The Werewolf of Marines Trilogy Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 122 ratings

This trilogy follows the adventures of Aiden Kaas, a reluctant Marine in Iraq who is bit by a werewolf and becomes infected himself. The trilogy consists of three stand alone books: Semper Lycanus, Patria Lycanus, and Pax Lycanus.

Semper Lycanus
Private First Class Aiden Kaas has enlisted in the Marines for all the wrong reasons. Now deployed to Iraq at the age of 19, he just wants to put in his time and serve out his enlistment. However, after being bitten by a seemingly rabid mujahideen, he finds himself suffering from a strange illness, one with consequences beyond his wildest imaginings. As the disease ravages his body and exposes him to dangers far darker than active combat, Aiden discovers what it means to come of age, and how he must come to grips with what it is he has become.

Patria Lycanus
Cpl Aiden Kaas is an unsanctioned werewolf, turned without the Lycan Council’s approval. While the Council ponders what to do with him, he is warned not to shift and to keep the very fact that werewolves exist a secret.
However, Aiden is a Marine assigned to a Marine Special Operations Team in eastern Afghanistan, and if there is a threat to his team, he will do anything, to include shifting to his werewolf form, to protect them.

With a faction of the Council wanting his extermination, his own government trying to discover just what he is and how it can use him, and a rogue werewolf warlord trying to protect his smuggling routes through the Hindu Kush, Aiden has to navigate a tricky minefield to both keep the secret and to merely stay alive.

Pax Lycanus
Corporal Aiden Kaas is just like any other Marine—except for the minor matter that he is a werewolf, one unsanctioned by the Lycan Council. Factions of the Council want him exterminated as a threat to the Tribe, and the military has tracked him down and wants to use him as a super-warrior, something that the Council cannot accept.

When Colonel Jack Tarnition infects himself with Aiden’s blood to become a werewolf in his own right, things start spiraling out of control, and with his mentor Hozan’s assistance, Aiden has to navigate the threat to himself, his fiancé Corporal Claire Record, and Army Major Keenan Ward. The four werewolves have only each other to face two powerful forces, forces with diametrically opposed viewpoints that will lead to an inevitable clash of wills.

I am a retired Marine infantry colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife Kiwi and twin five-year-old girls, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie. I am a two-time Nebula Award Finalist, a two-time Dragon Award Finalist, and a USA Today Bestselling writer.

I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 100 titles published, 80 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, "Fire Ant" was a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novella, "Integration" was a finalist for the 2018 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel, and "Sentenced to War" was a finalist for the 2021 Dragon Award in the same category.

My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America where I'm serving as the Nebula Award Commissioner.

I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, writing, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, taking my girls fishing, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.

I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.

Just finished the UFMC series, a hard bitten saga of one man’s rise from boy to Commandant. Great, great stories. Then I picked up the Werewolf of Marines Trilogy. So fun! Sometimes an honorable, ass-kicking werewolf who bleeds Marine green is just the reading materialI need. Brazee worked this yarn into a full blown Trilogy that was exciting and has a great story arc. Hooked, now I am going for all the rest of his books.

I have really enjoyed the author’s USFMC novels, in which he took his extensive knowledge gained as a Marine Corps officer and transposed it to a Corps of the future. I thought his best (and most thoughtful) series in the USMFC universe was the Ghost Marines, consciously recreating the problems faced by courageous Black Marines with the integration of the Corps following Truman’s 1948 order.

This one, not so much. A dirtbag Marine turned into a Varg, a werewolf, with a wise Kurdish wolf as his Yoda, seemed way over the top. The levels of graphic violence, while plot-driven, still felt unnecessarily extreme. The bad guys seemed cartoonish in their evil.

On the other hand, when writing about Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, Col. Brazee was right on target— the long patrols without enemy contact, the frustration with higher command, the heat and time dilation of actual combat, the camaraderie and the loss of friends to enemy fire. He writes of the role of the hospital corpsman with the Marine unit (the Marines use Navy medics, who are fully integrated with the Marines), and the willingness of those medics to risk their lives for their Marines.

When writing about Marines, either present or future, Col Jonathan Brazee is as good as they come. I just wish that he’d skipped the werewolves.

I like this book series, because the idea about a marine who becomes a werewolf is a interesting idea. Adrian, the main character went from a self serving coward to a soldier who fought to serve his country and to defend his fellow soldiers. I really liked how he grew as a character. The only drawback was the kind of long sex scene, but to be fair the author does warn the reader in the book description. All in all an awesome read by Jonathan P. Brazee.

I wasn't sure it was still possible to write a reasonably original werewolf novel, let alone a trilogy of them. Mr. Brazee wrote a wonderful world, where the werewolves can range from human to wolf and the Warg (think Crinos from White Wolf) in between. Not all of them can become full wolves and there is a definite division between a bitten (turned) wolf and a werewolf born that way. With that, he redefines the genre. He also does something quite clever in identifying a typical werewolf mentality and how it differs from natural wolves. Additionally, his werewolves are not rage-fueled engines of destruction, like in White Wolf games an novels or in many movies and books. His wolves are vulnerable, even if they don't realize it. He places very clear limits on them and doesn't adjust that for plot convenience.

I loved these novels. I would love to see additional novels in this world.

This is a good beginning for.those who want.to LARP. Has decent grasp of Were society. Also, a good umderstandimg.of.fhe heirachy needed for such story. However, the author.needs a better proffreader to cancel.out the obnoxious doubles of words.

These books fully satisfied my cravings for a fast, fun read with plenty of development. Loads of military action, a reluctant hero who has to get his act together to survive, shady government operatives, AND werewolves? It has all that and more.

It's a crazy premise...a serving US Marine becoming a werewolf, but Mr. Brazee makes it work.
His writing, as with the other titles of his that I have read, is compelling, believable, and action oriented.
I don't do spoilers, bit the plot is well worked and the culmination is satisfying. I found myself yearning to be able to shift to Varg or Wolf, and still do. Oh to be able to run through the woods in the night!
    But I digress!
If you enjoy tough action ( not for the squeamish) and a fast moving plot, and you're ok with being left feeling just a little bit inadequate ( joke, I think) you'll enjoy this fresh take on the old Werewolf yarn.
Another good story from Jonathan Brazee.
