Unreal: A McLain's Last Chance Book Kindle Edition
Samuel McLain is the most vain, self-absorbed man I've ever met.
That's saying something, because I'm an actor.
From the minute we meet at the movie set, he's under my skin.
It's not just his body I'm attracted to.
I know there's something under that perfect exterior.
But there's no time to find it out.
We're temporary, we've both agreed.
This is a one-time thing.
I'm leaving town for my next role soon.
It can't last.
No matter what I feel, it can't.
Samuel
Someday life is going to be as perfect as in my pictures.
Late afternoon on a tropical island, forever.
For now I'm stuck in a small town with small men doing small things.
Until superstar Devin walks into my life.
Suddenly I can dream again, even though I know he's not really mine.
All I have to do is hide my past and let him think I'm perfect.
Hide who I really am.
But when I'm around him I don't want to hide.
When I'm around him I want to be real.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSamuel is one of those McLain boys the folks in Rhodes love to talk about. Samuel loves to take pictures for his blog and dream of getting enough followers to finally get away from Rhodes.
They're making another movie in Rhodes. Samuel is lined up to meet and greet the stars and hope for a pic with Devin Adams. Devin's friends help get things going by inviting Samuel to the set.
Roy, Samuel's daddy, is leaning on him to testify to how he's a better man now and deserves to be paroled.
Samuel can't get a break, and he wants one with Devin so bad. With family and friends interfering on all sides he just wants out of Rhodes to never return. How on earth can he manage it all?
There's never a dull minute in Rhodes. I really enjoy the McLain's and Rhodes. I want to read Angel's story. I think it will be the most exciting of all. Through all of whatever's going on in Rhodes the family gets by and sticks together. Rachel Kane has another hit book in Unreal.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2019Format: KindleSamuel and Devin have several things against them. Family, a manager and at first each other.
But, once they stop letting others interfere they realize that they have something special to hold on to.
Both of the MCs are likable and the story is sweet.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is more a 4.5 stars because a few scenes were a but cheesy, but I gladly round it up because it's such an improvement over the last one. While Samuel & Devin both have diva qualities, their characters are developed and explored with the nuances that I have come to love from this author. They're not the most relatable for me personally, but they're likable and I can definitely empathize with them both.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA great story! It made me feel like I was reading a fairytale, not possible and then it was. Very well written and very well brought out. The story of Samuel and Devin is a story of love between a poor and beautiful man, and a handsome actor. The pressures against them is from all sides. Love won out.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnly made it a quarter of the way through but...I just didn't like it. The writing itself wasn't bad, but there was nothing keeping me interested in either character. And still no steamy scenes to entice me either. Wouldn't recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019Format: KindleTrue to Ms Kane form this book does not, in any way, disappoint. Returning to familiar grounds we revisit Rhodes where we meet up with old friends, the McLain boys. Samuel and his family have a reputation of being the “white trash, troubled family”. Devin, just the opposite, famous actor in town to make a film. Their “no strings” situation is hard not to love. This story falls into place in this series, nicely. It shows vulnerability and moments of hopelessness where you can feel Samuel’s turmoil. You get a sense of his feelings of being trapped in a life and a place he doesn’t feel he can tolerate anymore. It would be impossible to say that tears didn’t fall at some point. His struggles, his need to support his family and his warring within over his responsibilities to his father were emotionally charged and held you captive. Finally, our heroes get their HEA and, finally, all is right in their world. This author has an ability to create characters so life like it’s difficult, at times, to separate them from real to fiction. Her ability to engage the reader, so completely, is a talent. Once again, I felt drawn in and captivated by the story and the people. Another fantastic addition to this author’s long list of accomplishments. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2019Format: KindleLike another reviewer noted - the writing was pretty good but had nothing to hold my interest. In fact, I actively disliked Devin. Other than a few small proofreading errors and a couple misused phrases, the writing was decent. If it wasn’t for Devin’s obnoxiously ignorant opinions and whining I might have liked it. But even then, there wasn’t much of a plot. By about 30% nothing had happened other than a lot of chitchat and background information. I gave up once it was obvious the book was a waste of good reading time for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2019Format: KindleUnreal, Book 3 in the McLain's Last Chance series is Samuel's story. Samuel dreams of being famous, of being an influencer. When he meets Devin Adams, the wildly famous actor, Samuel thinks this could be the break he needs. But duty to his family pulls hard on Samuel.
Devin wants to be taken seriously as an actor. He's certain this romance movie he's filming now, isn't the way to get respect, but he has to pay the bills some how. Devin doesn't want anything more than a filming location fling with Samuel. Devin is convinced love isn't for a man like himself.
I've enjoyed getting each brothers back story. Samuel comes off as shallow and narcissistic in the 2 previous stories. Now we get to see what has shaped Samuel into the man he is. It's sooooo good. I love the way the author crafted this story. It was gripping, touching and a bit tragic. Even though it's part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone, but why deprive yourself of 2 other brilliant stories.
