The Utopia Chronicles (Atopia Book 3) Kindle Edition
Robert Baxter once reveled in the intoxicating delights of Atopia—the man-made island where humans lose themselves in a world of boundless virtual realities. Now, Bob has returned to immerse himself in this mind-altering, consciousness-sharing refuge from the eroding Earth.
But something is very wrong. Bob feels a tidal wave of doom cresting above the pleasure dome that is Atopia. As alternate universes perish, the salvation of all he loves—and all that exists—rests with Bob alone. To save the future, he must journey to the farthest edge of the past, where existence itself began and Atopia's deepest secrets may lie. Yet even the knowledge Bob ultimately gains may not be a match for an enemy as powerful as a god, and as all-consuming as death…

About the Author
After earning a degree in electrical engineering, Matthew Mather started his professional career at the McGill Center for Intelligent Machines. He went on to found one of the world's first tactile-feedback companies, which became the world leader in its field, as well as creating an award-winning brain-training video game. In between, he's worked on a variety of start-ups, from computational nanotechnology, electronic health records, and weather prediction systems to genomics and social-intelligence research. In 2009, the original inspiration for his technology career—reading the great masters of science fiction—set him on a new path. The result was the bestselling Atopia series, including The Atopia Chronicles, The Dystopia Chronicles, and The Utopia Chronicles. He is also the author of the Nomad novels, Nomad and Sanctuary, as well as Darknet and CyberStorm, the latter soon to be a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox. He divides his time between Montreal, Canada, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just finished the 3rd entry in the “Atopia” sequence and I had a great time. The first two entries were excellent stories, “Atopia’ specifically drove me to pick up other books by Mather. Once I read “Cyberstorm” and “Darknet” I knew I had found an author I could relate too and I have read everything since.
To begin, “Utopia” is a great read. And, let me add, mind-blowing. I appreciated that Mather included a summary of prior events at the beginning. I could tell from the first few pages this story was going to be good. The opening introduces us to a completely new character/story line. It’s up to us to figure out how it relates to the story we know. References to other story arcs and other book really make the entire story arc feel really full and complete. The story starts just prior to the end of “Atopia” with the hurricanes approaching the Atopia platform. We see key events and experiences from the previous books, but this time from Bob’s viewpoint. Bob begins to question reality and meets a ‘dark figure’ who puts Bob on a path of discovery. Bob goes on a hunt for answers and takes a piece of Sid with him. Together, the path Bob and Sid take to discover the truth is wild to say the least. Moving from timeline to timeline, universe to universe they search for answers. The hunt takes billions of years and billions of lifetimes Along the way we meet various characters from the story in previous times and learn about how things came about and converged on the Atopian technologies. Mather has a unique way of shifting the story between timelines. One chapter ends one thread and the next chapter begins another but, the story stays continuous.
As I read these story and follow all that is happening, I remember back to the previous books and how this story interleaves with those books. It really brings it all back together. So much so, that I will begin a marathon of re-reading the entire “Atopia” sequence as well as “Cyberstorm” (because it is kind of Book 0 in the sequence). I do not know if there will be any follow on Atopia stories, “Utopia” really did feel like putting it all to rest. But if this universe is re-opened, I will be ready to accept what it delivers.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, any of Mather’s books would make awesome productions: TV Series, Mini-Series, TV Movie or Full Feature Hollywood movie. Amazon has a great opportunity to make some very interesting stuff with this author. “Atopia” would make a wonderful multi-season TV series on Amazon Video. Come on, Amazon.. You can do it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis series is not for the feint of heart, especially the first two books so many things and characters could be hard to follow it all. Just as complex in book 3&4 but it's like meeting20 people at once at a party and trying to keep names and stories straight...a lot easier when you already know 75% of them....how he even thought of the concept is something
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLike the previous books of this series, is impossible to put down once you started reading. Unfortunately, the end can be gleaned from about half way going and it was frankly, a disappointing cliche. Still, it is worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUtopia was a truly amazing work
I read Atopia and Dystopia 2 years ago and liked them a lot. Somehow I forgot to read Utopia - until last week. And, WOW, it was my best book experience ever so far.
The ease with which Mather conveys Bob as a billion year conductor of endless parallel simulated or real universes, where he took over his own character, were taken over by his shadow, ended simulations, thus being the destroyer of universes he was pursuing... made me feel honored to get to take part of his story-telling.
In fact, WHILE I was reading the second half of Utopia I was filled with incredible joy, appreciation, and anticipation at the thought of re-reading the book, in order to more fully grasp the grandness of the scale of Bob's enterprise and the author's imagination.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis novel follows Bobby, one of the characters from the two previous novels.
Utopia is a pretty mind bending novel. Bobby travels and manipulates the many meta worlds and multiverse timelines to achieve his ends (think of Inception but on a much grander scale). There's kind of a lot to unpack here, and in fact I'm still thinking about much of it and the nature of reality, how we make reality and how we perceive reality. This sounds like science fiction, but actually there is a lot of real physics behind this idea. Think of it like this: perhaps the particular mathematical structure that makes up our universe isn't the only option, and in fact all possible mathematical structures exist as their own separate universes.
The entire Atopia series, while not always perfect, has given me a lot to think about, as good science fiction should. There are some really big questions here.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Utopia Chronicles (Atopia, #3) by Matthew Mather
Each book in this series has been incredible! And this conclusion does a great job too! The first book was a fast paced look at at a possible, near future based upon high technology and artificial realities. The second book takes that as a base, then further develops the characters, and various themes, by mixing in some varied metaphysics and such. This last book takes us into a very logical conclusion.
The characters are quite well developed by now, but still capable of surprising us, and themselves, along the way. As fast paced as the book is, it is also very well crafted. The issues and questions that Bob is dealing with really are the ultimate questions of one's entire existence. But Bob's existence is set upon a rather more grand scope than mine or your's.
So yes, you need ot read this book to see which set of dimensional umultiverses the story goes thru...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe first part of this series was intriguing. The second part was a little boring, but still interesting. The third part-I wanted it to hurry up and end. Quite disappointing.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell, this book is not as good as the second one. It was quite confusing again but somehow I was kind of expecting the end will be that Bob will find himself as the center of it all. And I was right.
That said, I was expecting a more of a surprising plot than this. But, it’s not my story to tell, it’s Bob’s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did not see the story turning this way
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFinal conclusion took a somewhat unexpected turn. If book one and two set the scene for a future, this one takes it a magnitude higher using the same technology but now we see a larger picture. Maybe leaves a loose end regarding the motivation for distracting Vince and what was infecting Jimmy in book one/two but a great series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Existential.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI worked my way through this but it was pretty much over my head. I sort of get it but probably not the whole picture. I loved the rest of the series though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complicated but enjoyable
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was interested to see how the story went after reading the previous books. This book has a very complex plot, so I'm currently on my second read-through to try and make more sense of it.
I'd initially downloaded the sample to see how things were but it was taken up with the plot resumes of Books 1 & 2 so was a total waste of time. I would suggest future editions put this part as an appendix at the back.
I'm not sure I was that happy with the conclusion of the book but I might feel differently when I get there again.
If you liked books 1 & 2 this will give you the same futuristic technology, but you'll have to pay attention because it flicks back to the times of the previous books and millennia before and after.
I'd certainly be interested to read more of Matthew Mather's work.
