4.8 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Elina is a fairy born without wings. She has never known the gift of flight, thus, she is an outcast among her own people. However, she has found love in the form of Princess Cornelia, heir to the Fairy Kingdom, and soon finds a mother figure in a mortal woman, Sophie Thumb. However, when Elina is taken from her home under orders from the fairy queen, she is forced to undergo a perilous journey that may rob her of her mother, her true love, and possibly her own life.

Corny has never been more certain of anything than her love for Elina. Even with pressure from her mother and her sense of duty driving a wedge between the two of them, Corny cannot imagine a life without Elina in it. Thus, when she discovers Elina's disappearance and her mortal mother struck with a deathly illness, Corny is forced to work with one she harbors resentment for in order to find the one she loves most and bring her home.

I’m K Dezendorf, author of the first installment of the Shadows of the Umbra series, The Wayfinder’s Apprentice. For me, there was never a wrong time to enjoy a good novel, not even in the middle of school lectures, much to my teachers’ chagrin.

I began writing in earnest at age 14, often horrifying my parents with internet searches, all of which I assured was strictly for research purposes. When I’m not reading or writing, I enjoy watching anime, playing video games, and practicing my digital art. I currently live in Arizona with my loving husband and beautiful daughter.

This was a delightful tale, I highly recommend to anyone looking for a refreshing story that goes outside the box of traditional genres. As a reader, I came to this story not remembering the Thumbelina story, so I had no expectations. Reading this with an open mind and fresh eyes, this novella piqued my interest with its fantastic cast and the hardships they endure together. This book has lessons about life that unfold as Elina must face her insecurities and work through her shortcomings. As she moves through her adventures, she finds she has more friends and support than she realized. This beautifully crafted story has parallels to the life lessons we all struggle with from time to time.

This was a cute Thumbelina retelling that stays fairly close to the original story with the addition of a few unique touches. Elina was a lovely heroine who grows quite a bit throughout the course of her adventures. The side characters are fun, with Irving and Kabuto being my favorites. Overall, quite a nice story.

Elina is an unusual fairy; she was born without wings. She has learned to cope well enough without flight, though she’s considered an oddity by the other fairies. She’s a healer and an apothecary of sorts, and she has Cornelia (Corny), the heir to the throne of the fairy kingdom.

It’s clear from the start that Elina and Corny are in love, though Corny’s mother does her best to excise Elina from her daughter’s life. It sets Elina on a journey she may never recover from.

I picked up this story because it’s a retelling of Thumbelina, a childhood favorite of mine. (I’ll admit, it’s been years—ok, probably close to 30—since I last read the fairy tale, so before I wrote this review, I dug out my copy and skimmed through it.) Many of the elements from the classic tale are present in this novel—Elina waking up inside a flower in a human woman’s home, an arranged marriage to a frog, and receiving the help of a bird.

But all of the classic elements are seen through the lens of fairy politics, the queen’s schemes to keep Elina and Corny apart, and the societies of other creatures Elina and Corny meet. It added depth to the story and made for a very interesting read.

I found the magic system to be particularly fascinating. Fairies can use magic and rarely tire, so long as they have wings to regulate its flow. For Elina, born wingless, she tires very easily when she casts magic, and if she isn’t careful, the outcome can be unpredictable and dangerous. What I loved about Elina’s character is her willingness to help the injured creatures she comes into contact with, even if it means draining herself of energy.

But fairies aren’t the only entities with magic in this book. There is a witch who is responsible for Elina’s placement in a human’s home. The same witch is also behind a nasty and rather unexpected curse for another of the book’s characters later on. For the witch, who I believe was human, there seemed to be a different set of rules governing her magic. How hers worked was never fully explained.

This was a cute story that followed the original fairy tale very closely. I was reminded of Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach at times when Elina interacted with various insects and the nefarious spider queen. And though this is a novel, it retained much of that fairy tale feel.

It’s definitely a book written for a younger audience, but one that I think even adults will enjoy (I did.) If you like fairies and a bit of magic, talking animals, adventure, and happy endings, check out Wingfall.

I’ve read a lot of fairytale retellings but a Thumbelina retelling was new to me and I was happy to dive into Wingfall!

Dezendorf does an amazing job staying true to to original tale of Thumbelina while also taking a unique twist on the classic story.

I loved how Thumbelina (Elina) had already known Cornelia her whole life. My main problem with the actual tale of Thumbelina was that she didn’t know Cornelius at all! But this retelling changed that, showing that they had loved each other for years even with all of the things keeping them apart.

Filled with action, adventure, romance, and most of all, the journey of learning to love oneself, I highly recommend this story to any fans of fairytale retellings!

Charming reimagining of the Thumbelina story. The fairy world in this book is well done and adorable in the small details, and the plight of the wingless fairy is relatable and down to earth. An enjoyable read.

I was blessed enough to be both a beta and an ARC reader for this story. It’s so wonderful to get to see both aspects of the process, watching a story be polished to its full potential! I am leaving a review of the ARC version voluntarily.

This story is such a beautiful retelling of Thumbelina. The writer immediately draws you in with empathy and connection to the main character while also remembering to give her individual strengths that shine throughout the story. Elian’s plight tugs at your heart and you want nothing more than to see her discover and get her dreams!

Her love interest Corny is so utterly adorable and so outspoken with her love for Elina that it’s infectious. You can easily see how devoted she is while also noticing the elements of Elina’s life she needs to be more connected to.

The other characters are just as wonderful, being brilliant reimaginings of the familiar stops in the original fairy tale. You may be surprised with how much the author pours life into them.

At the risk of babbling on for too long—read this book. Buy this book. Fall in love with this book. I certainly have and look forward to the next adventure!
