The Wizard by the Sea Kindle Edition
Yates has never been a mentor--he doesn't deserve the privilege. But Connor comes to him after a tragedy, broken and helpless, and stays for years. Without realizing it, they fall in love. Yates knows he shouldn't: he has shaped this boy into a man. So Yates banishes the man who has stolen his heart.
When they meet again, Connor discovers that Yates has withheld secrets from him, secrets that could change his life. Their past is fractured, their future uncertain. But the one thing Connor knows is that he's always loved the wizard by the sea.
Slow-burn! Teacher/Student! The Wizard by the Sea is a 65,000 word steamy, standalone gay romance novel. Includes a kraken, chalk circles, some angst, plenty of pining, as well as May/Dec and coming-of-age themes. No cliffhangers, no cheating, but there is absolutely a Happily Ever After.

Review
"Oh-em-gee was this book just beautiful! The writing was just so beautifully done from start to finish, it flowed so naturally and poetically. This is the second book I have read from this author, and I remember loving the writing in her last book as well. I could not stop reading this one once I started!"- Rachel Emily, a Goodreads reviewer, 3/11/17

Hello! Thank you for wondering about me; I'm a funny, sausage-loving goofball with a surprisingly tolerant husband (his ghost, now!) When I'm not busy writing (which is very rare), I haunt grocery stores and stuff my freezer with my favorite food.
I've been scribbling since I was fourteen, and I believe that everyone needs a safe place. My dorky guys fall in deep, devoted love, the way Huz showed me a person can be loved, and every book is guaranteed to end in a HEA.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017First I must praise Anna for a great book it long but I set and read it in one day because I could not set it down. The characters come to life and seem to be so human with action, fee!ings and imagination.
You read about a boy who comes a man and fights so many battles as we do ourselves and how he overcame them with help a mentor then a friend and finally a lover and husband. It a story of how age does matter and what we hear in the wee hours of if the night might be real not a fantasy.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2019A well-written story full of magic and mystery, but also down-to-earth relationship building. Meet Connor as a young boy and journey with him as he grows into a man, responsible, sensible and thoroughly likable. Meet Yates, funny, witty, elusive, insecure in spite of his many years and his mastery of magic. An intriguing story and an entertaining read. The sex is good too.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2018Anna does not disappoint! I read her 'Blood' trilogy and was amazed. If anything I liked this book even more. A young man finding his soul mate in an old wizard with issues. Overcoming loss and death of loved ones. Learning to let go. Learning to accept grief and loss. Learning to accept failure and the disappointment of others. Finally accepting love and learning to love one's self. Fantastic! And it even includes a battle with a mystical beast.

I downloaded a copy when it was recommended as a slow-burn romance. It was even said that it's a bit too slow... but as I finish the book at long last, I find myself disagreeing as it wasn't slow enough for me. If one were to say that it was slow-burn because it took the couple a while to get together, then yeah, one might say it was slow-burn, but when I was reading I didn't feel with the characters. Actually, the opposite happened. The more I read, the less invested I was and in the end both Connor and Yates simply drove me mad.
In fact, there was a quote in this very book about 80% in that said the heroes both were idiots. As I read it, I found myself agreeing wholeheartedly. Even though I haven't had a lot of time to read lately, I haven't grown a fondness for books where one of the characters thinks they are not good enough for the other one and that's why they have this stupid back and forth.
One more thing. Usually romance novels with age gaps are my thing, but it wasn't like that this time around because Yates had too big of a role raising Connor and that just felt a bit icky for me. If he hadn't had such a role with Connor's with upbringing as he basically was the only adult in Connor's life after Connor's mum passed away and his dad found solace in alcohol bottles, I probably wouldn't have been bothered by it.
All in all, an OK read for me. Started off really good, but dwindled about halfway through.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021I wasn’t sure how a M/M romance infused with magic was going to work, but it actually blended quite well. Very interesting story, with some atypical relationship struggles for our atypical couple.

4.0 out of 5 stars a perfect read for when you’re in a dark place that needs light but also some substance
On his tenth birthday, Connor meets the wizard who would one day become his mentor, his friend, and as he grows older, his lover. He hopes.
The Wizard by the Sea perfectly balances the light and fluffy with the dark and trigger warnings, and makes a perfect read for when you’re in a dark place that needs light but also some substance. Diane recommended this to me when I was in such a place, and it was the perfect fit. Thank you, Diane!
