Whispers in the Rigging: Blue Moon Investigations Book 9 - A Snarky Paranormal Detective Mystery Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,020 ratings

What lurks in the shadows at the Royal Navy Historic Dockyard? Is it something evil and malignant? Will it suck at your soul? No, because it will be some idiot in a costume, same as always.

Tempest Michaels is going undercover with best friend Big Ben to find out why his Dad was found unconscious and stuffed into a wheelie bin. There is no client this time, just a definite need to find someone worthy of a jolly good punch in the pants.

With strange noises coming through the floor of the rigging room and reports of ghosts seen at night wearing the uniform of 18th Century Royal Navy Officers, the chaps set out to unravel the mystery, but is there more going on than a simple fake haunting? Also, what do the old Navy boys mean by their offer of help? And why are so many of the employees Ukrainian?

It’s going to take more than a determined approach and Big Ben’s top chat-up lines to get through this one. Plus, it’s Jagjit’s wedding next weekend which means a Batchelor party in four days’ time.

Will he survive the anti-Army banter of the old Navy boys? Will Big Ben copulate with every single woman on the night-shift cleaning crew?

Review

"As always with Steve Higgs this latest (for me) book in the Blue Moon series was I consider excellent, just the right blend of humour, suspense and the unknown. Steve Higgs is a terrific creative talent - long may he continue to scribe."

"Omg, what am I going to read now. This series was excellent to the point where I just want to keep reading about what's going to happen next. Can't wait for books 7 and 8."

"I really like these books, they're really funny and well written, great for a holiday read and full of colourful characters. Just waiting for the next one to be published!"

About the Author

At school, the author was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, he won his first award. However, calling it his first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, he is having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and claims to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in his head as they clamour to get out.He lives in the south-east corner of England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he will ever leave, the beer is just too good.

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Tempest Michaels books. I’ve decided that humor is as necessary to my day as food and water and Tempest has taken me along on another rollicking good case. I am totally satisfied to let him do all the hard work, exercise the dogs, and take the punches while I stand back and read.
Mr. Higgs, you have created a devoted reader so please keep up the good work!

This was almost non-stop action and more continuous danger than usual. This one is personal, Tempest’s father has been working a few hours a week as tour guide at what used to be the Royal Navy Shipyard he had been in the Navy and there were a few other former Retired Navy also working there. He told his friends it was strange but he kept hearing indistinct voices coming from below the Rigging room. A couple of days later part of his job was changed and he was struck over the head and put in a trash bin. Tempest decides he will get Justice for his Dad who is unconscious for several days.

Brilliant, addictive and fully deserving of five stars, at least.
    .
Steve Higgs is a consummate story teller, whose books are a pleasure on so many levels and are all of a consistently high quality read. Without risk of a spoiler, I can say simply that they are whodunits with a difference, set in the south-east of England in modern 21st century times; and each features a different theme and adversary. In pursuance of which, and improvising by the ‘seat of his pants’ as it were, the main hero (who is ex-armed forces) seems to have the unfortunately recurring occupational hazard of getting himself arrested by the police, questioned, warned, and then released, at some point during most of his investigations.
    .
I recommend these tales all equally, as it is hard to single-out an absolute favourite, because I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
    .
Their reliable intrigue, thrill, and suspense had me gripped and unable to put them down. Late nights and lack of sleep resulted. The recurring characters are endearingly believable, flawed and human, and very familiar (sometimes endearingly so) because I am sure we all have or had once known friends and acquaintances just like them, ‘warts and all’, including strengths, weaknesses, annoyances, and attitudes; sometimes demonstrated in outrageous banter. All have been familiar to me as very much like real people whom I have known, lost touch with over a lifetime, and now vividly recall. Thus it feels like a long lost and welcome reunion.
    .
The dialogue and interaction is interspersed and balanced with moments of irresistible humour, which perfectly compliments the adrenaline-filled moments. Although each novel draws from the same regular team of characters (investigators, their researchers and advisors, and back-up muscle), and are sequentially written, nevertheless each novel is stand-alone and can be just as enjoyable if read out of order.

4.0 out of 5 stars All in all another enjoyable read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2019
I read a lot of crime novels and enjoy this series because it is different to the others, a bit more light hearted and with a splattering of humour which makes me chuckle. I don’t read anything else like this so can’t compare it with other books or authors in the “cozy mystery” genre.

I enjoyed this book, as I have with others in the series, because it moves along at an easy pace, the plot is not overly complex as to be demanding, and the characters are great. If you’ve not read one of these books before I suggest you start at the beginning as it will give you a better understanding of the relationship between the characters and the characters themself. There are a few typo’s and other errors in the early books (as there are in this review, probably), though they might have been addressed now, but don’t let that put you off.

As always there was lots going one besides the main “case” though less of Tempests personal life, until the end!

All in all another enjoyable read.
