This is another book that popped up in my recommendations feed. Obviously I thought the book blurb looked interesting but another reason that I decided to go for it was that it is co-authored by Terry Mixon who has written the Empire of Bones Saga which I have enjoyed very much.

This book makes me think a bit about the good old fashioned pirates and heroes stories in the age of sailing ships. You know, Horatio Hornblower, Red Beard, Black Beard, Blue Beard. Wait, wasn’t that last one a Viking? Oh, that was Blue Tooth. Never mind, you get the idea.

Since this is set in the future there are obviously no sails but a lot of other “features” to make the story interesting. It is a true science fiction story though and not one of those where the author tried to make everything look like old times but in space. One thing that maybe sets the story apart a bit is that there appears to be no FTL. Yes there are space ships and yes they move about quite a lot but we stay in the solar system. I quite like that actually because I feel it put more pressure on the author in terms of the actual story, pressure that I would say he delivered on.

The main protagonist is the likable, ass-kicking, revenge-taking, swashbuckling vigilante and mercenary that you would expect (or at least hope for in this kind of book). During the course of the book he is surrounding himself with a bunch of equally likable and colorful companions when embarking on his quest for revenge as well as number of other friends in high (and low) places.

Then we have the bad guys. Here we have a classical despicable, mean, savage and through and through bad pirate as the main adversary. At least in this first book. I would say that more and even worse adversaries lurk in the shadows. Anyway, he has just the right bad guy charisma to fit into the story of the book.

The universe itself is quite well done. I do like this mercenary guild idea. The science part is good and the action, tactics and strategy works well both in space and on the ground. It is fiction of course so some liberties with physics and reality are to be expected.

Bottom line, this book is a clear five out of five for me.

I have read and enjoyed books by both authors in the past. Thus, the decision to buy and read this book was essentially a no-brainer. The story was fast moving and mostly enjoyable. There were some editing errors but those were relatively rare and didn't greatly interfere with my enjoyment of the book. There were a couple of more significant problems that I would like to address but those still didn't prevent me from giving a four star review.

The first issue stems from the authors' decision to use amnesia as a plot device. Amnesia has been overused in books and movies. It often indicates a degree of intellectual laziness upon the part of a writer who has refused to put in the necessary time and effort to come up with a more plausible plot device. The truth is that amnesia is far rarer than books and films would lead us to believe. Otherwise, we would be surrounded by martial artists, boxers, football players, race car drivers, and others who have developed amnesia as a result of head injuries. I frankly would have had more respect for the authors if the protagonist had simply pretended to have amnesia in order to avoid divulging his real name. This could have created some interesting tension between the protagonist and the various government players as they decided whether to believe the protagonist's claim of amnesia as well as his later assertions about the pirates and slavers.

The second problem with the book stems from the fact that we are repeatedly told that the pirates and slavers have spies every where. Because of this, the characters are reluctant to pass information through official channels for fear of that information being intercepted before they have a chance investigate and catch the bad guys.

Despite this, the hero repeatedly shared all of the critical details with many people. None of these were people the hero had known for very long or very well. The government agent who accompanied the hero throughout the latter portion of the book seemingly had no objection to this. Why? There is no answer to this question. It would have made far more sense if these two characters had maintained stricter control over the flow of information. Some details would surely need to be shared with some other characters so that they had an adequate understanding of what needed to be done and why it needed to be done. Almost nobody, however, actually needed to know all of the details. The words "operational security" and "need to know" come to mind with regards to this kind of problem. It would have been bad enough if this had happened once but it happened repeatedly. This repeatedly threw me out of the flow of the narrative as I stopped to wonder why the heck the characters were doing this.

Let me be clear on this point - I have never been a highly trained secret agent. If I was stopping to think about issues of operational security, then the highly trained secret agent who accompanied the hero should have been thinking about it. She should have been taking action to preserve operational security. The reasonably intelligent and paranoid hero should himself have been aware of the issue and should have been controlling his tendency to run off at the mouth. And yet, this didn't seem to occur to either character. It just doesn't ring true.

A five star rating should indicate that a book is free from material problems or errors. That was not the case here. Although I still enjoyed the book, these problems were enough to stop me from giving a five star review. The authors should take the time to revise the book with an eye toward eliminating these issues.

I have read several good works of Terry Mixon and have found his characters to be deeply developed and interesting.

This is a story of a young man, Brad, who has a tragic encounter with a deadly pirate and how he coupes with that, preparing for a more equitable outcome.

It was a very intense action drama, and I look forward to the next book - enjoy.

I ended up reviewing book 2 in this series first, but don't want to forget to review the initial tale. Honestly, this story impressed me on several levels even as I shook my head about a few flaws I felt I noticed in the world building.

So the basic story is that a young man survives a pirate attack on his family's space ship, but loses his fiancee and is ejected from the ship during the fight, nearly dying before being rescued by a passing military ship. He swears a blood oath to kill the pirates and the story is off and running.

There is no real heroes journey here. The hero is an anti-social unformed cypher who seems to have little honest emotion left. He hates the villains, but the villains are a complete joke in that they are both too powerful, and yet invisible to the hero most of the time. There is a couple of pirate leaders who can be pointed to as "these guys are bad", but even seeing them fails to bring a true emotional reaction.

But that's part of my complaint about the fact that I don't agree with the universe/world building here. I like the characters, and the plot was well thought out, but I would have liked to see more development of the world and why it is in the current state.

But as a entertaining read, this plays out very well, so I'd call it a low 4 star.

Unlike many of the reviews here I bought my copy and am under no obligation to give an "unbiased review". I actually disagree with many of the reviews here. The pace was too fast. The character building lacking. The story was very predictable. The events were far too easy. The hero seems to be amazingly lucky time and time again. Nothing bad happens to him. There is no long difficult build up of hard experience that would round off the over confident teenager.

All that said I still give it 5 stars because it is a good read. A simple popcorn book. Happy to recommend it and will definitely be buying the sequel. BUT if you are looking for anything other than a gentle romp with no real description of the technology then you will be disappointed with this book.

Bought this yesterday and just finished it. Great book loved the ship to ship battles and totally believed the hero's hatred of slavers and pirates. Can't wait for the second part of this duology. Two favourite authors collaborating nor wonder this was an excellent read.

Both of these authors write well on their own, and continue that excellence in this collaboration. The characters are well-developed, the plot is intriguing and the writing is well-paced to keep the reader's interest throughout.

I look forward to more in this series. Well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining read, ideal for the holidays, read on the beach or in a bar.

This book stuck to all the tropes, ship attacked by pirates - check, young man sees his sweetheart killed - check, seeks vengeance - check. Don't get me wrong this is an entertaining read and within the limits of the genre it's written well, at times it reminded me of Elizabeth Moon's Vattas War series in style. Already bought the second book in the series.
