This is a pretty easy, angst-free read about Jase, a lottery-winning millionaire. Jase didn’t actually tell anyone that he won so he gets grief from people like his brother, who believes he is working part time at a foundation and floundering. I have to put this out there right away, I couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t have told at least his family, who he appears to be close with. “His brother and his family could be so infuriating at times but unfortunately, they didn’t know the real truth behind Jase’s job and he felt if they did, things could be even worse than they were now.” Like finding out your beloved son/brother has been lying to you for years? Especially since he won the money at 18 and he’s now nearing 30, a time when the trust he set up at the time will actually give him access to the money.
Jase set up the charitable foundation when he won the money and that’s where he works. When he meets Kyle, the Texan who’s moved to Auckland after a bad break up. Here I have to say, I just did something that was a huge peeve of mine throughout the story. “The Texan” and “The Kiwi”. Not Kyle and Jase. Especially the use of “the Kiwi” happened repeatedly throughout and it was finally enough to really be annoying.
The story is low angst and light, with the getting to know you of Jase and Kyle being the focal point, as a romance should be. You know at some point there is going to be some kind of show down because Jase is lying to Kyle also, albeit perhaps by omission. I actually thought it would be worse than it is because Kyle’s cheating ex was a liar and I didn’t think Kyle would handle yet another person lying to him, but it was pretty low key. It’s a pretty sweet story and I liked Kyle a lot.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2018I hate writing a review that's less than glowing. I want to love every story I read and review, but unfortunately sometimes that doesn't happen. There were enough good things to keep me from disliking it all together, but not enough to keep me from saying it was more than just ok. I'm not necessarily the fastest reader, but when I'm really enjoying a book it usually doesn't take me more than two days, and usually less, to read it. This story took me most of a week, because for the first sixty some percent I was just having trouble getting into it and kept putting it down. I'm not sure exactly how to explain this right, but to me, the way the story was told felt more informational, even in the conversations, than an actual story happening, or witty, fun back and forths, and I found myself plodding through. When the story first opens it starts with Jace actively doing something and speaking in a bantery way to his brother. It flowed well and looked like it was going to be a fun read. But then they hang up and after that and for a lot of the rest of the book it felt like I was no longer seeing the story happen but just being told a lot of stuff. Background and descriptions and stilted conversations. All explaining but no showing, nothing really happening. And so unfortunately the story fell flat for me. Kind of two dimensional. It didn't feel like anything was happening. I wasn't really getting to know or like the characters. I wasn't invested in the story.
I am happy to say that that feeling changed a little after the sixty percent mark. Had the whole book been like the rest of the book from that point on, I would easily like or love this story. So what changed? The pace picked up. The story flowed better. There were some really cool descriptions of the place and culture. I started to like the characters. I'm not saying I didn't like them previously. I didn't actually feel anything, I didn't care about them one way or another. Now, however, I started to see them and know them and thereby like them. They were finally actively interacting and I was seeing the story happen and not just being told about it, if that makes sense. There were some moments where I laughed to myself. I found myself smiling and wanting to keep reading to see what would happen. I liked Jase and Kyle when they were together and wanted them together and happy because they were cute and had some really nice sexy-time scenes.
This story is very low on angst. Despite the secret being kept it's pretty straightforward. Just Jace and Kyle getting to know each other and fall in love while spending time with Jace's friends and family. The secrets and motivations were well explained and understood, so no reader angst wanting to shake anyone :) Because I did better enjoy the back half of this story I would say I'd give this author another try. I believe this author does have talent and that as they write more, each story will improve. I also believe that this was my personal experience and that many others will love this story. Would I personally recommend to a friend? I don't think so. Not at this point. Do I recommend it to you? I say read through the whole sample first and judge on that. I think the sample is long enough that both aspects of the story that I spoke about are portrayed and you can make your own decision from there.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018This was a cute story about two guys finding each other, their friend group, and a secret that may be a big deal. Jase is a Kiwi, Kyle is a Texan who’s come to take over the business where Jase’s best friend works. They click immediately, but circumstances seem to be conspiring against them at first. Once they do manage to get together, it’s insta-love with a lot of hot action – at the risk of sounding prudish, too much. I thought that character and plot development were sacrificed to sex, and that was unfortunate because I really liked both guys, as well as their group of friends and family, and would have liked to get to know them better. And while I don’t necessarily want to see characters tortured, I kept waiting for some drama. There is some, but by then the author just seemed to want to wrap up the story. I was given an advance copy for my honest review; this is a quick, light, unchallenging read that worked great for a rainy Saturday.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2019Great read with excellent premise! Something different for sure. Jase and Kyle both have things in their past they need to overcome then maybe their love can shine!
