- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020Another fast moving thriller that reveals the true character and nature of Maya Raines. A must read! Once you start you won't put it down!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2019It starts off a bit slow but had to get you into the story in the proper order. This book is filled with action and has twists that keep you reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2018Vengeance brings an exciting, page-turning series to an end---but is it really the end? John Ling has taken his readers for an incredible, highly believable roller coaster ride through the first three books in the series (Fallen Angel, The Blasphemer and Rebellion), as the reader follows Maya Raines and her friend and co-CIA agent Kendra Shaw through strife-filled Malaysia. Each book can be read as a satisfying stand-alone story, but the reader will obviously get a better feel of the characters by reading them all, preferably in order. These (including Vengeance) are not the usual cookie-cutter spy/adventure novels that many other authors churn out. Maya and Kendra are well-developed female CIA special agents working in an environment specifically hostile to women, which makes their jobs especially difficult. John Ling crafts both the characters and the situations they encounter with a skill that immediately draws the reader into each book, and keeps the reader turning pages until the end---at which time the reader looks for the next one! While Mr. Ling now lives in New Zealand, he was born and raised in Malaysia, and that familiarity shows in every scene and nuance of the Raines and Shaw stories. I emphasize all four books in the series simply because leaving any of them unread would mean the reader had missed a portion of what I feel is a larger "story in four parts". While Vengeance is certainly an exciting read by itself, it also brings to a totally satisfying conclusion an underlying issue that drives Maya Raines from the beginning---the need to find her father's murderer. Vengeance won't disappoint you in the least, but reading the three novels leading up to it will leave you satiated as only a four-course meal in a fine restaurant does! I received an advance copy of Vengeance, and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2019John ling brings together his female protagonists for this fourth book in his black ops series. All the action you look for with memorable characters and a great plot.
Maya Raines and Kendra Shaw team up in Malaysia. They are on the trail of the sniper who killed Maya’s father. The team has a personal score to settle and they are out for blood.
With a lead on the man that killed her father, Maya’s team goes far off the books and plans an unendorsed op. They hire their own specialists to help out. They won’t let anyone stop them seeking justice.
Can they take down Malaysia’s most infamous sniper? He has been in hiding, moving from safe house to safe house with his family. Will he be found and brought to justice?
I was gifted the boxset that contains this novel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2018Maya hated walking into a trap, having a muslin head dress on, she continues. Now hearing a harsh Arabic language, anxiety is felt, could she get pass the check point, or detour around. Now a call telling her to go back they are testing her commitment. With heart pounding, as a reader, what does the author have in store for us. Bringing to mind, that others as she was, and the ground soldiers have gotten orders from someone above them. Testing them, and they were easily disposed if worse happened.
The covers are superb, giving us so many scenarios of what the story maybe about. The opening chapters have captured us once again. Given Arc for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2018This is the first book in this series that I have read, but it won't be the only one. John Ling writes great war/thriller books, but unusually a lot of his main characters are strong capable women. Another unusual aspect of this book is the setting, Malaysia, and terrorism and 'civil' war in that country.
The plot is quite involved and the central character, Maya has to work with a lot of characters, not all of whom are quite what they appear to be, but she needs to work with what she has to achieve her objective, hunting down the assassin who shot and killed her father.
Ultimately though she discovers that vengeance isn't always what it's cracked up to be, and she finds herself reacting in an unexpected way towards the man she had always believed to be a monster.
There is a lot of violence action in the book which is told in a very grittily realistic manner, reflecting the horror of war, but this is wrapped around a great story line involving well described and believable characters.
I received an advance copy of the book from the author, but have voluntarily written this review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2018Very enjoyable from the first page. I hadn't read the others in this series, but had no trouble following this one. And if this book is any indication of what I'll find in the other books, I'll read the others in this series right away.
The story features Maya Raines as a CIA operative with strong ties to Malaysia—and a tendency to go off the reservation. Her driving motivation is revenge for her father’s murder. Maya is tough but compassionate, and her nemesis, a Sunni operative named Jamal Sidek, is the most well-rounded character in the book. You’ll find many of the expected tropes here: the boss who both hates Maya’s rogue tendencies but loves her tenacity; the wisecracking team members; and the woman serving as Maya’s guide who she never quite trusts—but never quite mistrusts either.
The plot charges forward from the get-go: the threat of Maya being exposed at a checkpoint, a rooftop chase, a daring helicopter rescue—Ling puts the pedal to the metal from the first scene and doesn’t let up until the epilogue. It’s a page-turning, immersive book, and I couldn’t believe that I had finished the book so quickly when it was over. Definitely recommended.
