Veritas: An Enemies-to-Lovers Single Dad Romance (Truth and Lies) Kindle Edition
“There is no shame being on your knees,” I murmured. “We’re still equals even when we’re out of control, don’t you see that?”
From the bestselling author of Lies and Rain, A.L. Woods delivers a deliciously hot enemies-to-lovers single dad standalone romance set in the Reflections Universe...
I have more money than I know what to spend it on.
The power that comes with being a partner at a law firm.
A closet-full of tailored Brioni suits.
The ugly divorce.
A daughter I love more than life itself, even if I’m not sure she’s mine.
What I don’t have is her.
My queen of thorns.
Maria Tavares has the paralyzing effect of a black widow disguised as a femme fatale.
She’s brains and beauty, and has the audacity to f*ck around like a man without regard for feelings.
And she lives by the mantra, “hit it and quit it.”
Yours truly included.
After a one-night stand six months ago, I want my formidable rose—any way I can have her.
When she comes to me needing a favor, I’m quick with a proposition she can understand: an arrangement.
Three months.
All in. Strings attached. No interferences. Titles exchanged.
Mine.
In this battle of wills, Maria will discover that I know she needs to be handled with a firm hand.
Especially while she’s on her knees for me.

From the Author
She held back on something. I couldn't place it, but its presence was practically a corporeal thing that existed in the predacious energy circulating in the confined space. She rolled her shoulders, her head falling back as defeat clouded her features. I wanted to extract her confession. I wanted to know what man eviscerated her trust, who gifted her the chip on her shoulder. The crown of her superiority complex was tilted on its axis, each timed breath she took now a negotiation for control.
That's all Maria was ever fighting for, I realized—control.
I liked control, too. Preferred ascendency over anything else. You didn't get to where I was in life without it, but she's right. We lived in a society where it was inherently easier for me because I was a man and people respected that kind of thing from men—and she's a woman trapped in the social constructs she didn't belong in because gender norms were BS.
"No one hurt me." The declaration suspended between us; her features closed on her. And just like that, I recognized I'd lost her for the day. I wasn't mad about it, I expected that.
Dropping my head against her shoulder, my mouth found her ear once more, my bottom lip brushing against the diamond stud in her earlobe. "You're full of it."
I edged away from her, watching the dilation of her pupils, the shift in her breathing. Maria futzed with her dress, pulling it back into place, her lips pursing at the brush of fabric against her now bare skin. I studied her like she was a piece of art from the Louvre. She had the guise and mystery of the Mona Lisa, but the intensity of the La Belle Ferronniere—the unknown woman. She was an enigma, so hauntingly beautiful, her identity desperate to be discovered. I staved off the need to ravish her mouth, to smear that carnivorous shade of red painted on her too-full pout.
The elevator shuddered to life again, breaking the beguiling intensity of the moment as our journey to the parking garage began anew. I smiled, laughing through my nose, and stepping back. Cosmic intervention.
Maria moved with the alacrity of a projectile missile when the elevator doors rolled open, her heels eating at the paved cement, echoing in the parking garage. She was a good twenty feet away from me when her footfalls came to a sudden halt, her shoulders squaring.
"Jordan?" she called, pivoting on her heels. She chewed on her bottom lip, observing me. "What are you doing Saturday?"
I stuffed my hand in my pocket, running the pads of my fingers along the lace fabric I'd stolen from her. "What any good lawyer does on a Saturday." Worked. "Why?"
She nodded. "Never mind." Maria twirled her keys on her long fingers, pivoting in the opposite direction, her long legs striding with purpose toward a white BMW 328i.
"Tavares," I said, the acoustics of the garage projecting my voice, waylaying her. She regarded me from over her shoulder. "Why?"
Maria expelled a loud breath, her spine growing ramrod straight. "I wanted to know if you'd join me for a wedding in the Cape."
Well, that was pleasantly unexpected. Tilting my head in her direction, I smirked. "Are you asking me out, counselor?"
Her eyebrows hit her hairline. "N-no!" she sputtered. "I'm inviting you to a wedding as a..." She searched her vast lexicon for a term. "A favor." A favor? She blanched, stumbling for an alternative word. "As a colleague." Maria nodded her head, settling on that expression instead. "The food is being catered by some Michelin-five-star chef, and the venue is costing the bride's parents two-fifty. Yes, or no?"
She wanted to deny it was a date, that's fine. She could call it whatever she liked, because this was a start and she'd done it on her own terms—control, remember? I made a show of scratching the faint dusting of scruff on my chin, rocking my mouth from side to side with thought. "That's a bit of a drive."
I'd only been through the Cape once, at the highest point in a do-or-die attempt at salvaging my marriage with Catharine. That, of course, was before I realized there was a possibility Lana might... anyway.
"I've got a room booked already." Her nose scrunched up as though she'd tasted something unsavory. "If you want to accompany me, I'll get your accommodation sorted out."
I continued my performance—someone needed to award me an Oscar—crossing my arms over my chest as though considering it, but it was pure fanfare. We both knew I'd agree. "I'll attend as your date."
"It's not a date."
Drawing her undergarment out of my pocket, I spun it around on my finger before turning away from her. I heard the indignant sound leave her all the same. "I'll pick you up at nine AM on Saturday."
"Can you put those away?" she whisper-yelled. "And I'm leaving Friday morning. I'll forward you the venue details."
"Then I'll pick you up on Friday morning," I replied, stuffing the laced piece back into my pocket. I wasn't missing out on an opportunity to be trapped with her again.
"Fine." Maria nodded. "I'll text you my address."
"Night, Tavares."
I was getting my breakfast, come hell or high water.
And this time, it wouldn't be after one night only.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024What a book! The analogies, the topics and plot just wwoooww. A reread and will def read her other books.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2023There were lots of things that I liked about this book. I loved the character development of Maria AND Jordan’s characters. I really enjoyed the mistakes that they made and how they learned from them - that felt very real to me. And mature characters with careers and problems that I could relate to? I ate that up!
For some reason I cannot put my finger on, I skimmed occasionally between sections of dialogue. I’m not sure if this was a formatting thing (like if the paragraphs should not have been as big between sections of dialogue), or if it was too descriptive, but something about it made me jump a little bit. Again, not entirely sure why.
I do think this is a good story, and overall, I’d recommend it. I started off not liking Maria, but I think that was the point. I loved her growth, and Jordan’s too.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021I read Veritas shortly after it was released, but life has been nothing short of chaotic and I am finally getting up my reviews! I’ll be honest, I didn’t like Maria from the get go, but I think it’s because so much of who she is reminds me of myself… Yikes! However, I trust Ms. Woods and even though her books always destroy me, it’s in the best way possible! So with that being said, she made me love Maria. She had me cheering for her even when my heart was breaking for Dougie… I wanted Maria to realize that she deserved to be happy and be loved and that letting her guard down wouldn’t take away her power. She needed to accept herself and that’s hard to do. I love that Jordan didn’t give up on her. Even when he took a step back, he wasn’t really gone. The character development in this book is on point. I appreciate how Ms. Woods showed the healing that was happening with Maria and her family. That was the crux of it all. I’m never disappointed when I read one of A.L. Woods books! This might be my favorite!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025The book it’s self was good, but Ngl there were wayyyyyyy too many big words that i had to google…and i know im not stupid but the necessity to use hard words was not needed. Especially as excessive as they were used.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2024The story was great, but a bit on the longish side. I loved how the author did not make a distinction between the s@xes when it came to sleeping around. So what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Misunderstandings tend to be a buzzkill, but luckily they got a second chance. Good book
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021Veritas is a complex, deep read that will make you think.
Maria Tavares is 34 and one of the best attorneys at her firm, yet her contributions are overlooked and she is passed over for partner repeatedly. Determined to try to figure out if she truly is the obstacle to her life moving forward, she decides to go to therapy. The decision has a domino effect, bringing her past, present and future together in a way she never planned.
"Sometimes the things we thought we wanted the most aren't the things that are right for us."
Jordan Kovacs can't get the beautiful woman with whom he spent one glorious night with last October, but she's made it clear that she wants to forget him and pretend their night together never happened. Known to not back down from a challenge, Jordan has tried every trick in his arsenal to have Maria in his arms again. Victory comes when he accepts an invitation from the woman herself to a wedding as her plus one. Knowing he has but a short time, Jordan tries not to spook Maria with how quickly his feelings for her have grown, but secrets on both their parts could threaten what shaky foundation they already have.
"I wanted Maria Tavares - breakfast, lunch and dinner, and any other way I could have her... I wanted to be the source of her happiness and her scorn."
With lots of characters, emotions and a quick pace, Veritas is a read that makes sure you have to pay attention in order for the pieces of the puzzle to fit and fall into place. You will run the gamut of emotions for each of the characters as you read, especially Maria, as she she struggles with her identity and tries to sort out her feelings. Relinquishing control has never been her forte, and she struggles throughout the book. By the end of the book, though, I had a healthier respect for her, as she grew and matured.
I recommend this steamy, off-the-charts-chemistry, complicated read. You'll be glued to its pages, and thinking about it days afterward.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2022THIS is one of THE VERY BEST books I have ever read!!! But, where do I start? Jordan and Maria on their own are HOT! Put them together and yikes! - - they are combustible. I totally loved the way Ms. Woods writes! The vocabulary she uses is epic and I don’t find myself feeling stupid for having read Erotic Romance. Jordan and Maria’s story is absolutely beautiful and this is definitely one I’ll read again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2023I'll be honest, when I was first introduced to Maria in the Reflections Triology, I was not a fan. But after reading her Veritas, I think I like her better than Raquel. Even though we are nothing alike, I could identify and sympathize with Maria's struggles. I thought she and Jordan as a couple were perfection. Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, this book went above and beyond my expectations.
ARC provided for honest review.
Rating: 5/5
Smut: 3.75/5
The characters, especially the lead fc surprised me for all the best reasons.
The writing in this book is not simple or easy to read, because the level of language used is more upscale. Though, that makes sense considering both lead characters are highly successful and educated lawyers. I feel like this book enhanced by vocabulary lol but overall, it is a smooth read and not hard to follow. Just keep in mind you will find yourself looking up words every so often (unless your English is top notch haha).
As for the story, I was honestly expecting the typical enemies to lovers where its like opposites attract. But this is different because of how similar the lead characters were in intellect, drive, power, strength etc. It was really refreshing to read, because lately the books I'd been reading contained strong, serious, headstrong men with cute, sweet, somewhat shy/demure women. Whereas here, both the leads were so attracted to each other but still butt heads because they were so similar and I loved that.
Maria is so strong and headstrong, she's f*ing smart as hell, she commands a room with just her mere presence. Though, we also see her at times where she lacks confidence in herself and in her abilities which made her only more human and relatable. And in those times seeing Jordan try to make her see how f*ing awesome she is was ugh.. sweet as hell.
I really liked how here although the story is about Maria and Jordan, it almost seems as though, Maria was the centre of the story and Jordan was there in support of her. and throughout the book, we see how Jordan tries to be that support, that backbone in the dark for Maria.
And I love how, Jordan not only embraces her power, strength and intellect but he wants to push her to do better. Actually, he knows she doesn’t need him or any man but he just wants to be there to witness it. Its like when they say behind every successful man is a woman’s hand. But here Jordan wants to be the hand behind a successful Maria. Where men want to come home after a long day at work to a woman who’ll help them destress. He wants to be that for Maria after her long day at work.
I feel like Maria herself knows she’s strong, but does not fully realise how strong. And i feel like Jordan see’s that and more.
Basically, Jordan was everything for Maria what usually the female character is for the misunderstood, brooding male. And it was EVERYTHING!
Both character developments were beautiful to watch, especially Maria's.
The story was more than just them falling for one another and I loved that.
I feel like I can talk about this book and these characters forever <3
I highly, highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really emotionally intense!
Both main characters have understandable baggage/trauma and watching them tango around their crap rather than talk about it was almost too realistic. They showed such growth and this was an amazing read.
I will definitely look for more work by this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot lawyer romance with charachter building
I first read adrenaline by Al Woods and i was blown away by it, so i wanted to get this author more and now i read Veritas and i'm 100% certain, she is one of my favorites. I will buy whatever she brings out.
This book is about Maria Tavares the oldest sister of the Tavares family and Jordan Kovacs a single dad with his own familial issues. Maria is a lawyer in a dominantly men's world. she's always had to fight for everything she wanted and she did, she got it but not at the expanse of losing herself in the process. Being the oldest in the family and coming from immigrant parents, she had so much struggles trying to make her parents proud, but is was too much to handle. She is strong, very oppinionated and stubborn which makes the interactions with her and other people especially Jordan so good and so intense sometimes. Jordan is also a lawyer and a single dad of a girl. He also struggles with a lot of his own demons. The way these two charachters find themselves, get to known themselves, how they evolve and grow apart and together is just everything. I won't spoil much of the story, you just HAVE to read it for yourselves. Trust me!
They way the charachters developed in this story was so beautiful to read and so relatable. What i also liked about this book is that it is about older people. This was the first time i read a book about people in their thirties who are also still struggling to find themselves and grown and get their happy ending, i think that is why it made me relate so much, made me love their story so much. Plus Al Woods her writing style is somthing i very much like. I can't wait to read her other books as well.

I loved Jordan and I enjoyed Maria's character development.
Excellent read

4.0 out of 5 stars Misunderstandings and truths
This book is about stubbornness and the unique human trait of misunderstanding and jumping to conclusions. I really enjoyed it but also was frustrated by it at the same time. It’s definitely one of those books where I constantly wanted to shake all the characters. When you know someone you can hurt them and vise versa and that shows in this book.
Maria was closed off and stubborn while Jordan was pushy and pigheaded. They broke down each others walls while also firing missiles right at their sore spots. You hurt the people you love was definitely their motto.
I didn’t read the first book in the series but they read as standalones so it doesn’t feel like anything is missed if you stay with this book.
