When the Walls Come Down: A Neighbors to Lovers Standalone Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 721 ratings

Shane Warren was the most charming, gorgeous, and witty guy I’d ever met. So imagine my surprise when my one-night stand turned out to be my neighbor and the man I’d been hired to replace. It was hard to feel neighborly or professional while sneaking out of his bedroom in the morning, but that didn’t stop me from coming back for more.

I wasn’t looking for a relationship, but Shane made it hard to resist.

Why did his teasing shoulder kisses sweep me off my feet?
Why did every small gesture he made have such a major impact on my heart?
And most of all, why did he hold me like he never wanted to let go?

When it came to losing his career, Shane wasn’t going down without a fight.
But neither was I—even if I was falling in love with him.

Bottom line: If I wanted my dream job, it meant stealing it from the man of my dreams—and ultimately risking losing them both.

From the Author

In April of 2020, like so many of you, we felt lost. We didn't know what to write. Was high-emotion romance right for the current times? Was more angst what everyone wanted? Was anything even funny? Or sexy? Independently, we were staring at the blinking cursors. Confused. Nervous. Uninspired.
Wanna know a secret? This isn't the first time we've written together. The other story may never be finished or ever see the light of day, but it showed us we worked well together and it was fun. So we decided to try again with a new story... and O.M.G.
Suddenly, our days were filled with laughing and plotting. We were getting word counts like never before. Maggie and Shane had us giggling and falling in love with them, but also falling in love with writing again. We pushed each other. We argued a time or two--on behalf of our fictional counterparts, of course. And we made something special out of a time in our lives when there was very little to feel excited about.
This was the book we needed. We needed to write it. We needed it to get motivated every morning. We needed it to distract us. We needed it to bring us joy. But mostly, we discovered we needed each other.
From two readers who met in 2013, dreaming of publishing their own stories, to two writers with a combined forty novels under their belts, and finally to co-authors, we thank you for being a part of this story--our story--and for reading When the Walls Come Down.
Enjoy Shane and Maggie as much as we did,
Aly Martinez and M. Mabie

A romance written by fate.
5 out of 5 stars
A romance written by fate.
Looking for a meet cute romance? Well this is simple not, nope this is the most awkward meet to ever been written and it is simply the most perfect. Shane and Maggie with their awkward banter and fate written meeting this book was everything. From funny laugh out loud to big tears sadness, their romance is epic! What with all the murdering going on and murder weapons being ordered on amazon it is no wonder how these two could keep their hands off each other. Who knew that starting over would be as exciting and scary s these two start new adventures together on a path written by serendipity. Every minute spent on reading this book left me with a warm feeling of love and yes, envy! I want to embark on an adventure and cute meet my Shane, hmmmm, oh well! I love reading about it at any rate. Great story by two great authors. It is in my top 5 for 2020!

Call me stupidly nostalgic or hopelessly romantic. Regardless of which, When the Walls Come Down...

I can say it was absolutely 110% of awesome, stupid high pitched squealing to recognize characters from both authors books. To know exactly what they had been through gave me a knowing smirk and wicked gleam. However, they (the previous stories) are not required reading to dive into When the Walls Come Down. Think of them as a bonus or a behind the scenes look. If you are like me though, you will binge read the Wake series like your @ss is on fire and then dive into The Retrieval Duet.

So now that I've teased you with all you don't know about the past, let me tease you more. When the Walls Come Down is filled with laughs, awkward conversation, and the best deliveries ever. If only I could find some one to gift war with...(I'm taking volunteers!)

    M. Mabie and Aly Martinez have got this thing on lock. Well, first it was sticky but Shane had it fixed. (Okay, that was lame and yet you are wondering!) My hokey comments and weird sense of humor should not detract from the swoony romance and laugh out loud randomness of When the Walls Come Down.

You will swoon. You will smile. You will grin. There might be some well earned glares, dagger eyes, and finger poking as well. Just remember, "When the Walls Come Down, there's just love."

Oh and maybe prepare yourself for unwanted tears, they tend to sneak up on the emotional readers. (As I wipe my face)

Some of the best moments in this book feature walls.

I had read three books by Aly Martinez and was looking forward to working my way through her entire list when I came across this collaboration with M. Mable. I dove in with great expectations, only to put this book aside. Twice. It was a little too slow for me. Yes, the dialogue was good. Yes it was funny. Yes, I liked these characters. But there wasn’t much happening in the story. It was a bit blah for me. However, these are sneaky writers. Somehow, eerily mirroring this story, I found—due to their dastardly skills—I was more in love than in like with these characters and couldn’t let them go. I’m glad I hung in, but I’m not giving them that fifth star. No way. Although, I would if I could add another half a star. Okay, 4.75 stars, but that’s it!

This book was incredible. Romcom isn't my go-to, but the sprinkles of wit, humor, and banter all throughout this book took me away from the mundane of quarantine and into a world that brought me out of a funk. The way the authors combined humor with heartfelt interaction and the growth between two characters with the same motivations was seamless.

Mabie and Martinez are a stellar writing team and I hope to see more from them together. Their writing flowed flawlessly, and the characters they developed were relatable. The cameos from their previous books were eased in, and even for me -- someone who hasn't read some of the books the cameos came from -- I didn't feel lost or unsure of their places. It also didn't have spoiler-y content for previous books and I fully intend to go back and read their stories.

Now, onto the current. I adored Maggie. She was a spitfire with a shining personality and intelligent to boot. Heroines are my favorite, and Maggie is up there on the top 5 of my favorite heroines of all time. She was very sure of herself, confident, with lots of love to give, but she never stood down from a challenge. Her sense of humor was my favorite part.

Shane was also a great Hero. His strength stems from routine, and Maggie is anything but routine for this Hero.

Combined, these two were unstoppable. They had an obvious connection and the fun they had together is what dreams are made of. Overall, When the Walls Come Down is a fun, heartfelt ride with lots of sass, heat, and grit. Highly recommend.

I don't know. I liked both MC's but I was a bit taken aback by the storyline about the job.

Shane got a job at his sister/brother-in-law's company 4 years ago and he is doing a great job. But they fire him because they think he needs to do something else and - guess what - they have already scoured the country for his replacement and given her the job. That she is only 24 and has no relevant experience (!) does not seem to matter.

Shane and Maggie meet and after their hot night are both upset to find they are working for the same company - in the same job no less. And then the brother-in-law decides they have to compete for the job.

The writing is good, as always, but I did not like the fact his family were such meddlers.

    4.5-4.75 STARS

When it comes to romance novels, I always "one-click" Aly Martinez's books before ever reading the premise of her latest release. The reason for this is simple… she never fails to deliver the goods! But M. Mabie is a brand new author for me, so I had no idea what to expect when I delved between the pages of “When the Walls Come Down”--a collaborative venture between the two. Pushing any trepidation aside, I dove in with eager anticipation. And the bottom line? This creative pair hit a home run the first time up at bat. Because the resulting product of their collective effort is nothing short of magic!!

As a spectator to Shane and Maggie’s burgeoning romance, I experienced the full gamut of essential feels. Their story is sexy, fun, charming and witty, with just a smidgen of angst sprinkled throughout. Typically, too much or unnecessary angst will find me heading for the hills. But “When the Walls Come Down” is a perfect example of how to do it right. It’s also a fresh new take on an existing premise I’ve seen play out one too many times.

For these reasons and more, I fell head-over-heels in love with Shane and Maggie’s heart-felt story. A huge win for me, because along the way, I’ve found myself another “go to author” to add to my discriminating list.

A fantastic duo writing a phenomenal story, of humour, romance, relationship issues and glorious banter between two delightful characters, Maggie and Shane. Maggie a 24 year old arrives in California after leaving her family in Atlanta to start a new job . She meets Shane in a bar. Has a few frinks and both decide to leave. After a short walk it becomes obvious that they are going in the same direction, and fate plays a large part in the storyline. A wonderfully well written, funny and emotional book. Well worth a visit. Easy to read and totally absorbing and enjoyable. Shane’s lack of confidence has been eroded by his ex wife. He shed her and quite a lot of excess pounds and is now a hunk to recon with. Maggie is a free spirit who wants to totally enjoy herself but like Shane a lot! The story unfolds, and is a great read. Well worth 5 stars.

A good read. Love the banter. Not as exciting as the previous but it held its own. Maggie and Shane met at a point in their lives when they both found a connection they didn't know they wanted but was what they needed.

When the Walls Come Down is a light and airy, fun, steamy read with just a little angst. The story flowed well, it was engaging, and I enjoyed every minute of it. From the moment Shane and Maggie met they had such intense chemistry, and their banter made me laugh out loud. They were so enduring. I liked the secondary characters too. I have read numerous books from Aly Marinez, but this is the first one of M. Mabie's, and I think I've been missing out on her stories. Looking forward to reading more stories, from this incredible writing duo.

I didn't know what to expect with this!
I've absolutely loved Aly's books, but I've only read one by M. Mabie, so I didn't know how this would be, other than a "light" book... But turns out, it was amazing!!!!
It was perfect! With everything going on right now, this is the perfect book to take you away from reality and look you up safely in the book world!
Definite MUST READ and I'll be recommending it to anyone and everyone.
