Micah Hudson and Jude MacMillian were both lonely teenagers. One the new kid and one the target of relentless bullying, they quickly became friends. A decade later, Micah is on the brink of losing his will to live. Beyond exhausted from lying to everyone, including himself, Micah thinks of the one person who knows his deepest secret. Desperate and alone, Micah makes the only decision he feels he has: he must leave. But his need for closure depends on one thing.

About the author

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it's been a dream.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017Unsteady was a deeply emotional book for me. It touches on an issue near and dear to my heart and I’m going to take a minute and touch on it right now: suicide. Suicidal ideations, to be exact. Micah speaks about how much easier it is to die rather than keep waking up each morning and he is not alone in those thoughts, especially as a veteran. United States veterans commit suicide at a rate of 22 per day, one every 65 minutes, nearly double the rate of civilian suicides. We can’t stand idly by while the people who’ve risked so much for our country are battling a war inside of their own minds. If you know anyone, veteran or not, who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, help them find support.
I loved this book, for so many reasons, the biggest part of which was Micah. His struggles and self-loathing called out to my heart and made me want to just hold him and comfort him until all he could remember was what being loved for exactly who he was felt like. As much as Jude had struggled with accepting who he was and learning to live with the things he’d lost, I always felt like he had a far better handle on how to cope with the struggles he faced. Micah appeared to have everything a person could need for most of his life but once we glimpsed beneath the surface it was painfully obvious everything he had was nothing more than a façade. And to me it is far lonelier, far more upsetting to have those things at your fingertips and not be able to touch them, than it is to know the things you need are no longer available to you.
The flashbacks to Micah and Jude’s time together when they were in high school are what made this book so great, to me. Seeing those struggles, realizations, and heartbreaks first hand, rather than having them recounted in other ways let me understand more the hesitance and fears they experienced in the present day scenes. There were a few more scenes I would have loved to have fleshed out in that way, but I know that I would never be satisfied that I had enough of Micah and Jude. Both of their love stories, past and present, touched me in different ways and I am glad to have been able to experience each of them.
I love M/M, especially when done well, and Melissa did a great job with Unsteady. The vulnerability she demonstrated in both of men, especially Micah made this book for me. There is a fine line to skate between making emotionally charged, vulnerable male characters and still keep them powerful and masculine that makes a M/M romance so special to me, and she definitely did it in Unsteady. I am also impressed with how she dealt with important social issues experienced by both gay men and veterans. If Ms. Collins continues to write with the poignancy and intensity of Unsteady I can only see he rising through the ranks of my must read authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017After reading the first two books in this series, and investing so much love in Dax and Beck, I wasn't so sure about Micah. He didn't thrill me in Higher Ground, especially when I feared he might have tried to come in between Dax and Beck. Now that I have ready Unsteady, he makes more sense to me now, and how he was in the previous book. I enjoyed the story, and really loved Jude. The beginning began a little slow for me with building up the story and laying it all out, I get that, but it also took many chapters until we really got down to what was troubling Micah. At least to the point of including Jude, and sharing his past with him. The intimate scenes between the two men were beautiful and well written. Over all, this was a good story and I loved how it all concluded in the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017Friends to lovers, second chance romances and hurt/healing are some of my favorite tropes. Unfortunately, in this book those were overshadowed by a few things I don’t like.
Since most of this review is going to sound negative I want to start by saying that Jude and Micah are definitely meant to be together. They are clearly soul mates and I love the emotions between them when all the other BS isn’t getting in the way.
The first issue I have with the book is miscommunication causing angst. In this book, the miscommunication led to two lifetimes of being miserable as well as negatively affecting a couple of innocent bystanders. I can’t go into details without spoiling the story but Jude believing someone who continuously lied and mistreated him over Micah whom he loved, trusted and was loved by didn’t work for me. Why would Jude believe his lying ex-friend over his current boyfriend who loved him? And that led them both down really long, painful paths.
The second problem I have with the book is also a bit spoilery read at your own risk.
[ I won’t read books with cheating. I don’t like it and I don’t want to read stories with it. While I understand Micah was in the depths of despair and thought his only way out was seeing Jude, he left his wife and child with no explanation. And then he cheated on his wife repeatedly and formed a loving relationship with Jude; and didn’t tell Jude about his wife and child until 80% into the book. He made Jude the unwilling secret affair. I honestly probably wouldn’t have read this book had I known this was going to happen.]
The hurt/healing was only ok for me. Jude started the healing process with his father but most of that happened off page even though the negative effects of that relationship were a big part of his hurt. Micah obviously had been through some form of therapy but at rock bottom he relied on Jude to heal which ended up causing even more angst.
Another issue I had was the rushed ending. Until about 80% we had a pretty long, detailed story. In the remaining 20% we had a ‘jumping the shark’ moment and everything from there on is wrapped up in a neat bow.
[ After Micah discovered that Jude is what made him happy and he did the right thing with Delilah he STILL refused to reach out to Jude. All of that and he was just going to give up? Really? ]
Even with my issues, I think the writing was as good here as in the first two books. If you can deal with the issues I’ve listed above, you will probably enjoy this book. It’s just not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read
This was a fun second chance romance, but one that had a darker side relating to Micah's PTSD and depression. With the alternating POV you see him go through some darker thoughts, including survivors guilt as well as some suicidal themes. That said, it is not deeply explored and the general tone of the book is one of hope and new beginnings.
The story alternates between the past and present, as well as between POV for Micah and Jude. We get the snippets of them in their late teens where they first meet and form a bond. Sadly pressures push them apart and it isn't until 10 years later that Micah goes looking for Jude to try and get some closure and find himself again. This is where those darker themes and thought processes come in, as Micah isn't in a good place.
The storyline progresses smoothly, but I found some of the themes, such as homophobia and bigotry in the Texas town they're in, were glossed over rather than being explored in detail. That said, it was good to see all of the plotlines closed out, including with Jude's father.
The ending wasn't quite what I expected but was well rounded and on a very positive note - especially for Micah's mental health and reintegration into society.
I like this authors writing style and look forward to reading more of her works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long Drive to Love
A very pleasant read with enough warmly portrayed hot sex. Although I knew the lads would end up happy it's always fun getting there.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful romance
A beautiful romance between two long lost best friends (M/M romance)
Both Micah and Jude have hidden feelings between each other as teenagers they are trying to find where they fit in but they find solace in other, they have a brief romance before they graduate and it all goes to hell fast track 10 years a wife, son and a military career later and Micah is in a dark place the only way he sees out of it is to search for the love of his life the only person that can help him see the light.
This book is written in dual POV from both past and present. I'm not usually into past and present books but I found I quiet liked this as it didn't go off track and get lost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy.
I'm always happy to read a story that has heart.Jude and Micah go through rough times as teens, and due to ptsd Micah needs sense in his world.in the form of his heart,Jude. Sometimes in life your soul mate is just waiting until the fates tell you it's time to love.this is the story of making it through the day with love and trust holding your hand.
