- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2013There has been a lot of hype about a book and something that always worries me about that is will the book stand up to the hype?? Will it be as amazing as the author says it will be? With this one I will tell you that you will not be disappointed! This lived up to all it promised and MORE! I so feel in love with Leo Tate and his brother Sebastian. This is a true story about finding your own path and not allowing those to sculpt and share you in to what they think you should be. I would highly recommend this book and it should be on top of everyone's TBR!! If you are reading this and you haven't read it yet... go get it and make it your next read! That's how much I loved it! This book is told from a dual POV switching between the female and male leads.
So we start with Nora Blakely, she has become the epitome of perfect that her mother always wanted her to be. She is intelligent, she is beautiful, but deep down she feels empty. Sure she is so smart she won the national spelling bee, she is so beautiful that she has won pageants, she is so talented she is an accomplished pianist but these were things her mother pushed to do. She needs to be perfect and be the show daughter. We start with Nora giving the "Welcome to Briarcrest Academy" speech to incoming students when she has something she has never had before, a panic attack. This is when I knew I would love this book! She gets up on stage and says nothing... then blurts out "F*** Briarcrest Academy, and f*** you all!" OMG loved it! This is my kind of girl!! She knows her mother's wrath will come but at this point she didn't care anymore. In the audience that day is Leo Tate. He's there with his brother who will be attending Briarcrest but has an instant pull to Nora. He tries to deny it as he is older around 25 and Nora is a high school student. When they are both leaving the school, they make eye contact and Leo is enthralled with her but since she is younger he ignores the pull he has to her.
Due to Nora's little outburst, she is severely punished but it's to the point where she wants nothing to do with her Mother. That has always been more of a house of horrors than a home as there are secrets that come with being there. Her mother is the queen bitch and more than one occasion I wanted to drop kick her in the throat!! She is a news anchor and a local TV station and she cares more about her appearance then her family. It's infuriating how she is!! Nora ends up moving out and moving in with her Aunt and helps out in the Bakery she owns. One night Nora decides to become rebellious after drinking her sorrows away and she vandalizes an Escalade. Little did she know this Escalade belongs to that of Leo Tate. He is in the process of opening a gym across from her aunt's bakery. He catches her in the act and when he discovers who she was, he takes her in and to sober her up. They end up talking all night and little by little Leo finds his guard coming down. He also finds out that even though she is in high school, she is 18 almost 19... not the young one he thought she was.
Leo Tate... sigh... what's not to love about him! He is musician with tattoos that everyone swoons over. His parents were killed in an accident and he was forced to become guardian to his younger brother Sebastian. He doesn't do relationships. He does not want the attachment and heartbreak that goes with them. At a young age is a successful business and has opened a string of health clubs or gyms in California. Looking for a change, they move to Dallas. Even though he has the gym he also formed a band as music is what he enjoys. He discovers that Nora plays piano and invites her to a rehearsal. There he sees there is more to Nora than just a pretty face as she assists with the existing keyboard player that has autism. He discovers that he labeled her too quickly as being the spoiled rich girl and not the caring and kind person she is.
The more time Leo and Nora spend together the more his walls start to break down. Nora is also on her own path of self-discovery. She is doing things she would never imagine. She dyes her hair from blonde to red and gets a very large tattoo of angel wings on her back to signify her freedom. Even though her mother has disowned her, her family is still a source of heartache. Her brother has a secret that he keeps dangling in front of her that threatens to expose just what the secret is. Can she confront her brother and deal with those secrets that seem to haunt her??? Can Leo and Nora build a relationship even though he is firm about his "no relationship" status? This is such a fantastic book about self-discovery and building your own self-worth and learning to love even when its least expected.
I love these quotes from Leo!
"This was no lukewarm, vanilla feeling. It was a madness, making me feel like a week-kneed boy on his first date, like I had f***ing butterflies in my stomach when I pictured her face. She consumed my, my head my heart, my skin, my blood, my muscles, everything aching for the physical touch of her body against mine."
"And when I look into your eyes, I can see all the way to your heart, to the strong beautiful woman you are."
See... what's not to love about him!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2025I liked the way Nora was rebelling, but meeting and getting to know Leo changes some things for her. She wants to break out of the tight mold her mom has put her in, but doesn’t know how to do it without going to extremes. Leo helps her with this.
While Leo is a great character and I like him for her, I was leery of some of his decisions. You don’t sleep with a girl right after kissing another one. That was ick for me. How does he expect the girl to forgive and move on with him.
Some OW drama but no cheating. There is a sweet HEA. I can see this as being a good series. Nora’s beginning list vs her ending list made for a good ending to the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2013Very Bad Things was one of my most highly-anticipated books of the summer. Upon first reading the description, I was sucked in by the good girl gone bad idea. Add in some unrequited love and I am oh-so-very there. It lived up to my every expectation... and then some.
This book sucked me in from the first chapter when Nora, the incredibly smart and talented girl who appears to have it all, snaps at Briarcrest Academy's Open House. Nora's reached her breaking point. It's time for her to live a life other than the one her parents have been forcing her to live and I was thrilled to be along for the ride, bumps and all.
On the outside, Nora Blakely seems like the perfect girl, perfect student. She's a National Spelling Bee winner, editor of the yearbook, co-captain of the debate team, and an all-around exemplary role model. She's a beauty queen. She plays the piano. She loves words and "collects" them. She's also broken. She's hiding a huge secret and has finally reached her breaking point. She doesn't want to be this perfect girl anymore, so she comes up with a very different sort of to-do list. Nora's ready to be bad.
Enter Leo Tate. He's in the audience with his younger brother, Sebastian, when Nora has her big moment. On the outside, Leo is the stereotypical bad boy. He owns a gym. He's a musician. He's scorching hot. He definitely doesn't do relationships. He's certainly not looking for a relationship with a damaged girl seven years younger than him. He's attracted to Nora, but isn't interested in pursuing more.
Everything begins to change the night that Nora vandalizes Leo's Escalade. Sebastian convinces Leo to take her into their home so she can clean up - and sober up. Convinced it's time to tackle her list of bad things, Nora strips for Leo, teasing him. He's tempted, but even after learning that she is not jailbait as he feared, he still turns her down. He sleeps with women, not spoiled, rich girls. He won't let her leave that night because she's drunk and needs to sleep it off and he winds up comforting her after she has a nightmare. Nothing physical happens, but they begin to bond. She opens up to him about her past and he realizes there's a lot more to her than meets the eye.
The Tate brothers begin to be everything Nora needs. She forges a close friendship with Sebastian. They become so close that, despite his best intentions, Leo begins to feel jealous of his brother. He's not sure that something isn't going on between Sebastian and Nora. He loves his brother, but his attraction to Nora is strong and distracting. Nora and Leo become close in a much different, more volatile way. They want each other, that much is obvious. Their chemistry is seriously intense. It's as though the air is ready to ignite when they're in the same room. Leo tries like hell to fight it. He just wants Nora to find herself. He wants good things for her. He doesn't want her to be the girl with the list of bad things to do. He knows that's not the real Nora.
As you can imagine, this book is filled to the brim with angst. But it's the best possible type of angst. The sexual tension between Nora and Leo is thick. It's hot and just waiting to explode. There are some straight up five-alarm scenes in this book. The "lesson in clarity" scene is so hot that I was convinced my iPad was going to melt! ::fans self::
The characters were so complex and well-written. I couldn't walk away from them. I HAD to know what happened. I wanted to know what all the secrets were and if true feelings would ever come to light. Despite her faults and issues, Nora was completely likable. She had a bit of quirkiness to her. To a casual observer, she might have appeared to have an easy life, but the truth is it was anything but. Though Leo made me want to yell and scream at him, I absolutely loved him. He was the perfect alpha male, "bad boy" lead. I loved that the book was written from both of their perspectives so I was able to get in both of their heads. I loved the dynamic between Leo and Sebastian. Leo may not have been perfect, but he was a really good brother and guy, in general. He was protective of those he cared about and though he might not have always gone about things in the best way, he (most) always had the best of intentions. What can be said about Sebastian? He was a sweet kid. I hope we get a book from his perspective in the future.
There's more to this book than meets the eye though. It touches on some pretty deep issues. I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I wanted to throw my iPad across the room. The story flowed well and was unique. I read a lot of NA lit and I haven't read anything quite like this one before. I really love this author's style and I look forward to more fantastic books from her in the future. She's going on my auto-buy author list. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing couple
The chemistry between those two were absolutely palpable. The reason for the 4 stars: Seeing Leo deny her all the time, and some things that he did and happened between them was just too much I guess. There was some parts that I bleeded for Nora..
I recomend if you are not so sensible, because if you are, you should probably look for others titles from Ilsa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hörbuch plus eBook super zum ENGLISCH LERNEN

1.0 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment..
I'll be short..I totally hate the hero. TOTALLY HATE HIM! He was frustrating, a hypocrite and a man-whore.
I dislike the heroine, at the beginning I though she was going to be a kick ass but as I read on she really disappointed me.
Speaking about the story I found parts that seem completely useless to me and other parts that could use I little more developing..
I love Sebastian and Drew but that wasn't enough for me to like this book..I don't think I'll read the other books in this series..
