Worth a Shot (Worth Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
The Worth Series Complete Collection by Lyra Evans (Boxed Set Books 1-3) is now available!
Detective Oliver Worth has everything he needs—the job he always wanted and a knack for picking one-night stands. When a high-born Witch is found murdered on the steps of Nimueh’s Court, Oliver is given the case of the century—because no one else will touch it. Not when it looks like the murder was committed by a Werewolf.
The Treaty between the Courts of Nimueh and Logan has stood for over a hundred years, and peace was hard-won. If a Werewolf is responsible, the murder counts as an act of war and would plunge both kingdoms into chaos. Something Oliver’s Captain is keen to point out.
Treading lightly, Oliver has no choice but to venture alone into Logan’s Court to investigate. The trail of clues leads right to Connor Pierce, a newly minted Alpha of Logan’s kin. Connor is gorgeous and captivating and absolutely a suspect. Determined to do his job and catch the killer, Oliver finds he’s now got more to worry about than an inter-kingdom war. He tries to ignore his growing desire, but Connor keeps drawing him in. Everything about Connor is intoxicating, and Oliver isn’t sure how long he can fight off temptation…
Now there’s not just the peace of two kingdoms on the line—there’s also his heart.
Worth a Shot is a M/M paranormal mystery romance with Werewolves, Wizards, and explicit sexual content. First in a series but can be read as a stand-alone. No cliffhangers.

About the author

Lyra Evans has been making up stories since she was a kid and writing them down since her best friends informed her that was actually a career. Though plot and fantasy are what drive her worlds, she's got a particular love for M/M romance that she can't quite kick (though who would want to?). She tries her best to mix those three elements in her novels. A lover of books, games, food, and travel, she's always excited to try something new.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016Now, I appreciate hot, steamy scenes in my reading as much as the next gay guy, but I prefer for a book to be plot- or character-driven, and the intimate stuff is a nice garnish. This book though...wow. The overall plot is OK, and the characters are interesting. But the level of heat throughout most of this book is incredible, and not even particularly explicit.
Oliver is quite a complex character - open about his sexuality in the off hours, but deeply closeted in a professional setting. Although we don't get a whole lot of backstory on any of the characters in this book (maybe in the sequels?) we learn enough about Oliver to understand what makes him tick. Connor is more of a cipher, but that is by design. We learn about the werewolf society (Logan's Court) bit by bit as Oliver does. One thing that is very clear - sex and sensuality are very much integral to the wolves and their interactions.
The world-building is nicely done here as well. This is a society where magic exists and is a fact of life. Dirty clothes are taken care of by laundry wards, and cocktails are served with anti-intoxication potions mixed in. At the same time, there are cars, computers, and cell phones. The setting is built organically - not a whole lot of exposition going on. This doesn't always work for me, but it definitely fit in here. Also, although this is ostensibly a shifter story, very little of this plays into the plot except to define the different societies (and associated prejudices).
A large portion of the book is taken up by Oliver needing to pose as Connor's consort to interview a key witness. As a plot device it's a little flimsy, but the attraction, temptation, and intimate pas-de-deux between Connor and Oliver is hotter than hell and kept my attention throughout! The mystery is resolved nicely and while the ending is a bit unexpected (in a good way) it sets the stage for future stories, although this book is self-contained.
I liked this one a lot. Recommended!
(Side note: Ugh, that cover. I know I’m not the target demographic but that’s over the top. The way these guys are described, neither of them works out or does anything that would be necessary to maintain ridiculous chiseled abs like that. Ah well...)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2016This was a great read with cool worldbuilding and such, such hot romance. There is immediate and overwhelming chemistry between Oliver and Connor. Every word and action is a little dance they are doing as Connor, who knows what they are to each other, seduces Oliver. All of Connor's alpha male masculinity and his sensuality make the scenes between them--even ordinary ones--very steamy. Once we get to the sex, it's electric with lots of torrid kisses and tussling and pounding and oh my.... The emotional aspect to the romance isn't lacking either. Oliver is used to one night stands and never putting himself out there in hoping for more, and this makes him try to turn aside all the signs that this is something real. In all honesty, while it was nice seeing how magic was used in the police work and getting a bit of the political landscape of this world, I didn't find the mystery that challenging. I didn't mind however, the book was just so much more than that. Senses are used and invoked a great deal in the book, especially smell, and it adds a great deal to the atmosphere of the book. There were so many original ideas and aspects to this world that I'm glad to see it's the beginning of a series. I look forward to more!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2016There needs to be another book with Oliver and Connor, witch and werewolf, 2 strong characters -- simmering, heating up to a boil then explosive! This murder mystery was beyond anything I hoped for, had to purchase it! Read it twice to make sure I didn't miss a nuance and wanted to sink into this fascinating world of witches, werewolves, and Fae (not in this book, just part of this world) over and over again!
Lyra Evans I want to follow you!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2017I thought this was a really interesting read.
Engaging plot, likable MCs, and chemistry that was seriously off the charts. The whole thing was super hot, and generally fun and engaging. I could easily see this becoming a series.
I will say that I thought the world was a little confusing--it took me awhile to realize that there weren't regular humans at all, and that this wasn't taking place on Earth, or at least not as we know it. Could have used some fleshing out, but it wasn't too hard to follow along.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2021This is well-written, entertaining and original. I loved how Oliver perceived the signatures of people/places; it was a vividly descriptive sensory experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016I was a bit worried about the mystery component, I'm usually in it for fluffy stuff, but I really enjoyed this! Oliver and Connor's relationship is so steamy and thrilling, and the world is just so interesting. Not the usual take on werewolves. Plus the mystery had me turning pages too. It was a great story to sneak in on the weekend! Will definitely be looking for more from this author!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2017Spoilers ahead
I love the world building and the tension. However, starting with a sex scene with some random guy seemed unnecessary and was quite unpleasant. Also, there wasn't much of a mystery about the killer as it was pretty obvious from the start. Other than that, looking forward to the next books.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2016All I can say is, 'Wow!' What a remarkable story. It was exciting and sexy and riveting. The UST between Oliver and Connor is beyond delicious, and when they do resolve it? Wow!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
This story sounded interesting but I don't know this author so I looked them up on Amazon. There's nothing really there so it seems she's quite new( always a worry). I kept coming back to it however so in the end I tried the sample. I'm so glad I did as its excellent . It's very well written with good editing and style. It certainly doesn't read like a book from a new author. The story is good and the tension between Connor and Oliver was captivating. I read it in one sitting and based on this book I will be looking to read anything she writes. Here's to hoping there's more soon

5.0 out of 5 stars Buying book 2 tonight!
To everyone that knows me, I don't read much.
I made this one of my first books to read from Amazon, and I was surprised. It captivated me from start to end so much that I read the whole book in one day! I'm not a mystery fan but the way it plays out in the plot made it very intriguing and I adored the main characters personality. Will be buying book 2 tonight!

3.0 out of 5 stars I did enjoy the world and magic but murder mystery was too ...
2.75-3 stars
It was okay.
I would have been more into the plot if I hadn't read too many books in the genre and this plot was too predictable for me.
I did enjoy the world and magic but murder mystery was too plain. I guessed the murderer right away. Too many plot holes.
Not the worst but not the best either. Not sure I will continue with the series. This one can be read as stand alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like the title says!
Wasn't sure what to expect, but glad I took a chance on this one. We've got a fantasy setting, werewolves, magic, and hot steamy action right from the get-go. But the characters and the world keep you coming back, not to mention the mystery story itself. Can't wait for the next installment!
