Twenty-One Arrow Salute: An Order Series Novella Book 2.5 (The Order) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 131 ratings

Verhan Tŭrryés of Black Mountain is a handful.

Freshly enlisted in the Highland Regiment, he does all he can to steer clear of responsibility and commitment. Just not his cup of mead, that. Loose of tongue and even looser of morals, he rarely misses an opportunity to get into trouble—and into the other archers’ knickers, too.

In a unit composed almost entirely of Dark Elves, Hernan Seinnés, with his green eyes and auburn hair, is an outsider. When Verhan, up the creek again, is blackmailed into helping Hernan, he never expects to fall for him. But during the long hours spent training Hernan for the Honour Guard, feelings strike the Highlander right in the heart—and with the force of an arrow.

Unversed in relationships, Verhan finally plucks up enough courage to tell Hernan how he feels, only to drive the Asirhwӱnian away instead. If Verhan can swallow his pride, he might get one last chance to show Hernan what he means to him—and maybe this time he can hit the mark.

Palpable longing
The books in The Order series usually follow the story of archer Ervyn and a half-breed assassin by the name of Lochan. Twenty-One Arrow Salute, however, deviates from their adventures - mostly in love - and centers around Ervyn's cousin Verhan. As a skilled archer himself, Verhan is tasked with instructing Hernan on how to use a bow the latter is unfamiliar with. At first Verhan agrees to do so to save his own skin when a superior officer discovers him doing what he shouldn't be doing (again), but soon their lessons bring the two men from different elven races closer. And thus begin instructions in archery, full of innuendos. While this book is rather tame when it comes to sexual content, it is full of so much longing. When I was reading its two predecessors - The Mutt and The Highlander, the yearning Ervyn felt for Lochan and vice versa was overwhelming, and here we get a craving almost as powerful. Longing is something Kasia writes amazingly well in all of the six books I've read by her so far and it's one of the things I've enjoyed the most in them. If I had to nitpick and point something I wasn't satisfied with in the book, I'd go for two things: one - I would've liked to have had Hernan's POV as well, and two - increase the volume of the naughty content; I've already read When I First Saw Red so I know Kasia can write spicy scenes. I'd recommend Twenty-One Arrow Salute to people who enjoy short fantasy romances. Unlike the other books in The Order series, this one could be read as a standalone (again, it follows a new couple), although it will give you minor spoilers of the two books preceding it.

Ah Verhan. The author’s note describes him as an “adorable moron” and he really is. I love him, messy bundle of chaotic noble and selfish impulses that he is. It’s fun watching him fall in love in spite of himself, and Hernan Seinnés is definitely the perfect person for him to fall for. Their interactions are so beautifully awkward-- until they aren’t, and then they’re beautifully sweet as only first-time falling in love can be. The way the author deftly weaves little snippets from the characters’ lives and upbringings, along with information about their cultural backgrounds, really adds depth to their romance, as well as fleshing out the world they inhabit. My one complaint about this story is that it ends too soon! I so very badly wanted to see what happened after what turned out to be the final scene, at least to see a conversation between the two of them. On one hand, I should be (and am) grateful for the HEA, but on the other...c’mon, how do I not get to see Verhan grovel? Overall, however, a fun, funny, sweet read.

I am loving this Elven world. I'm completely taken with it. Who never walked through a beautiful clearing in the woods and not wondered. This is about the special archers in the Queens Guard. Verhan is set with the task of getting Hernan ready for his special assignment to participate in the Honour Guard Twenty One Arrow Salute. Not knowing it was going to cost Verhan his heart. I absolutely fell in love with this couple. This is a look at a world that only exists in your imagination. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE SHORT READS!!!

    4.5 stars

A delicious novelette, as you might expect from Kasia Bacon. The world created by the author –in which all her published stories are developed to date–, is a fantasy world of the highest quality, it has everything, including actual social criticism that merges into it seamlessly.

Verhan is an adorkable, yet immature prankster, no filter between mind and mouth, but who already shows intrinsical aspects of the grown-up that he will be: expertise, dedication, leadership, loyalty, extroversion and a big, big heart.

Hernan is graceful with flashy hair and stunning eyes; willful and with an arrogance that barely manages to contain an irresistible mixture of passion for life, sense of humor, hunger for affection and desire for belonging.

The secondary characters are also multifaceted in general, although I felt like a loose end the lackness of a short passage at the ending recording the reaction from Hernan 's father to the honor conferred on his son, hence my rating is not 5 stars.

Again and tirelessly I praise the writing style, it' s simply superb with capital S.

I really liked, and felt, for Hernan. He’s a really great character. I absolutely hated Verhan; he’s shallow and immature. Hernan deserved someone better. The story ends before we see a relationship, beyond friendship, develop. I agree with another reviewer that said it would have been nice to at least have seen them dance together.

But cute, all the same. The central conflict reminds me of something that KIDS would do to themselves, with that kind of self sabotage and insecurity. Verhan is a yappy little player with loose morals and even looser trouser strings, but he gets right gobsmacked by love.

Ms. Bacon has outdone herself again... This story IMO is the best of the series thus far. The writinfg is once again top-notch, with her prose just flowing across the page and at times reading like wonderful poetry. Her story is filled with plenty of humor, fun, suspense and one slutty archer finding love for the first time and stuck trying to figure out how it works. Verhan manages to be sweet and adorable on his bumbling, funny and sweet journey to love with Hernan. These two MCs were so beautifully drawn and fleshed out, they were impossible not to root for. I can't wait for the next "The Order" story; this author has such a talent at weaving complex stunning tales and I look forward to many more!

Loved this short! It was such a fun and lovely read, funny & sexy & sweet, with a compelling plot, even a little heart-breaky at one point - really quite a lot of good stuff packed into this relatively small package! The two main characters, and their romance, were just, squeeably adorable & the supporting characters were well drawn & entertaining.

There was also some quite impressive detail related to archery and elven military display, all of which I found super enjoyable to read. The vivid descriptions left me feeling like I'd been there & witnessed those events, especially the exhibition that gives this story it's title. Which, honestly I wish I really could see that because it sounds awesome!

Another strong entry in this series. 🙂

I really enjoyed this side story about Verhan and Hernan. Verhan is something of a man-whore (I guess it would be elf-whore) and generally avoids any responsibility he can. When he is caught peeping in on the showers, he is black-mailed into teaching Hernan how to shoot the asymmetrical dark elves' bow for the twenty-one arrow salute. What starts out as a chore gradually turns to friendship as the two spend time training and learn more about each other. I loved the way Vernan grew and matured through the story and how Hernan started to open up and feel more confident. I could definitely tell Verrhan was Ervyn's cousin. They both have the same tendency to jump to conclusions, assume the worst, and not share their feelings with the one they might be falling for. My only disappointment is where the story ended. I really wanted to see more of Verhan and Hernan after the parade...maybe talking, dancing at the ball, hashing out their misunderstanding. An enjoyable read, but the ending was a bit too sudden.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Soooooo good !

4.0 out of 5 stars Mi favorito de la serie
Reviewed in Mexico on May 1, 2019

I have read all the books in the Order series as well as stand alone ones. I must admit this is my favourite one so far. I just love the sense of humour of the author but in here she outdone herself - it's sharp, wicked and most of all naturally funny. And that's what I love about this book the story is so freely flowing and the characters are real -flesh and bone ( even though it's happening in a Fantasy World ). I just adore them. It is amazing how she can build such a rich world describing feelings and actions so accurate that you feel totally engaged in the Universe of hers. Kasia is the master of a few words but so well written it leaves you satisfied but obviously craving for more of the new adventures of The Order characters.

This was a really enjoyable story carrying in from books 1 and 2. Featuring Verhan, and Hernan who were both mentioned as side characters in the earlier books, this is a really sweet story.
I love the world building- the glossary is really helpful and I look forward to more books in this series
