Under His Heel: A Dark, Toxic, M/M Romance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 809 ratings

Nobody ever said Alex was smart, but incurring a huge debt might have been the worst decision he's made in his life. Still, the space station has a bondservant system: Sell your body for a little while, and some other poor schmuck pays off the debt.

Alex figures it'll be an easy five years when Captain Tracht takes on his contract.

Except beneath that calm, controlled demeanor is a sadist, and Tracht delights in humiliating Alex at every turn. Alex is trapped, and the only way through this is to give Tracht what he wants.

The manipulation, pain, tears, and torture will break Alex—unless he starts to enjoy it. Unless he bends to Tracht's will, and forgets about getting out of this at all.

Because no matter how hard Alex struggles, Tracht always gets what he wants.

Torture, humiliation, and feelies! Oh my!

A deliciously dark, twisted and disturbing tale. There is plenty here to outrage notions of political correctness and good taste and I enjoyed it tremendously! This is a front-runner for one of the best things I’ve read this year!

This twisted sci-fi story story takes place in a futuristic world where “Alex,” the muscle of a duo of inept and petty con-men, finds himself a contracted for 5 years as bondsman to a mercilessly, fiendishly kinky “master” in exchange for payment of a huge debt that will result in loss of his life if not paid. But Alex isn’t the brightest bulb in the chandelier and is impervious to any nuance, social cues, social niceties or motivations of others.

Alex’s primary duties involve obedience, submission to humiliation, pain, and sexual-slavery-but the master’s latitude in what he can make his “slave” do or subject him to are very, very wide and he’s quite ruthless and merciless in squashing/punishing any rebellion/disobedience. But this complex tale is not “just” torture-porn, but an examination of a complex master/slave relationship.

I made a huge list of what was done, but I don’t think Amazon would let this review go through if I included it among my comments.

The author is a good writer and a good storyteller. She is thorough and leaves no stone unturned and makes the growing attachment between the master and slave make sense—a necessity for me to “buy” into and enjoy a story like this. She worked hard to make all of this work and took no lazy shortcuts or relied on “simple” lust or sexual attraction as many erotica and romance writers often do. I’m a romance reader, so, the journey is more important to me than the destination and this book is a wonderful trip! I can’t wait to read more from this author!

    *Spoilers*

I think this is the first time I've read a book by this author and I'm not sure what to make of it. I had read the summary of what this book was about, but a lot of the content I was not expecting. I was honestly shocked, horrified, disliked, and in disbelief on several different scenes as this book in a way, was darker than I expected. I don't exactly know what I was expecting, but I wasn't expecting the main character to basically be suffering from Stockholm syndrome and experiencing the other main character grooming/conditioning him to be someone he wants him to be. Petersons had a right to be concerned and every validation he made about what was going on between Alex and Tracht was correct, because it really wasn't a healthy relationship and how Tracht treated Alex was really wrong. I felt so bad for Alex many times throughout this book. I hated the fact that he was constantly called ugly, emotionally/physically/verbally abused and degraded, being used/back stabbed by people he thought he could trust, has been purposefully isolated/manipulated for most/all of his life by his brother which has left him naive to a lot of things (plus not attending school), and I highly doubt he has ever truly been shown love by anyone that didn't have ulterior motives (I consider Trachts affections to be twisted). He has a temper from being on the streets and he doesn't truly seem to understand a lot of his emotions along with a bunch of other things that he should be able to understand at 24 years old. The scene after the party with how truly broken he was after everything that had happened (as he was pretty much violated, used, seen as less of a person and more as an object, verbally/emotionally abused, and I think he honestly felt disgusted/horrified with everything that happened at that party. It took such an emotional toll on him, that he literally was trying to save himself from the pain by just not being mentally present.), it honestly made me start crying for him. Tracht had seriously nearly come close to breaking him and I wished there had been more discussion between them about how Alex was feeling and why, because Alex was honestly confused on why he felt the way he did afterwards. I also could not believe how twisted and inhumane everyone at that party was. And the piercings that Nadia had was absolutely horrifying.
I don't really know what to make of Tracht. In the beginning I am pretty sure he didn't think of Alex anymore than someone to use/enjoy to meet his needs. A few times he did seem to care about Alex, but it was honestly confusing since he'd be mean one moment than nice the next to the point that he was very unpredictable (which is how Alex felt). I hated the fact that he instilled such fear in Alex that he is constantly afraid to do a lot of things, even when Tracht actually allows it or doesn't punish him for it. I think it was when Alex saved his life the first time he began to possibly fall in love or grow possessive of him. There was some things he did say that were true, like about his brother being manipulative. I don't get why he wanted Alex to be knowledgeable about the ship and other things he probably would have learned in school, but I appreciate the fact that he did that even if everything he does is just for his personal reasons. I believe that maybe part of the reason he is the way he is with wanting to be in control, turned on by the pain/discomfort of others, is because of his past relationships, but mainly with Dimitri. I think Dimitri had used Tracht for his connections, his money, and for intimacy, which is why during the massage scene he ended up getting mad because Alex was pretty much doing the same thing. Alex is contracted to Tracht because of his debt and is only going through everything Tracht puts him through because of it. Tracht had most likely briefly forgotten about it until Alex had asked to get off that he remembered, got mad at Alex and probably himself as well since he most likely doesn't want to be hurt again like he was in the past, and then punished Alex unreasonably for what had happened. By the end of the book he pretty much knows he has Alex's loyalty, even though I'm not sure he deserves it. I hated the fact that he was willing to go back on the contract he had with Alex multiple times, such as when Alex got in the fight that he didn't even start, the piercing (even though Alex was willing to do it to get back on Tracht's good side, but he still shouldn't have had to do it), the mistreatment he suffered from ( in the beginning, he was more into women than men, and Tracht basically forced himself on him day after day. It was also clear that he didn't like a lot of the things that was done to him), and the one major but temporary body mod he did on Alex's chest which I don't even know if it went back to normal or not when it was supposed to. Despite everything, I guess this was an interesting book, I just wish everything had been consensual.

I don’t know what I was expecting but I loved that. It was hard to get through in the beginning (not because of triggers or anything but generally cuz I was bored and didn’t see how this was turning into a romance). But about 56% in I was locked in. Watching Alex try to realize things was truly poetic. Him defining his friendships and relationships with the people around him. The experiences that molded him and made him particularly vulnerable to grooming. And even that one scene with Nick (you know which one)…literally had me in a lock. I would have loved a peek into the far future but I’m happy too with where it ended and was glad I got to finish it.

I had no idea what to expect from this book and downloaded it on a recommendation, and Oh My God! I'm so glad I did!!!
Alex sold himself to clear a debt his brother had incurred, bought my Tracht, the commander of a spaceship, a man that seems outwardly calm and professional, but Tracht has a kink that will not appeal to every reader but I found the interaction and the building of the two men's relationship so addictive. I really couldn't get enough of these two and read the book in one go. Dinner didn't get made that night!!
So, I say indulge yourself in some kink and the delightfully devious character and enjoy every line.
I read this on KU and immediately purchased it after reading it's definitely going to be on my re-read list.

Ok, this time I was surprised. I found honesty and beauty in a relationship that is all but healthy. Alex agrees to a sexual servitude contract in order to pay off a debt and his master reveals himself to be a sadistic, non-empathetic and brutal captain of an interstellar ship. Despite all this and the tribulations that are inflicted on Alex, Captain Tracht shows that a certain kind of cruelty can have on a personality more... ehmm ... (pass me the extreme term) "constructive effect" of manipulation disguised as affection.
Interesting reading for those who are already far beyond all that is...vanilla.

Here's what I loved about this book.
Kiiiiiiinnnnky in the best "perverted" (Alex's term) ever! I loved that although T caused A pain, humiliation, and he was totally disgusted by some of the stuff he did to him, A was able to give T his loyalty and possibly more. I love reading darker
books but I'm not a fan of when the one MC can't get into it at all. I loved seeing A cuddle T, lay his head on his thigh, and even initiate initmacy.
I'm excited to see where this series goes.

    Here's what I'm not a fan of.....****SPOILERS****
Rape scenes for me, even as revenge are a nope, straight up nope! The incest, sure whatever, the actual non-con, nope!
I know T did stuff to A that he didn't care for but he signed up for those, so to me that's different. Although, withholding and the threat to withhold food rubbed me the wrong way.
I also didn't understand why the Parson's part went the way it did, seemed at odds with his character. But his daughter seemed supes annoying so good riddance.

Loved this book but definitely pay attention to author warnings about possible triggers!

I honestly don't know what to think of this book. There were so many times I was ready to DNF it, even had to stop once to cry (to be fair, it's been a while since I cried and I think literally everything could have gotten to me). But somehow I kept going.

This is a book of trigger warnings, and if you can't handle reading about grooming I suggest you don't even start it. I might have finished this book, but the jury is still out on whether or not I will manage to finish the series - part of me wants to just for the sake of knowing how it ends. I guess we'll see.
