Wraithblade (The Wraithblade Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 5,702 ratings

Connor Magnuson is going to conquer Death itself.

A penniless drifter, Connor has survived the last eight years alone in a cursed woodland teeming with monsters that eat grown men whole. Shunned, forgotten, and with nowhere else to go, he looks death in the eye every night and draws his sword to face it. The forest, after all, burned the fear out of him long ago.

Still, it hasn’t hardened the last shreds of his heart quite yet. When Connor hears a mysterious girl scream in the middle of nowhere, he ends up in a brutal battle that nearly costs him his life. His bravery does not go unrewarded, and in the aftermath of the fight, he finds himself bonded to the most infamous enchantment the world has ever seen: the Wraith King. The undead abomination grants him godlike power, but legendary magic always comes with a cost. Even as his fellow outcasts flock to him for help, Connor is branded as an outlaw. Kings and lords alike know where the wraith has gone, and they’ll slit his throat to take it from him. To them, a peasant like Connor is unworthy. He's a mistake to be corrected, and nothing more.

But Connor is no ordinary man, and he’ll drag those hunters to hell with him if that’s what it takes to protect what is his.

One of a kind for the fantasy genre. A breath of fresh air!

One of a kind for the fantasy genre. A breath of fresh air!
I've been reading fantasy since the 80's. Literally thousands of books covering not so well know authors and all the greats. SM Boyce describes in great detail all the surroundings, the magic system, and action packed fight scenes. There is no comparison when it comes to her writing ability. Detail, fluid, emotional, are just a few words that comes to mind with her writing style. I usually don't write reviews but she is so deserving of these compliments that I just couldn't let this slip by. Thanks for the breath of fresh life and air in the fantasy genre.

Breath of fresh air. The writing is good, the characters have depth and logical motivations. The magic is new and unique without being overly gimmicky. This deserves a read from anyone looking for new fantasy books to fill the void. Only thing missing is a decent romance and I think that will be coming in future books.

    Possible spoilers ahead.

I only have two very minor quibbles. First is that the magic system is so far still very vague. Can our MC use potions/augments to even further enhance his strength? He's pretty strong as is, but some ranged attacks would be helpful, plus throwing fire and lightning is always cool. Zander is exponentially stronger than anything else they face in the book. Why? What makes one person's magic stronger than anothers by that much? I know quality of ingredients and skill, but there seems to be more to it that that, hopefully this gets just a bit better explained. That said, the magic system is great, and what is explained is explained very well imo.

Second. I'm not sure how I feel about Zander surviving. I don't usually like when the villain always manages to escape and threats are never actually ended, BUT I'm reserving judgement on this for future books. It could still be done well.

I ship Quinn and Connor, hoping it starts happening next book. Also hoping for a little less constant tension and secrets in the group next book.

Really looking forward to the next one, I'll definitely be getting it!

After reading some of the reviews I almost opted not to read this book. I’m so glad I did. I had read that the fight scenes were too detailed and skipped between characters too much. I typically do not care for long chapters between characters however this book has short chapters that provide important parts of the plot and insights into other pertinent characters in the story. A few fight scenes were very detailed but not enough to take away from the story line which was very interesting. I am looking forward to the next book. I also enjoyed the humor. I like dark and sarcastic humor so found myself laughing often. If you like fighting, magic, humor, and mystery in a good story, I think you would enjoy this book. Happy reading!!!

Very much enjoyed the book, an excellent story with well written characters. All in all very well done but there are certainly some things that need to be addressed. Please, for the love of literature, find a different word than "splintered" to use as a descriptor. I would highly suggest some research into the mechanics of a fight, as it is apparent that while the over-all vision of a conflict is well designed the actual process of fighting (such as a sword swing taking multiple seconds to complete, enough time for an opponent to stand from a prone position) is poorly executed. Lastly, characters sometimes make the most illogical decisions for no apparent reason. No reasoning is ever given as to why this has happened, and the only thing I can surmise is that the author is too strictly following their outline rather than allowing the story to grow and developed naturally. I look forward to a second installment and if some of the flaws can be corrected then it would truly be a work of art.

Nothing I love more than an edge of your seat, heart pounding book. When a book keeps me up at night because I must know what happens next and when I finish the book and immediately research the release of the next book, then that is a book I will always give 5 stars. I love Connor and his small little band of followers and can't wait to see who all he adds to his group. I want the Wraith King to become like Connor and not the other way around and I'm hoping the author feels the same way I do. Connor has a big heart especially when he sees someone in need of his abilities to fight. This could be his undoing at times, but it's the best part of him. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantasy book with strong characters from the heroes to the villains. A book with vivid fight scenes, crazy creatures that go more than just bump in the night, and lots of magic. From the first page to the last, this book had me!

Can I just say this book was EVERYTHING! I wasn’t expecting it to be this good but I gave it a chance because the cover was interesting. We have drifter alone in the forest. He’s running from the federali hood and doing penance by choosing a lonely existence in the forest with monsters. He hears a young girl cry out and has to make a decision. Leave her to whatever fate or go and help. And his decision to not walk away changes his life and the lives of countless others across multiple countries. Because he killed a king to protect a peasant girl and got more than what he bargained for. Watching his journey to survive and retain his humanity is just awesome and I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2021
From a lot of the books I’ve read the past year or two, it seems that necromancy has become vogue for the villain in the story. I, therefore, approached this book rather apprehensively, fearing another necromancy story, fortunately, I found this to be a very original and entertaining read. The story jumps right into an action scene and the majority of the book matches that fast paced action. The most compelling part of the story however, is the well developed characterisation. The background on the characters are revealed gradually, slowly opening the door to the history of the character in a way that just confirms the perception you already have. The author does a great job at providing relatable characters without providing pages of backstory and I found the echos of the protagonist’s father’s advice to be a really nice touch. The book does fall occasionally into predictability a few standard fantasy tropes occurring, but it doesn’t really detract from the story, and if anything, allows for more time to be invested into other smaller characters. My favourite element of the book is the wonderful way the author portrays each character’s motivation, providing a commentary for their actions. There are several moments of excellence between the protagonist and the Wraith, with their constant dichotomy of ideals, one quixotic, the other cynical. It’s great to see the development of the two and their changing relationship through that contrast. Overall the book is well written, handles multiple point of views very well and provides a riveting read that I struggled to put down; I very much look forward to the next iteration in the series.
