Janelle Harris penned her first story on scented, unicorn-shaped paper. She was nine. A couple of decades, one husband, five children, two cats and a dog later Janelle wrote another story. My Rationalization:

What a read that was of definitely one psychological, mystery-thriller with suspense that will keep you turning the pages to see what was coming now and then where we find the heroine [Susan] and the flashbacks. These flashbacks had to do with the death of Susan's twin brother, Adam dying on their 21st birthday, her mother who was very distant to her, friends, neighbors and most of all the person that had killed her brother.

The story may have been a slow start but I will say by the end of this novel I was blown away with all of the unexpected twists, turns and ride this author took the reader on. After reading the entire novel I thought of this story as a two-part story that wonderfully comes together by the end of the read as the author brings in the 'now and then' of the story chapters.

I will say I was left in awe of it all when the story does come together leaving one to wonder just how far one would go to take revenge against a person that had wronged them. Be ready for a little bit of it all from friendship, motherhood to a crazy person with a few more plot surprises that will also come out.

The storyline was quite intriguing along with some really interesting characters development with some being simple to complex in the unexpected behaviors and actions they displayed. All in all, I did find the story rather believable and well-written that would definitely keep your interest in the read because almost any time one reads about a missing child it becomes of great need to know the outcome as this author will give it all to the reader in "Under Lying." I will say in the epilogue that did surprise me however, I was left feeling that it was best for the child who raised her. Now, to get it all you must pick up this good read to see how well this author delivers an unforgettable story to the readers.

I downloaded this book as one of Amazon's free monthly First Reads and did find the story rather interesting.

I chose to read this because some of the reviews were horrible, some were really good. There seems to be a love it or hate it with this one. I thought it was okay. I certainly didn’t have the problems the reviewer who only read the “look inside” had. (Don’t judge an entire book by just a few chapters!) The actions that the character describes are to let you into the scene, and mind, of the story and character. I didn’t feel it was too much. You’re going to have that in a first person view. So I dismissed that review pretty quickly. (I actually read the “look inside” myself and dismissed it, because I could see it was first person narrative and not annoying at all to me. When you read those chapters and understand what’s happening in context with the rest of the book, it all makes sense.)

On to the twists everyone talks about. The book is about a missing child. The twist is pretty obvious that she’s not missing, but the where/who was surprising. And no one is who they seem.

I really feel like this is a book that deals more with grief (there are years of grief counseling involved) and loss, and how that can affect your life and your mental health. I think that almost everyone in this book behaves the way they do due to grief, and how it shaped their life. I think there may be some seriously unhealthy mental well-being involved in every character’s actions. Every character. And when you start looking at things from that perspective, the things that don’t make sense, you can start to understand why.

I’m glad I read it. I’m definitely not willing to call it a psychological thriller. It’s thought provoking, however, if you’re able to understand where the characters are mentally.

I’d recommend it if you’re going into with an open mind, and are willing to take the characters as they are. Let the author lay them out to you and don’t make your own judgements about them. They develop slowly over the course of the book, and follow the path of grief with them. Then you’ll understand why you end up at the end.

This book took me by surprise several times. There are unexpected twists and turns that take you on a journey and you find yourself immersed in this clever story. Anyone who likes psychological thrillers will enjoy this book. It’s been a steady read, easy to pick up and put down, always knowing where you were in the story, but towards the end, I was about 70% through the book, I just had to carry on reading to the end. So here I am at 1.16am having just finished the book and now writing the review!

I was hooked as soon as I started this book. Susan and her husband Paul are not long in their new home and what should be a nice housewarming to get to know their neighbours better, ends up being every parents worst nightmare.

My heart went out to Susan as her relationship between herself and her husband starts to deteriorate and she is left to fall on the goodwill of her new neighbour.

It’s hard to know what to say about this book as everything definitely isn’t as it seems. The story flicks between Susan’s past and present which gives us more insight into what life was like before she met Paul, as well as how they are coping with the disappearance of their daughter.

My opinions kept swapping through out the novel about certain characters. As more lies and secrets unravel, I was getting more and more gobsmacked trying to take it all in. Towards the end just sent my head in an absolute spin. It had me racing through the pages as the author really messed with my head as to how this was all going to end. Admittedly I did have to suspend my belief with a couple of things but then it is a work of fiction after all and it didn’t spoil my enjoyment.

Under Lying raises the question of how well we really know someone. It had me go through so many emotions as well as had my heart racing with the amount of twists and turns the author threw at me. I loved how the author gently drew me in and could never have guessed the thrill fest that was awaiting me the further in I got. If you like a book that will hook you from the go and doesn’t let you go until you have reached the last word, then this is the one for you.

I'm writing this about half way through, when i've discovered the main twist. Sorry, but this is so implausible to be almost ludicrous. The police would have been all over this with a fine-toothed comb, including <spoiler alert>the parents' backgrounds.
A good idea, very well written. I liked the way the story went from present to past. The <spoiler alert> murder to cover tracks? Not quite buying that either, i'm afraid.
The first book i've read of this author; more than good enough to give another of her books a read.
