolan Dresden.
Newly divorced. A recovering alcoholic. Almost double my age.
He doesn’t think he needs to be here anymore than I do, and all he sees when he looks at me is a privileged little prince.
But when a team building exercise takes a deadly turn, stranding Nolan and I out in the wild for a night, not only do we find ourselves bonding over our shared trauma…
But surrendering to a current neither of us can escape.
Six weeks.
That’s all we have together before we have to come up for air.
He’s worried I’ll grow attached.
I’m worried he’s right.
But like the storms that rage inside me…
There’s no stopping the inevitable.
And when all is said and done, it’ll be a miracle if either of us walk away unscathed.

About the author

Jessie Walker is an indie author of queer love stories based out of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where she lives with her long-time partner and fur-spawn. Drawn to all things dark and twisted, she likes to pretend she's not the hopeless romantic at heart that she is. She has ADHD and a background in psychology/mental health services, both of which contribute greatly to her storytelling and the themes of her long-winded, character-driven works. When she's not drudging away at a keyboard, there's a very good chance you'll find her vegged out on her couch, listening to sad '90s grunge, and day dreamin’ about the all the stories crowding her brain.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025I was dreading to read the last chapters because I didn't want this book to end.
It was perfect. I could place myself in Skylers shoes most of the time.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024This book took me a bit longer to finish than the others in this series but I felt like there was so much I had to take mini breaks to take everything in. Sky was gad so much going on but I absolutely loved how it made us see into the mind/brain of an autistic person. Something not everyone gets to experience besides watching it from the outside. Every episode and emotions Sky was feeling was explained in such vivid detail which I thought was beautiful. I have autistic nephews and have experienced their outbursts but have never felt like I knew exactly what was going on in their brain until this book. I am so glad that Nolan found Skyler in that bar. That after everything they both went through, the trauma and addiction, they got there happily ever after! Even had their own kid together with Mels help!🥹

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025What a journey this book was! Both heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. I don't think I have cried so much for a book in my life! Watching both Nolan and Skyler's personal struggles, along with their struggles as a couple was as gut wrenching as it was amazing. This was so beautifully written and what a ride it was. I am so happy Skyler got all the love and understanding he never had in his life through Nolan. This book was perfect in every way!

Great book, defiantly will recommend it to others!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2023From the very first sentence of this book I had goosebumps splashing slowly on my skin. This is how I react to anything Jessie writes. Only on a thought. Shivers. Goosebumps. Tears in the corner of my eyes. Only with the pure knowledge that it will move every fiber in my system.
Call it fate. While reading the last pages a storm and lightning rolled in. On a full moon.
Embedded into my veins. Into my soul. Into my heart. Only humans with pure vulnerability, respect and empathy for human emotions can write books like this. And that human is you Jessie.
99% of this book was me wiping single tears from my eyes - of sorrow and joy. The interactions and words spoken between Skyler and Nolan. Epic love story? Definitely. My person type of love. Simple as that. The way they spoke to each other and shared, shared so much - support and acceptance. All these little details engraved themselves. Their individual thoughts and struggles. Loyalty and resilience. Little quirks and characteristics. I don’t know if I ever felt so purely wholesome about two fictional characters ever before. To the fullest.
The primal intimacy. Under their skin. My skin pebbled. Right along with theirs.
But most of all. The mental health representation, spectrum in this book, that love has no bounds. The depth of it all. Jessie scratched every surface with such care. I got reminded to never fail another like that. The essential representation of Dr. Maddock. Skyler’s determination. Nolan’s constant.
I’ve read a lot of memorable books this year that will forever stay. A few cherished gems in between that captured me for eternity. And then this tale happened. Rolled in with its storms, and all. How can I ever get over that?
What I am taking with me:
💜. The superior playlist. It’s the true heartbeat of this book.
🌪️. “The night sky. If there’s a heaven, I hope that’s where it is. Embedded in his skin.”
🖤. “Stunning, right? Who knew?”
🌪️. “They failed me… But I don’t have to fail myself.”
💜. “It’s like magic.” - “You touch me, and it all quiets. You hold me, and it all stops.”
🌪️. Pinkie.
🖤. “Forget the ocean—let me drown in him. Engrave me in his bones. Bury me in his veins. Let me die as I lived—as his.”
🌪️. “I’m still there.”
💜. “Close your eyes. I’ll close mine too.”

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2024I don’t think I’ll forget about Skyler and Nolan any time soon this book was stunningly beautiful it hurt so good! These two have been through so much between addiction, abuse ,near death experiences and being split for some years but somehow they beat the odds and ended up right where they belonged in each others arms. The Depiction of autism in this book is everything it was beautifully written people deserve to read about themselves like this and the love they deserve it was amazing Skyler was so special in every way and no one had ever treated him well or tried to learn him until Nolan. Nolan listened he took his time to learn Sky and he fell for him they were prefect together Nolan grounded Skyler and Skyler made Nolan see that it was ok to make mistakes and that he also was An amazing strong man. And the spice was sooo good it was hot as hell 🥵😏. The touchy subjects were very well written like the assault, alcoholism and attempted suicide all of it was written with care ❤️ I loved this book so much and the fact that Skylar was so understanding knowing of Nolan’s baby girl their little family later in the book a single dad romance is so hot! 🫶🏻

5.0 out of 5 stars Storms and All 🖤
"He doesn’t smell like the ocean anymore. But he still smells like mine."
The Unlucky 13 series keeps introducing me to some of new favourite authors.
I can't believe I haven't read Jessie's books before. This was phenomenal.. the character development, the world building, everything..it was all so beautifully done.
Both our MMCs are broken and flawed and it's a struggle to find a way to their HEA. Nolan is a man who's made mistakes in his life due to his addiction and lives with regrets every day struggling to find a way to move forward. Sky is a neglected and abused soul who is desperately in need of someone to understand and accept him for who he is. They find what is supposed to be temporary solace in one another, but the more time they spend together the more they realise temporary isn't what either of them truely wants.
This book will hit you will all the feels.. prepare to be happy, sad, mad, heartbroken, in love, and everything in-between.
Skylar Sinclair is a character I will accept no criticism on. That boy has my heart completely.. he's so tragically broken yet finds a way to heal and keep fighting for what he wants and deserves in life.
I feel like I could keep talking about this book but I don't want to spoil things so I'm ending this now.
There are some very sensitive topics discussed in this book so make sure to check trigger/content warnings if needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The characters are GOLD ✨
This book….omg i love stories that portray real life experiences and have deep complex characters WHILE having the spicy moments we all love, the characters….i am telling you that I feel IN LOVE with my beautiful skysky, such an enchanting and endearing soul, I cried my eyes out when he said “why does no one ever want to keep me?” I relate so much with his story, I don’t have adhd or autism but I do have PTSD, the anxiety, the triggers, the trauma, the snaps, the little understanding our world has for people who are dealing with this things…I felt so much for Skyler…Nolan, well Nolan is everything that someone could possibly ask for, his self awareness, accountability, the respect and care he has for sky, we are not perfect, but he is the perfect example on how you do not need to be perfect to do the right thing or at least try your best for yourself and the people you love ❤️🩹

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfyingly Indulgent
Everything a reading addict like myself could ask for—descriptive, emotional, gloriously angsty—give me more, more, more!
If you read the blurb, it is absolutely what you're going to get from reading this. Addiction, dependency, emotional neglect, gaslighting, neurodiversity, mental health disorders—these characters have suffered through it all, and my cold, frozen heart feels all the empathy.
I've loved every novel released by Jessie thus far, and Exiled is no different. I truly mean it when I describe this as an indulgent read. It's insanely immersive, you live and breathe the characters and I. Totally. Relate. And the HEA guaranteed at the end of all the trials and tribulations? I'm so here for it. It's a bubble of reading hangover I never want to recover from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Took me a bit...
Though I loved the characters from the start, I didn't really connect with the story the first time I read it, and DNFed at 30%. So when the audiobook came out, I tried again, and I absolutely loved it. Such a heartfelt story and I'm so happy I came back.

5.0 out of 5 stars I’ll never look at a strawberry the same way
Exiled was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. Everything I read of Jessie’s is brilliant, emotional, powerful, heartbreaking, healing and Exiled was no exception. Jessie is one of those authors who could publish a grocery list and I’d rate it 5⭐️
