Wrecked (The Delicious Series Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 400 ratings

“The best gifts are the ones you didn’t even know you needed.”

“Everyone in the wedding party gets laid. It’s tradition.”

Roger “Beck” Beckworth grew up with a strict, homophobic father who was always changing the rules just to keep Beck on his toes, but now he’s made a well-ordered, predictable life for himself that he’s perfectly happy with.
Perfectly.
When he finds himself waiting to take his place as a groomsman at a friend’s wedding, the last thing he expects is that the final attendant, the one who’s running late—a sure sign that the two of them will be like oil and water—will turn out to be the first man he ever loved.

“Surprises are some of my favorite things.”

Liam Hart lives on his boat, free to go wherever the wind blows him. He’s almost allergic to the idea of being tied down to any one place… or any one person. That had been different, once, but loving Roger Beckworth was half a lifetime ago, and the pain of losing him taught Liam a valuable lesson about the risk of trying to hold onto something after its time has passed.
Finding him again might just teach Liam something else altogether, though.

“You have to believe. Love will never let you down.”

When fate brings them together again, their differences seem destined to pull them apart… unless Beck can finally learn to let go, and Liam figures out that love really is worth holding onto, no matter what the cost.

Wrecked is a gay romance novel of approximately 53,000 words containing someone worth staying for, someone worth leaving for, magical fish, and a once-in-a-lifetime love that comes around twice, because some hearts are simply meant to be together. It can be read as a standalone romance—no cliffhangers and a sweet HEA—but is also the fifth book in The Delicious Series, previously published under one of the author’s many other pseudonyms (with a few tweaks and updates for this Second Edition!).

This is a lovely, somewhat angst-free, series that evolves around a group of young gay and not-so-straight men in Tulsa and Seattle, a series in which each book is preceded by a hint of the next one, and each character is beautifully developed and viable.

In this one, we have Roger Beckham (on the right on the cover), whom everyone calls "Beck," but as we saw in the previous book, only one person besides his detested homophobic father has ever called "Roger." That would be Liam Hart, Roger's teenage lover who has returned to, and been living in, Seattle for a while after he and his wanderlust hippie parents disappeared while the boys were in their teens. But neither Roger nor Liam knows the other really is there because, after 15 years, they've each given up on a chance to renew--for reasons you will discover in this edition.

That Liam has once again left Seattle for a foray to join friends as a tour guide in coastal Mexico gives us a pretext for knowing from the first page that he is the member of his good friend Robbie's wedding party who is still missing 15 minutes before the ceremony. That another groomsman, Beck/Roger has no clue that the missing Liam is his teen-age lover is handled almost tongue-in-cheek. But when Liam shows up on time and sneaks up behind his Roger and says something cheeky, Roger completely melts at the remembered and cherished voice and we are off on a special romance.

The key to this one is the amount of introspection that goes into the development of both characters in alternating chapters which focus on them in the third person. It gets a little redundant at times, and there are several points where a lot of details are left for us to imagine--though they are filled in retrospectively. Still, I finished it in a day or so and left my smile on the page.

I was surprised to see that there is another installment coming up--especially when I noted one of the character names in the title. But then, Sierra Riley has a way of taking surprises like this, grabbing them by the collar, and kissing them all better.

This is, hands-down, the mushiest romance novel I've ever enjoyed. I did ignore the repetitive phrasing, identical regardless of character, disappointing but in this case not a deal-breaker. I've read most of the other books, so I knew most of the other characters.

('Delicious' remains my favorite, and I would recommend it over this one without reservation.)

But I enjoyed Wrecked. I was in a mood for mushy, even if it did end up being an entire boatload. Even though one of the key elements is a complete fiction, and despite the identical phrasing noted above. Liam and Beck ARE distinct, their differences drive the plot. Their love scenes are intensely sweet, side-stepping the graphic in favor of feelings and reactions, and it works.

Finally! Beck's story! I loved this book, and I've been looking forward to knowing more about Roger Beckworth ever since he was introduced as Nick's bff in Falling. I wasn't disappointed! This book was definitely worth the wait, and while it is a stand alone book, I promise that you'll adore the rest of the books in the series. Buy this one now, and then go read them all!

Wrecked was the perfect love story, with a whole lot of sweetness, just the right amount of angst, and some very sexy love scenes. It was so satisfying seeing Beck finally get his happily-ever-after ending, and I can't wait to see what Ms. Riley has in store for the next book!

This was absolutely wonderful! Could not put it down, I keep hoping it would never end, but skipping ahead and praying for a happy ending, (I didn't skip ahead). This was a wonderful love story, with loving friends, who were so like family. It's definitely a must read. The was the best I've read in a good long time. Many Thanks, Honey Bee🐝📚🎶💙

One of my "things" as a reader, is language. Meaning - if you're going to incorporate a foreign that is not your native tongue, do your research and perhaps have someone who does speak / write it fluently help you out. This author didn't quite get it right in this book. As far as the story goes, it felt a bit like the one before with the whole first love coming back. I don't know that I really felt invested in these characters or story to be honest. It just seemed a little bland and boring. To be honest this whole series doesn't quite get to me like her other ones.

I liked their story, how they met and how they met again. These stories are sexy and fun and so much real life. Which is amazing that they are so interesting.

These words describe Liam and Beck respectively. Liam has always looked at life in a laid back way. Not planning his days or his life but "going with the flow", and enjoying whatever and wherever life offered him. Beck needed absolute control in his life. He needed order and plans in everything he did. He was anxious and lost without that sense of control in his life.
Liam and Beck had an opposite outlook on life but a soul deep connection that was lost but found again. Compromise and a true and lasting love was their saving grace.

The ole adage, “if you love something-set it free”. The ideal of your first love being yours forever. Liam and Beck’s story is a romance lovers dream.
I would have liked to have a chapter of Beck telling his father that despite his rules of order. He found his true love again and will never let him go again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great romance and longevity in a relationship
Reviewed in Canada on November 14, 2016
Beautiful story, romance, love lost and found again. Liam and Beck were young boyfriends as teens, then Liam had to move away. Now they meet again at a friend's wedding.

Beck is an interesting character as a physiotherapist who's a bit too organized, seeking control so he can't be left like in the past.

Liam is easy going, and doesn't know how to plan or settle. Or get close and take a chance. As they become reinvolved, they each have to come into the other's world and ways of being.

I love the advice of all the older couples in their lives, Beck's boss, Syd, and Liam's business partner, Francisco, and spouses. My only objection is they're portrayed as elderly people, where by my calculation, they're all in their early fifties, with lots of years to go!

Truly, an excellent book, little drama, lots of sweetness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the oyster scene
Reviewed in Canada on January 27, 2017
    3.8 stars.

First, a disclaimer: I need to confess that this review is quite unfair. I pretty much just read the book a bit at a time (e.g. only twenty minutes or less each time), and not every day either, since I was mainly focused on reading another book. Therefore, I am sure that I would have felt more enthusiastic about Wrecked if I had read in longer sessions, and daily, since I would have given the story more chance to build up emotional momentum in my heart.

Okay, so with that disclaimer in mind, I will now say that I didn’t feel that much for this book than for the other Delicious books. :( (Haven’t read Promise yet, though.) My feelings were more detached and less emotional than the prequels, which made me sad. This could be because I read in erratic little dips instead of lots (i.e. one hour or more) at once, because Wrecked really wasn’t as powerful as the previous books, or both. I think the first possible explanation is the most likely, however.

As for other things, I liked Beck and Liam, both as people and as characters. Their relationship was sweet too, but I was honestly not very excited by it, maybe because there was too little angst and the problems seemed to be too easily resolved. It was great to see characters from the other books make cameos here. I also quite liked Francisco, Berto, and Bandit. Oh my gosh, I loved the oyster scene. Really made my mouth water. (My mouth waters even as I write this.)

On a side note, I think Sierra is good at writing about dogs. :) They’re so cute. Another memorable dog was Val the corgi from Guardian.

A philosophical aside: I find it interesting how the heroes in romances are often opposites in personality, though their moral values or basic beliefs tend to be similar. Yet, the couples work. Nevertheless, it would be fun to read about a couple who are more similar in personality. On the other hand, there is a common trope in male-male romances that one guy would be “masculine/ dom,” and the other would be “feminine/ sub.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that trope, but I’m glad Liam and Beck weren’t that type of couple, in that neither guy was clearly sub or dom.

A personal opinion: I always feel that there are too many sex scenes in romance novels nowadays. Having just one or two in a book might be nice, but five (I didn’t count, but it felt like at least that many) is excessive to me, as the sex scenes all blur together and get really tiresome and boring. Most of the time, I feel that a novel would do so much better with all the sex scenes cut out! Seriously, I often find them so dull and unnecessary that I impatiently skim through them, wanting to get back to the “real story.” :( I felt the same way towards the sex scenes in Wrecked, unfortunately.

Still, I enjoyed reading this book for the most part, and liked the characters.
