The Vaccine Strikes Back (The Pandemic Diaries) Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

It's January 2021 and the UK government has announced another lockdown. Follow Aunt Sheila as she cooks, drinks, binge watches everything and waits for the pubs to open.
Will the vaccine roll out, masks and working from home send covid on it's way? Join Aunt Sheila and her daily thoughts in this funny little diary. Hurry up bloody 'Freedom Day'.

24 March Jab day – hurrah! Had a shower and put on my off-the-shoulder top. Walked to the Community centre which is now our local vaccine centre. Dammit Janet was on the door squirting everyone with hand sanitizer, she looked off her head. A nice Indian doctor went through all the side effects, then the nurse jabbed me. She admired my new top and told me to wait 15 mins in the waiting area. Everyone was watching The Chase and shouting out all the answers. Went home, took two paracetamols and a vodka shot.

25 March Can’t move my arm today, have a slight fever and a hangover. Shaz has been to have her eyes tested, she said the new young optician looked handsome even though she could only see his eyes and hair. She’s stalking him on the Internet now.

Sheila Patel was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK. She is the youngest of 7 children. Born into a traditional Punjabi family she went on to study Engineering at Leeds Polytechnic and John Moores University. She later obtained an MBA from the University of Liverpool.

After working at British Aerospace for several years, she became interested in working with young people and ran a successful training company in Liverpool city centre for over ten years.

She discovered her passion for writing later in life, having spent magical moments with her huge family and lovely nieces. She saw and experienced many things growing up in 70's Britain. Comedy and humour played a huge role in her life and she loved all the funny things that Indians do daily, to adapt to the British way of life.

Sheila and her family spent 2006/2007 working in Wuxi, China on a project involving bamboo!

This is the second book in this series I've read. Short stories centered on the pandemic and how changes happen every day. Lockdown is tough, but doable. Patel has woven humor throughout this novelette. Five stars.

Author Patel once again charms us with her latest take on lockdown memories in The Vaccine Strikes Back. We're given a bittersweet summary of the world events and decisions that forever changed our lives, infused with a huge dose of humor. You'll laugh, you'll smile, and perhaps give a cringe or two as the diary days roll out.

The memories of this unique moment in time are captured for eternity, or at least until the next plague hits. A fun read sure to make you chuckle and scratch your head. Thank goodness for the writers who manage to make us smile in the direst of times!

5.0 out of 5 stars A sparkling comedy read set in UK's second lockdown
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 16, 2022
If you're already a fan of The Magic Vodka Wardrobe series you won't want to miss this second pandemic diary. Covering another UK lockdown starting in January 2021, Sheila and the colourful characters from the wardrobe are back, and on top form. The writing sparkles and there were some real one-liner gems. The author links the top news stories with everyday activities in a way that makes the tedium and 'smallness' of everyone's lockdown lives a light-hearted read. I really enjoyed reliving the significant events – and realising there were plenty I had missed. This is finely observed comedy writing full of fun and pathos, and a real treat for fans of Ms Patel's series. If you're not yet familiar with the Vodka Wardrobe characters, this short read is a great place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pick-me-up for difficult times
Reviewed in France on March 5, 2022
Life in the times of COVID has entered its second year in Sheila Patel’s latest book. Just as we were all hoping it had gone away, the plague came back with a vengeance, adding new variants to its arsenal. But this time there’s a mighty weapon to rally the hopes of a battered population – the vaccine has arrived, and it’s striking back! Aunt Sheila is impressed–the new Oxford AstraZeneca is not only cheap: ‘You can store it in a fridge next to the beers.’
There’s the mainstream media version of how the planetary battle raged during the first six months of 2021. Or there’s the alternative version, which is more selective, sometimes moving, often hilarious, thanks the intrepid, incorrigible narrator, noting it all in her diary.
Starting with Trump’s last stand, our favourite Auntie keeps us abreast of what is happening in Bradford and the World through her classic stand-up comedy style– dead pan narration with a wallop at the end of every sentence. As another lockdown bites, first one to rally to the call of the government is Rajeev in his caravan, offering pet goat Joginder as a dead-Christmas-tree -muncher now that the municipal tip is closed to the public. (You don’t hear about that on Sky news, do you?) The glitterball is gathering dust, the nation reduced to watching ‘a Badger singing a Nirvana song’ on Saturday night TV. Educational standards are in freefall with children a year behind in their reading and writing (though they have learned ‘how to make bread and order stuff from Amazon’). Mount Etna has erupted and the disgraced health Secretary has resigned (though ‘you have to admire a man who can preside over 100 000 deaths yet still be able to get an erection’).
Fortunately Sheila has a new coping mechanism that gets her through to Freedom day:
‘Did prayer hands, lit incense and had a vodka shot.’
A treat to read, as usual and a pick-me-up for difficult times. Readers might like to keep Sheila’s coping mechanism in mind ready for the next thing to hit the planet…

This book is a quirky, laugh out loud, day by day diary of the 2021 lock down and the roll out of the various Covid vaccinations. The recollections of the highs and lows that took place had me chuckling from start to finish and reminded me of of my own experiences during that lock down. Highly recommended.
