Take Pride in Your eBook Formatting!

“If you’re looking for the gold standard on ebook formatting, this is the only guide you’ll ever need.” — NYT, USA Today & WSJ bestselling author Tracey Garvis Graves

This is the revised, second edition!

Step by step, “Zen of eBook Formatting” takes a detailed look at the process that Guido Henkel has used to format close to a thousand eBooks over the past years. Formatter to New York Times bestselling writers and indie authors alike, Henkel makes the process understandable and easy to follow for anyone.
Whether you want to create an eBook for Kindle, or you want to format your manuscript as an ePub file, "Zen of eBook Formatting" is the perfect companion for the task.

“Zen of eBook Formatting” covers the entire process from basic clean-up of the manuscript to basic HTML tagging, all the way to advanced features, and error-checking, teaching you the skills necessary to give your own eBooks the professional polish they deserve.

Here is a look at the Table of Contents, to give you an impression of the breadth of subjects covered in the book.

Table of Contents

  • Preface

  • Introduction

  • 1 - The Road to Right

  • 2 - Data Structure

  • 3 - Cleaning Up the Manuscript

  • 4 - From Word Processor to Programming Editor

  • 5 - General Techniques

  • 6 - Advanced Techniques

  • 7 - eBook Generation

  • 8 - eBooks Outside the Box

  • Parting Thoughts

  • Appendices

Note:
I would like to point out that the “Look Inside” preview is currently garbled and the formatting is off. Amazon is aware of the problem and working on it, hopefully rectifying the error in their previewer as soon as possible. I think it is important o point out that the formatting in the actual eBook is working correctly and does not suffer from the same flaws.

Easy to Follow Instructions for a Perfectly Formatted eBook
Thank you, Guido! Your book was easy to understand and your methods worked perfectly. I was able to format my ebook and load it onto my Kindle from Calibre. That was exciting! My tiered TOC didn't allow for collapse/expand when I created the MOBI file with Calibre, so I went to use KindleGen. That's when I found Kindle Previewer 3. The MOBI file it created fixed the collapse/expand issue and the viewer itself is pretty cool.
Thank you for your feedback

A few months ago, after I finished the first draft of my second novel, I started considering the possibility of joining the ranks of self-published, indie authors. Therefore I decided to educate myself in the matter of indie publishing, which I had previously consciously avoided, primarily due to two concerns:
    - problems involved in e-book formatting;
    - my utter lack of any useful ideas about how to even begin to (non-invasively) promote my own works in any effective way (I have a long but infamously anonymous career as a composer, musician and producer behind me, spanning back more than 20 years with extraordinarily limited success, to prove my hopelessness in this regard).

While the latter problem has, to date, remained unsolvable for me, the former has not.

Now, I happen to know enough about IT and coding to have been seriously worried about how to even approach e-book formatting properly. I knew enough not to trust any automatic conversion processes, and it turned out I was right. However, due to financial constraints (i.e., zero budget) I wanted to tackle this issue myself. The feat would have been impossible without Guido Henkel’s book, which has been, for me, the definite go-to e-book formatting compendium, and it hasn’t let me down once. In about a week of leisurely reading this book and formatting my first novel at the same time I was happy, confident, and... well, done with my first e-book, which has worked perfectly (at least formatting-wise ;))

It's true that I'd had some pre-existing basic knowledge of html, but I'm sure anyone with just a bit of a knack for computerly hijinks can do it as well, possibly more quickly than I can, because I can really take things easy sometimes. It's really important that you edit your text in a dedicated code editor, though. That's a must: don't attempt to edit your book in a general-purpose text editor, because you'll be sorry. And you'll go nuts, or blind, or both. If you don't have something like Dreamweaver and want to try a code editor for free, I'd recommend giving Sublime Text a shot.

Zen of eBook Formatting is very logically structured, clear and to the point, with ample examples and step-by-step instructions. With the aid of Mr. Henkel's expertise I've been able to overcome my fear of formatting my e-books myself... And I can now do so with the conviction that they’ll display well on all sorts of e-readers, phones and tablets. In fact, I now do it – with quite a bit of pleasure, stemming from the simple fact that I've managed to jump over this hurdle without breaking my neck – for a few fellow authors who are just as abysmally bad at self-promotion as I am and hence equally broke. "Zen" addresses practically every issue I have encountered to date, and I've had quite a few unusual ideas myself as well as requests from others (though things like two-column layouts on Kindle are still off limits, even in the new KF8 format – you hear me, Rick, I'm looking at you! If you’re not Rick, feel free to ignore this remark, it's for a fellow writer, if he ever sees it :))

In conclusion of my ode of eternal gratitude to Zen of eBook Formatting let me also point out that, to boot, Mr. Henkel is a very generous and plain old “nice” guy, who will not shy away from any questions you might have, should you run into any insurmountable problems. If it would make sense to buy two of these books, I would. No, wait: if I ever buy an e-book with horrific (non)formatting again and feel like telling the author they should actually format their book rather than export it from Word and publish it, I'll consider buying a copy of Zen of eBook Formatting for them as well – as a useful gift and a meaningful hint.

The author obviously knows what he’s talking about. (Duh. He has formatted thousands of e-books.)
This book gives clear explanations for how to format your ebook in HTML the right way. A perfect companion product is Advanced Kindle Formatting by David Deley.
Zen of eBook Formatting has more reliable advice about creating and uploading your file. This makes sense, because Guido is an e-book designer by trade whereas David Deley is a computer programmer.
(Guido recommends one HTML file, converted with Calibre to MOBI or EPUB formats. In contrast, Advanced HTML directs users to KindleGen, but this is not an option for the latest Mac OS, which requires 64-bit software. Still, Advanced HTML walks readers step-by-step through creating a test book and viewing it online, very helpful.)
For a basic novel, Zen is sufficient.
If you want to do some fancier things like add horizontal lines above and below expanded text for a block quote, Advanced HTML is the book you need. But don’t do anything fancy until you’ve read the Zen book first. Guido will teach you which fancy options are too risky to mess with. (Things that work fine on newer devices may look really awful on the vast majority of ebook readers.)
Guido’s book will help you clarify and simplify the formatting of your e-book. He’ll also help you understand why you can’t convert ebook to print book, and vice versa. Most importantly, he’ll teach you common pitfalls to avoid so that your finished product looks professional.
David’s book will teach you a few HTML tricks that are not included here. For example, Guido uses a shadowed text box to highlight important points. But he doesn’t teach you how to make it yourself.
Another big difference between the books is that Guido does not believe in having a table of contents in the beginning of the book so he doesn’t teach you how to do that. David’s book is the opposite in that he has a table of contents in the beginning of the book but not the easy to navigate table of contents sidebar.
For the best of both worlds, use Guido‘s advice to create an easy-to-navigate TOC sidebar, and David’s advice to include a separate TOC tab on the side bar itself. I haven’t done this yet myself, but noticed it is the structure used by some favorite books of top-selling authors.
Also, I disagree with other reviewers who said Guido’s work is too wordy. This book is written in a conversational style to put the reader at ease and communicate a “you can do this!“ vibe. He’s like your armchair cheerleader, reminding you this is not rocket science and you just need to take it one step at a time. And he basically shares his own workflow as a professional ebook designer with you. Priceless. Thanks, Guido, for empowering so many new authors to do what is otherwise a scary and unfamiliar task. I really appreciate the work that went into this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars I found the answers... Yet I'm disappointed at the way Kindle books works.
Reviewed in Mexico on September 17, 2018
Great work, the book contains a lot of code snippets and they are useful. I really think the book would improve if it contained a link to an example book and I mean the full HTML code of an example book, not a real one.

I wonder if HTML and CSS comments work and don't mess up the eBook? I guess I'll find out by myself. Great work, thanks for writing it.

I confess that I purchased the book just to see how to apply drop caps on the eBook, yet after reading your case about it, I decided to not apply them or at least not now. If I'm not getting it to look just as intended, I don't think it's worth the hassle.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to creating eBooks professionally.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 16, 2014
    This is an excellent book.

I've just had to create a complex non-fiction ebook for Kindle with many lists and images, and I'd started out by trying to do this by using a word processor > Calibre > Kindle Previewer. It kinda worked, but it just wasn't unreliable, and quite unstable across the range of eBook devices. The horrific realisation was that I would have to code the file properly with html and CSS.

Now, I've never coded a book, but I found the author's website which gave a superb outline for the issues involved and a summary of what you need to do. His book is an expansion on this. It explained why my first (lazy) word processor approach had failed, and gave an excellent step-by-step guide on how to do this properly.

Guido leads you through the process with a clear eye for the details. Reading the book, I discovered it isn't very difficult to learn enough code to create the relatively simple html file for EPUB/Kindle. For a novel, it is a fairly quick process. My battles were with the horrendous amount of lists and images in my non-fiction title, but with Guido's book to hand I have managed to build the file... and it works.

So this book is a must if you want consistent results for your eBook conversions.

I did run into a problem and emailed Guido. He was kind enough to answer my question and send me a sample of code for a list within hours. The issue I had (and still have) is that whenever I coded double quotation marks for lists or images, for some reason the code wouldn't work. I expect this is something to do with my Mac setup, but it took me several (frustrating) hours to work this out. Not sure what was going on, but when I copied and pasted the double quotation marks from the file Guido sent, and later the image code from the W 3 School website, it worked (and no - I wasn't using single quotation marks twice!) It is definitely the double quotes that are the problem.

I hasten to say that I don't think this is the author's fault, but if someone else out there has the same issue, that's the fix. As I've never coded anything before, I expect there is a really easy answer to why this wouldn't work.

I bought this particular book as I am about to publish an e-book and needed to find out how to format it correctly.
I had rece ntly read the author's blog and realized that he was a meticulous person who
advocatedthat new authors should take the time to format their books correctly, have a great cover, and have it thoroughly edited before asking anyone to buy the book.
While I wholeheartedly agree with everything stated in the book and blog, I know diddly squat about the intricasies of formatting and all things digital.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed the book in all other areas, and have decided in future I will ask Mr.Henkel to format any other books for me. I would say that the portion about
html etc was a little hard for my non-digital/mathematical brain to wrestle with, the rest of the book was very enlightening. I would place its content as excellent overall, but a little bit confusing for people who are not really digitally cognizant. I believe the author to be meticulous in his own work and one to turn to should you encounter any difficulty in
    any areas of formatting books.

I have been able to obtain the exact look & feel I wanted with his instructions - which are clear, detailed and unambiguous. I most certainly would not have obtained such outstanding results without his help. I am amazed and very grateful.

Reviewed in Spain on August 28, 2015
This book cost me €5. If it had cost me €50, it would still get a five-star review from me. So consider this a fifty-star review.

If you want to publish on Kindle, or any other platform, then formatting is a serious headache. There's a lot of advice on the web that is almost useful but not quite. And there are a lot of complicated solutions and automated work-rounds that don't quite work.

After six months of this, I was not happy.

Mr Henkel is a fundamentalist. An e-book is an html file, so why not treat it as one? He shows a method to do just that. My first book took me twelve hours of trial-and-error, but it got done. It looked fine in all the previewers, and no one has complained yet.

My second book took only four hours.

    Thanks, Guido.
