Unforgettable: A Small Town Second Chance Sports Romance: Cloverleigh Farms, Book 5 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 out of 5 stars 11,320 ratings

Back then, I had it all.

Wicked fastball. Killer instinct. Cocky grin. Full package.

(And believe me, I knew how to score.)

My senior year, I was a first round draft pick with a two-million-dollar signing bonus. Before I could even legally buy myself a beer, I made my Major League debut.

Point is, I was invincible.

Until one day I wasn’t.

After tanking my career - during the World Series, no less - the last thing I want to do is return to my hometown, where every jerk in a ball cap has an opinion about what went wrong with my arm. So when my sister drags me back to town for her wedding, I vow to get in and out of there as quickly as possible.

Then I run into April Sawyer.

In high school we were just friends, but I’d always wanted her, and I’d never forgotten her - the red hair, the incredible smile, the crazy, reckless thing we did in the back of my truck the night we said goodbye. It’s been 18 years, but one look at her and I feel like my old self again. I can still make her laugh, she can still take me down a notch, and when the chemistry between us explodes, it’s even hotter this time around - and I don’t want it to end.

But just when I think I’m ready to let go of the past and get back in the game, life throws me a curveball I never saw coming.

April and Tyler's Story is a NECESSARY One
5 out of 5 stars
April and Tyler's Story is a NECESSARY One
Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ At first glance, there is a seeming simplicity to Melanie Harlow’s storytelling. In looking at the Cloverleigh Farms series, you find this family of characters who love, trust, and care for each other to the edges of their beings. Five women with five different stories, yet the thread of family and hope runs deep through all of them. This is the tie that binds all of the stories together, and nothing in this series best illustrates the truth of the Sawyer family than Harlow’s newest book, Unforgettable. Yes, it would be easy to reduce this book to its trope: second chance romance. Yes, it would be simple to say it’s a story about two people needing to let go of their pasts in order to set upon a journey into the future. Yes, I could further reduce it to a grumpy, disillusioned hero and an emotionally-gripping, intelligent heroine who complete each other to their very depths. Unforgettable holds all of these characteristics and more. Yet, the essence of Unforgettable, the heart of it, lies in the depth of family. This book above any of the other ones, I think, cuts the deepest in showing the power of family to love, sacrifice, and empower. Unforgettable beautifully articulates the message of adoption and its ability to bring people together. For me, this book became my favorite Cloverleigh Farms story because it takes hurt people and heals their wounds through the unbreakable spirit of family. I refuse to give the secrets of this book away to the readers. What I want to note is Harlow’s ability to craft these exquisite stories that reflect the human spirit. In Unforgettable, April and Tyler need to “let go” of their pasts in order to move forward. While April has achieved professionally, her personal life feels meted out in tiny moments. She seems suspended yet ready to move forward to find love. For Tyler, professionally and personally, his life has been derailed. He has lost his purpose and sense of self. Like April, he needs to examine and move beyond his past so that he can find new professional and personal purpose. With the help of family and their own profound connection, April and Tyler allow love to move them forward away from the hurts and disappointments of their pasts. The depth of this message relates to any of us who have felt trapped, disillusioned by change, or disappointed. In April and Tyler, Harlow helps us see the ways we intersect with their stories and encourages us to move forward, letting family and love guide our way forward. Harlow’s storytelling draws you in. When I began Unforgettable, I had been impatient to start it. April and Tyler’s life choices are powerful ones. It isn’t that the other books in the series aren’t. However, April’s sacrifice illustrates the capacity to love beyond yourself. As their journey progresses, you simply cannot set this book aside. You need Tyler to determine that he is more than baseball; you need April to move past her guilt, and you need these two to realize their souls’ connection. As Harlow crafts moments of dissension and chemistry and humor, you simply need more. Once I began, there was absolutely no stopping my read. And in the end, Harlow’s epilogue brings the sweetest of moments. When I finished Unforgettable, I already felt nostalgic for the stories of the Sawyers. In giving us April and Tyler’s ultimate happy ending which offers a Tyler who is finally complete in himself, an April who has been blessed beyond measure for her sacrifice, and a family that exudes love, you can’t help but wish there were more Sawyers. There is something sweet that whispers through Melanie Harlow’s writing. While the idea of “family” is the foundation of the Cloverleigh Farms series, it is really Harlow’s care and quietude in her writing voice that impresses. It’s the reason that so many of us need more of her books. Unforgettable is no different. Second chance, small-town romance with a grumpy hero confounded by life and a self-reflective, intelligent heroine ready for more for herself might not be your thing. If it isn’t, then it should be.

I'm glad I read this for myself before I read some of the reviews. I mean, I get what irritated them about Tyler (and even April) but I honestly do think this story is plausible, at least.

I'm hiding the rest of my review because I don't want to worry about spoilers - personally, I don't mind reading them but this way other readers can choose for themselves. I really liked this story a LOT.

    Sweet Scale: 4/5
    Spicy Scale: 3/5

    POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW:

April had a crush on Tyler in high school, but they had a friends relationship. She knew he was leaving, so when they "got together" on his last night in town, she knew that was likely to be the only time she ever got to be with him. She also understood his drive for baseball, and how far it was likely to take him in life.

But - when she found out she was pregnant at 18, she had a choice to make, and she chose adoption. She did tell Tyler, and agreed with him to not name him as the father. This is maybe the only slightly implausible part of the story for me, but I decided not to care about it.

18 years later, April is in therapy, wondering why she can't let anyone close enough to have a real, loving relationship. She's carried guilt for years for hiding her secret from everyone except a very few members of her family. She finally reaches a point where she feels like she wants to reach out to her son.

Tyler's back in town for his sister's wedding, and they reconnect. They get closer, and they get something that might even look like closure when they finally talk about him leaving when she was pregnant, and falling completely out of touch after that. In the wake of his failed baseball career, he still thinks he wants nothing to do with his biological son - and he has a right to feel that way. He's supportive of April's decision to reach out, but he's concerned about rabid reporters and negative press.

When he learns that not only did April hear from the adoptive family about the identity of their son, but that he's actually been coaching him for the last week or so, he over-reacts (badly) and leaves again. Because he still hasn't figured out what he has to offer anyone in life, if he isn't a baseball hero.

In a touching hospital visit to his high school coach and mentor, the light finally dawns. He finally realizes that baseball wasn't the thing that gave his own father's life meaning and direction, it was home and family.

Aside from the subject matter, I also liked that Tyler and April always REALLY talked to each other about their feelings (even if Tyler denied he had anything going on deep in his mind and heart most of the time). They didn't break up and get back together because of a teen pregnancy. They made a decision to give a baby a loving home, and they both got on with their lives. They had a blip in their second chance, but once Tyler realized that baseball wasn't "home", that home was actually about friends and family and who you love, rather than just a place you live, then they did get their happy ever after.

I liked this book. I won't judge anyone who didn't read past the first few chapters, but there was a lot going on and I think it was well-written. It wasn't a laugh out loud fun read, but it was a lovely story and deeply meaningful.

    Unforgettable: ★ ★ ★ ★

    Melanie Harlow (Cloverleigh Farms, #5)

“Wherever you are is home to me. And I don’t want to leave home again.”

Ex-baseball star Tyler Shaw shows up at his hometown for his sister’s wedding, knowing he’s going to run into the one woman he’s always been crazy about—and the one who holds a whole lot of his history.

Oh Melanie you never do me wrong. I was super hesitant to read this one in the series because I didn’t like the tropes, but I was so wrong! This was so good, and honestly probably one of my favorites in this series (if not the favorite.)

Tyler is a “grumpy” (not really), cocky ex-baseball player who has been really down on his luck and April’s a wedding planner who has been hiding a secret from almost everyone—the baby she had eighteen years ago.

When she decides to reconnect with her child in the same week Tyler shows up, emotions run high as they balance their own romantic relationship and the one with their child. Not to mention, Tyler’s relationship with the media.

I really loved the relationship development between them, but I’m a sucker for “it was always you.” Tyler was—and always had been—a total goner for April and it was just precious!

The plot twist & third act conflict are pretty predictable but it’s still really cute nevertheless. And she makes him work for his mess up of colossal proportions, which he does happily and we love that. This book is also a little less spicier than the other ones, just to keep in mind!

This series really means a lot to me and I’m so sad that I’m done with the backlist. I absolutely love Melanie Harlow & will read anything by her, though, so I can’t wait for everything she has coming our way soon in this series and all the others!

I loved this second chance healing romance. It had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, deep emotions, painful pasts. and spice. April works as the event planner at Cloverleigh Farms, her family’s hotel, winery, distillery and event business,. She is dealing with painful parts of her past and wants a husband and kids. Tyler was a Major League Baseball pitcher until his arm stopped working. Now he struggles with anger and what he’s supposed to do with his life. April and Tyler knew each other in HS as friends and April babysat Tyler’s younger sister, Sadie. They also shared one steamy night which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy and the baby was put up for adoption. They reconnect when Tyler returns for Sadie’s wedding which April is planning. What follows the reconnection, is a wonderful and painful journey of baggage unpacking, inner voice finding, healing, and life realignment. The story was well written and included three dimensional characters who grow and an engaging storyline. I will miss these characters. 4.5 stars

I don't quite know how to put my emotions into words after finishing the last book in the Cloverleigh Farms series by Melanie Harlow, Unforgettable! I'm feeling a little sad (that it's over), complete because the last Sawyer sister has found her HEA (tough as it was), still a little annoyed with Tyler (there were MULTIPLE times while reading this book I wanted to smack some sense into him) but I eventually succumbed and fell in love with him too, complete and total admiration for April at just how strong, sweet, sensitive and sassy (ALL the S's!) she truly is and OMG I'm missing these characters so, sooooooo much!

From the first page to the last, this book engulfed me in ALL the feels! The chemistry between April and Tyler is OFF-THE-CHARTS and I simply couldn't get enough!!! It's THE most angsty and heart-wrenching of the series for reasons I can't get into (spoilers) but WOW!!! The way April and Tyler overcame the issues they were dealing with from the past and how everything was resolved make this book my FAVE in the series....and WHAT a way to end a series that I've so enjoyed! The rollercoaster ride to the end is EPIC and Ms. Harlow has finished this series PERFECTLY!

If you're looking for a story that ticks ALL the boxes that second-chance romances SHOULD tick then THIS is the story for YOU! I do recommend reading this series in order so that you get all the background into the Sawyer sisters, but you don't HAVE to in order to enjoy this AWEMAZING book! Once again, Ms. Harlow has hit a home run right outa the park with this TRULY Unforgettable read!!!
